Pirates take second at District
The girls District Championship game between Prairie and Lapwai was a back and forth affair until just past the midway point of the third quarter when things unraveled for the Lady Pirates as they wound up losing 52-69 Friday, Feb. 8 at Lewiston. 
A reverse lay-up by India Peery put Prairie ahead 40-39 with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Prairie wouldn’t score again until the 7:02 mark in the fourth as Lapwai went on a 0-10 run. Prairie was able to get back within 7 with 2:26 to play but then Lapwai scored the final 10 points of the game, all at the free throw line as they hit 10 of 12, to make the final score much more lopsided than the game actually was. The game didn’t start well for Prairie as Lapwai took a 1-10 lead with Madison Shears’ free throw the only point for Prairie. A free throw by Theresa Wemhoff and 2 more by Ciara Chaffee cut the lead to 4-10. Lapwai’s Glory Sobotta converted a 3-point play to push the lead back to 9 but Peery stole the ball and converted her own 3-point play and Wemhoff added a driving lay-up to cut the deficit to 4. A Lapwai free throw was answered by a 3-pointer by Peery to pull the Pirates within 2 at 12-14. After a Lapwai basket Prairie was able to finish the quarter with a 7-0 run. Peery and Shears each scored a free throw. Jordyn Higgins then drove to the basket for a lay-up and Shears finished off the first quarter with a 3-pointer for a 19-16 lead. A basket by Peery made it 21-16 then Lapwai answered with 8 straight points including a pair of 22+ foot 3-pointers by KC Lussoro. A 3 by Shears tied it at 24-24 but Lapwai answered with a 3-pointer to retake the lead. A basket each by Alexis Hiler and Higgins put Prairie back on top 28-27. L:apwai answered with a 3-point play by Grace Sobotta to regain the lead. Higgins and Kristyna Krogh then each scored a free throw to give Prairie a 30-30 tie at halftime. Lapwai opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and after a Peery free throw, a basket to make it a 4-point lead. A 3 by Higgins and a basket each by Shears and Theresa Wemhoff against a Lapwai basket gave Prairie a 38-37 lead. Lapwai scored to retake the lead but Peery answered for a 40-39 Prairie lead. At that point things came unraveled for the Pirates as they couldn’t make shots while it seemed Lapwai couldn’t miss no matter what kind of shot they took as they finished the quarter with a 0-9 run to take a 40-48 lead into the fourth quarter. Lapwai added a free throw to start the fourth before Prairie finally got back on the scoreboard when Krogh converted on an inbounds play. Lapwai answered with another 0-6 run before Wemhoff hit a free throw. Prairie managed to get back within 7 with 2:28 left at 52-59 but that would be their final point as Lapwai ended the game with 10 straight points at the line. Peery wound up leading the Pirates in scoring with 17 points while Shears and Wemhoff each scored 10. Higgins scored 8 with Krogh scoring 3 and Hiler and Chaffee 2 each. Glory Sobotta led Lapwai with 17 points while Omari Mitchell had a perfect game hitting 6 for 6 from the field and 4 for 4 from the line for 16 points. Prairie had a 35-31 edge on the boards with Peery and Chaffee pulling down 8 rebounds each. Higgins, Peery and Shears each had 3 steals while Peery had 4 assists and Higgins had 3. Prairie was 17 for 50 from the field, 34%, and 13 for 29 at the line, 45%. Lapwai was 23 for 45 from the field, 51%, and 17 for 23 at the line, 74%. Prairie takes an 18-3 record into the state tournament where they will open against District 3 champion Notus at 3 p.m. MST (2 p.m. our time).
