Pirates
stay alive at District
The Prairie boys basketball team struggled on offense against Potlatch in their District opener and lost 33-38 Thursday, Feb. 14 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston. They bounced back Monday, Feb. 18 with a 67-32 win over Genesee at Cottonwood to start the long trek to a possible state berth. Ironically that last trip to State for Potlatch came by way of beating Prairie in an elimination game at District. Potlatch led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 17-12 at the half. It was 25-19 after 3 quarters. Prairie trailed by as many as 9 points in the fourth but rallied to cut the deficit to just 2 at 28-30 with 2:30 left but apparently ran out of steam at that point as Potlatch made their free throws plus a couple of big baskets to outscore the Pirates 5-8 over the final minutes. Devin Ross was Prairie’s leading scorer with 11 points with Spencer Schumacher scoring 9, Cole Schlader 7 and Dylan Schumacher 6. Potlatch was led by Dacota Hadaller with 13 and Connor Akins with 12. Prairie hit just 28% of their shots in the game. Prairie 6 6 7 14 -33 Potlatch 9 8 8 13 -38 Prairie-D. Ross got things going for the Pirates with a 3 point play at the 6:54 mark and Dylan Schumacher tied it with a drive to the hoop 12 seconds later. A steal by Sam Mager led to the go-ahead basket by Ross and then Mager scored a lay-up to make it 9-5. Genesee got back within 1 at 10-9 but Prairie ended the first quarter with a 6-0 run. Schlader scored from 15 feet then stole the inbounds pass which led to a basket by Ross. Mager closed out the first quarter with a lay-up to make it 16-9. Ross scored to open the second quarter to put Prairie up 9 but Genesee answered with a 3-pointer at the 5:50 mark. There was no scoring by either side for almost 3 minutes as Prairie struggled with their shooting and Genesee kept turning the ball over. Mager finally broke through with a lay-up at the 3:04 mark and that kicked off a 13-0 run for the Pirates. Spencer Schumacher followed with a basket. Damian Forsmann hit a 3. Spencer scored a free throw and Forsmann made a pair at the line. Spencer Schumacher then hit the second of 2 free throws twice for a 31-12 lead. Genesee’s Jeffery Waisanen sank an off-balance 3 pointer at the buzzer to make it 31-15 at the half. Genesee scored to open the second half then Prairie put together a 12-2 run to push the lead to 24 points. Genesee scored 5 straight then Prairie closed out the third quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 53-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Tayler Ott scored 5 of those 10 points. A 3 by Genesee delayed the inevitable as a basket each by Schlader and Derik Shears invoked the running clock mercy rule with 6:47 left as that made it 57-27. Prairie then scored the next 7 straight points with 5 of those coming at the line to make it 64-27 with 2:36 to play. All the JV call-ups got into the game in the final 4 minutes with Dean Johnson scoring his first varsity points at the free throw line and Zach Rambo getting his on a buzzer-beating 3 pointer. Ross led the scoring with 17 points with Schlader scoring 9. Spencer Schumacher scored 8, Forsmann 7, Mager and Ott 6 each, Dylan Schumacher 5, Shears 4, Rambo 3 and Johnson 2. Prairie had a 27-20 advantage on the board with Ross and Spencer Schumacher each pulling down 6. Forsmann and Dylan Schumacher each had 3 steals while Ross and Mager had 2 each.
