win 2 league games
The Prairie Pirates picked up a pair of road league wins this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 8, they doubled up Clearwater Valley 63-31 at Kooskia. On Friday, Jan. 11, they gave Potlatch their first league loss, 52-46, at Potlatch. C.V. finally got on the board with a 3-pointer at the 3:01 mark. C.V. added a basket to pull within 3 but Prairie pushed the lead back to 6 by the end of the quarter on a pair of baskets by Spencer Schumacher that made it 12-6. Ross scored 7 and Spencer Schumacher 5 in the second quarter as Prairie extended their lead to as many as 12 points before settling for a 10-point halftime lead at 29-19. Prairie took their first double digit lead of the game on a dunk by Ross at the 6:20 mark of the quarter that made it 17-7. That dunk came after a steal by Sam Mager. 17 seconds earlier Ross had made a 3-pointer as he went from scoring from long distance to scoring from point blank range. In the third quarter Prairie came out of the break with a 15-0 run that put them firmly in control of the game. Damian Forsmann opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer. That was followed by baskets from Dylan Schumacher, Spencer Schumacher, Dylan again and Forsmann. Ross then scored 2 free throws and followed that with a drive to the hoop to make it 44-19. At the 2:26 mark C.V. broke the run with a pair of free throws and then connected on a 3-pointer. Prairie wound up taking a 46-26 lead into the fourth quarter. The Pirates scored the first 7 points of the fourth quarter with Dylan Schumacher scoring 5 of those. C.V. outscored Prairie 2-5 over the next 2 minutes before Prairie closed the game with an 8-0 run. The final 2:58 was played with a running clock after Dylan Schumacher’s tip-in gave Prairie a 61-31 lead. Spencer Schumacher wound up with a double-double as he led the team in both points and rebounds with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Dylan Schumacher also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ross also scored in double figures with 13 points. Forsmann scored 7, Taylor Ott 4 and Mager and Cole Schlader each scored 2. Prairie dominated the boards 44-17. Dylan Schumacher had 4 assists and Ross and Spencer Schumacher each had 2 steals. Prairie was 25 for 54 from the field, 46%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. C.V. was 10 for 39 from the field, 26%, and 9 for 18 at the line, 50%. The JV team lost a tough game in overtime, 53-56. The game started well for Prairie as they took an 8-5 lead and led 13-7 after one quarter as Dean Johnson scored 6 points and Zach Rambo sank a 3-pointer. When Tyler Wemhoff sank a 3 in the second quarter, Prairie had a 20-9 lead with 3:23 left in the half. C.V. then scored 8 straight points to get back into the game. Travis Alfrey broke that run with a 3 but C.V. answered with a 3 to pull within 23-20 at the half. C.V. tied it with a 3 early in the third quarter and took their first lead since 4-5 with another 3 that made it 25-26. The lead changed hands 3 more times until C.V. closed the quarter with a 0-9 run that gave them a 29-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Brody Hasselstrom, Kyle Schwartz and Wemhoff led a fourth quarter rally with 6, 5 and 5 points respectively that saw Prairie take back the lead at 47-46 with 1:33 left to play. C.V. scored a free throw but Hasselstrom answered with a free throw for a 48-47 lead with 50 seconds left. C.V. scored a 3-pointer from the corner for a 48-50 lead with 30 seconds left but Hasselstrom was fouled 6 seconds later and scored both free throws to tie the game at 50-50. That’s where it stood when the buzzer sounded. C.V. took over in overtime by scoring 6 straight points to take a 50-56 lead with 11 seconds left. Lane Schumacher scored Prairie’s only points in the overtime period with 3 seconds left when he sank a 3-pointer to make it 53-56. C.V. was then able to run out the clock. Hasselstrom scored 13 to lead the JV’s in scoring with Wemhoff adding 10. Hayden Uhlenkott scored 8, Schwartz 7, Johnson 6, and Rambo, Schumacher and Alfrey 3 each. Prairie had a 37-33 edge on the boards led by Uhlenkott, who had 9 rebounds. Schwartz had 3 steals and 6 assists. Prairie was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Prairie passed the ball really well all game with 16 assists on their 20 made baskets. Several times there was a pass or two before the one credited for the assist that set up the basket. Ross got the assist on each of Prairie’s first two basket, 1 each by Dylan and Spencer Schumacher. Dylan