Pirates
lose in overtime
The Prairie Pirates led most of the way but were caught at the end by St. Maries and lost in overtime 50-53 on the winners’ home floor Saturday, Dec. 1. Prairie scored first in the game on a putback by Damian Forsmann and led 4-1 after a reverse lay-up by Derik Shears. St. Maries tied it with a 3-pointer but a free throw by Owen Anderson and a 3 by Forsmann gave Prairie an 8-4 lead. After a St. Maries basket, Devin Ross closed out the first quarter scoring with a basket at the buzzer for a 10-6 lead. A basket by Taylor Ott and a 3 by Ross put Prairie up 15-6 early in the second quarter. St. Maries responded with a 0-7 run to pull within 2 at 15-13. A pair of free throws by Spencer Schumacher was answered by a basket by St. Maries. Another free throw by Schumacher and a layup by Cole Schlader made it 20-15. In the final seconds of the half, Schumacher had the ball at the top of the key and was battling for an open look before putting up a contested 3-point shot at the buzzer that went through for a 23-15 halftime lead. St. Maries scored first in the third quarter but a free throw by Anderson, another 3 by Ross and a putback by Schumacher gave Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 29-17. The Lumberjacks then started raining in 3 pointers as they had 3 of them in a 2-11 run that got them back within 3 at 31-28. Schumacher closed out the third quarter scoring with a 3-point play for a 34-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter. A basket by Forsmann made it 36-28 early in the fourth but St. Maries again rallied with a 2-11 run that gave them their first lead at 38-39 with 2:30 left to play. Forsmann sank both ends of a bonus at the line to put Prairie back on top but St. Maries answered with a 3-pointer to retake the lead. With 1:33 left to play Shears tied the game with a basket inside. Both teams had their chances in the final minute but turnovers kept each side from scoring as regulation ended with the score tied at 42-42. Schumacher scored another 3-point play to open the overtime. After a free throw by St. Maries, Shears scored to make it 47-43 with 2:13 left in overtime. St. Maries then went on a 0-10 run to take their biggest lead at 47-53 with 10 seconds left. 10 seconds into that run Schumacher fouled out on a questionable foul call. Prairie missed 4 shots during that run. A 3-pointer by Schlader at the buzzer closed the final margin to 3 points. Prairie had 3 players score in double figures led by Schumacher with 14 points. Prairie still led 20-7 at the half. Prairie meanwhile took out varsity swing player Schlader during the quarter. Lane Schumacher had a 3-pointer in the period with Wyatt Ross scoring 2 and Uhlenkott 1. St. Maries set him up for shots several times and he finally scored on one of them at the 1:26 mark. St. Maries then added 5 more points to cut the final margin to 10.
