Pirates earn State berth
The Prairie Lady Pirates clinched a trip to state for the 9th straight year with a 66-27 thrashing of Troy Friday, Feb. 1 at the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston. Things started slowly for the Pirates as Troy scored first and later with a pair of free throws took a 4-6 lead. Madison Shears took an inbound feed from Jordyn Higgins and sank a 3-pointer that gave Prairie a 7-6 lead. Alexis Hiler scored a free throw and Ciara Chaffee scored inside to make it 10-6. Twice Troy got back within 2 at 10-8 and again at 12-10. Shears scored to make it 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and then scored the first 2 baskets of the second quarter and suddenly Prairie was up 8 points. After Troy scored to pull within 6, Prairie went on a 10-0 run. Kristyna Krogh kicked it off with a pair of free throws then India Peery scored 7 of the next 8 points to make it 28-12. Troy broke the run with a 3-point play but Peery countered that with a 3-point shot. Peery added another 3-pointer, as did Higgins as Prairie took a 43-20 lead at the half. After a cold shooting first quarter, 5 for 17, Prairie hit 10 of 19 in the second quarter while Troy hit just 3 of 11. Peery had scored 18 first half points, 15 in the pivotal second quarter, and Shears added 9. Prairie outscored Troy 17-5 in the third quarter as Higgins heated up for 9 points which included a pair of 3’s. Shears, Krogh, Peery and Chaffee each added 2 points. Prairie had another 10-0 run in the quarter which took a 43-21 lead to a 53-21 lead. Troy scored the first and last points of the quarter and in between Prairie outscored them 17-1. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock with the Pirates holding Troy to just a pair of free throws as they outscored them 6-2. Peery wound up with 20 points in the game with Higgins adding 15 and Shears 10. Krogh scored 6, Theresa Wemhoff 5, Chaffee 4, Hiler 3 and Ellea Uhlenkott 2. Rebounding was even at 32-32. Krogh led Prairie with 8 rebounds while Wemhoff had 6. Peery had 6 steals and Wemhoff 4 as Prairie forced 29 turnovers from the Trojans. Higgins had 7 assists. Prairie was 24 for 52 from the field, 46%, and 12 for 20 at the line, 60%. Troy was 8 for 34 from the field, 24%, and 10 for 14 at the line, 71%. Prairie is now, 18-2 on the season. They will play Lapwai for the District Championship this Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.