then made the second of 2 free throws for a 5-0 Prairie lead. Potlatch got on the board with a pair of free throws by Dacota Hadaller but Dylan Schumacher scored on a back cut to the hoop and then scored on an inbounds play for a 9-2 Prairie lead. Two more free throws by Hadaller were answered by a pair from Spencer Schumacher to give Prairie an 11-4 lead after 1 quarter. Potlatch was 0 for 10 shooting in the opening quarter with their only points coming on free throws. Prairie scored the first 5 points of the second quarter to take a 16-4 lead. Dylan Schumacher scored after a steal by Schlader and then Schlader converted a 3-point play. Another free throw by Potlatch was followed by a basket by Dylan Schumacher which followed a steal by Ross. Potlatch finally scored their first basket of the game at the 4:33 mark of the second quarter. Potlatch outscored Prairie 4-8 to close out the half but Prairie still led 22-13. Mager and Forsmann each scored to open the second half and push the lead back to 13 at 26-13. After a Potlatch free throw, Ross scored inside to give Prairie a 28-14 lead, their biggest of the game. Prairie twice more led by 14 points, at 34-20 and 36-22. Potlatch then scored the final 4 points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 36-26 and then scored the first 5 of the fourth quarter to trim the margin down to 36-31. Forsmann scored on a reverse lay-up to break the run and Ross followed with a 3-point play when he was fouled on a tip-in. That pushed the lead back to 10 at 41-31. Potlatch cut the lead down to 6 at 48-42 and again at 50-44, but each time Spencer Schumacher converted a pair of free throws. Potlatch scored just before the buzzer to make the final margin 6 points. Prairie converted 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch to help hold off the Potlatch rally. Spencer Schumacher wound up with 15 points to lead the Pirates with Dylan Schumacher and Ross each scoring 13. Schlader scored 5 with Forsmann adding 4 and Mager 2. Potlatch had the edge on the glass 23-25. Ross had 6 rebounds to lead the Pirates. Schlader had 4 steals while Dylan Schumacher had 3. Ross had 7 assists while Spencer Schumacher had 5 and Mager and Dylan Schumacher had 2 each. Prairie was 20 for 41 from the field, 49%, and 12 for 14 at the line, 86%. Potlatch was 15 for 41 from the field, 37%, and 14 for 22 at the line, 64%. With the wins Prairie is now 9-4 overall and 5-1 in league play while Potlatch is 4-1 in league. The JV team picked up their first win in 2019, 58-26. Prairie scored first when Uhlenkott hit 2 free throws but Potlatch, who had a height advantage at every position with three JV players taller than anyone on their varsity, scored the next 5 points. Johnson hit 2 of 4 free throws and Rambo sank a 3 to put Prairie back on top. After Potlatch tied it at 7-7, Prairie scored 9 straight to end the first quarter with a 16-7 lead. Wemhoff started the run with a basket. Johnson scored another free throw then Rambo hit his second 3-pointer. Hasselstrom sank a free throw and Johnson added 2 more at the line to complete the run. Potlatch got back within 6 at 18-12 in the second quarter then Prairie went on another scoring spree, 10 straight to end the half. 5 different players each scored a basket: Hasselstrom, Wemhoff, Uhlenkott, Schwartz and Wyatt Ross. Prairie led 28-12 at the break. Rambo scored a basket to open the third quarter then Potlatch scored 4 straight points. Prairie answered with a 15-0 run to take full control of the game. Schumacher scored 5 in that run while Johnson scored 4 and Hasselstrom, Schwartz and Rambo had 2 each. Potlatch broke the run at the end of the quarter as Prairie took a 45-18 lead into the fourth. Scoring went back and forth for the first 4 minutes of the quarter with Schumacher scoring a free throw with 4:14 left to make it a 30-point margin and invoke the running clock mercy rule. Potlatch scored the next 2 baskets but Wemhoff answered with a 3 to make it 55-26 with 3:01 left. Neither team scored again until Ross hit a 3 with 43 seconds left to make the final score 58-26. Johnson scored 13 to lead the team and also led in rebounds with 7. Rambo scored 10 while Schumacher had 8. Wemhoff and Ross had 7 each with Hasselstrom scoring 5 and Uhlenkott and Schwartz 4 each. Potlatch had the rebounding edge 29-37. Hasselstrom had 2 steals and 4 assists while Wemhoff had 2 steals and Schumacher had 3 assists. Prairie was 21 for 47 from the field, 45%, and 11 for 21 at the line, 52%. Potlatch was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%.
