The Prairie Pirates completed their run of having to win 4 games in 6 days to qualify for the State Tournament. After beating Genesee at Cottonwood on Monday (see last week’s Chronicle) they knocked off Troy 76-49 at the LCSC Activity Center on Tuesday, Feb. 19. On Thursday, Feb. 21 they traveled to Post Falls and held on for a 58-50 win over Wallace. Finally, on Saturday, Feb. 23, they traveled to McCall where they defeated Oakley 54-34 to earn a state tournament berth. That’s 4 different opponents at 4 different locations within 6 days. They will open State Tournament play against Challis at 6:15 p.m. MST Thursday, Feb. 28 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell. This is Prairie’s 6th straight appearance and 9th in 11 years. after ending a 27 year drought. Prairie scored the first 4 points of the game on a basket each by Spencer Schumacher and Dylan Schumacher and never trailed. After Troy got on the scoreboard, Damian Forsmann and Devin Ross each scored to make it 8-2. After another Troy basket Forsmann scored a putback and then twice from 3-point range as Prairie too a 16-7 lead. Cole Schlader added a 3 and Spencer Schumacher scored inside as Prairie took a 21-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. Troy outscored Prairie 1-8 to open the second quarter and climb back within 2 at 22-20. Prairie answered by finishing the half with a 20-5 run. Spencer Schumacher scored 9 of those including 3 free throws while Forsmann hit another 3 and added a basket as he scored 15 first half points of 6 for 7 shooting, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range. Prairie led 42-25 at the half. A basket each by Spencer Schumacher and Forsmann to open the second half made it a 46-25 lead. Prairie outscored Troy 13-8 over the next 4 minutes for a 59-33 lead. Troy closed the third quarter with 3 free throws to cut the lead to 59-36. In the fourth Prairie got right on the cusp of invoking the running clock mercy rule as they outscored Troy 9-3 to take a 68-39 lead with 4:42 left. Troy then outscored the Pirates 3-10 over the next 3 minutes to get within 71-49 but that was their final total while the Pirates added a basket by Owen Anderson and 3 free throws from Tayler Ott to make the final margin 27. Spencer Schumacher had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Forsmann scored 18, Dylan Schumacher 10, Ross and Ott 9 each, Schlader 5 and Anderson and Sam Mager 2 each. Prairie had a 30-28 edge on the boards. Dylan Schumacher and Schlader each had 2 steals whileMager had 6 assists and Forsmann, Ross and Dylan Schumacher had 4 each. Prairie had 22 assists and 29 made baskets. The Pirates were 29 for 53 from the field, 55%, and 11 for 15 at the line, 73%. Troy was 19 for 49 from the field, 39%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%. Wallace scored the first 4 points of the game but Prairie answered with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Spencer Schumacher started it with a lay-up. Ross followed with a steal and drive to the hoop. Forsmann scored a reverse lay-up to make it 6-4. Two steals by Dylan Schumacher then led to a 3-point play by Forsmann who scored after the second steal on a drive to the hoop. A basket each by Dylan and Spencer Schumacher gave Prairie a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Another basket by Dylan made it 17-6 in the second before Wallace answered with a 3-point play. Dylan scored again to kick off a 9-0 run that made it 26-9 for a 17-point lead. After a Wallace basket on a drive by Zack Welch, Ross scored to again give Prairie a 17-point lead at 28-11. Wallace was able to outscore Prairie 3-7 the rest of the half to cut the deficit to 13 at the break, 31-18. A 3 by Schlader accounted for Prairie’s points in that run. A basket by Mager and a 3 by Spencer Schumacher to start the third quarter gave Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 36-18. Welch scored but Ross answered with a free throw. Wallace then scored consecutive 3-pointers, their first of the game to get within 11. Spencer Schumacher scored a pair of baskets that allowed Prairie to take a 41-29 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Wallace came out in a full-court press and Prairie started playing like they’d never seen one before. Several turnovers and a pair of missed free throws by the Pirates led to 9 straight points by Wallace to open the fourth quarter as they cut the lead to just 3 points at 41-38 with 6:12 yet to play. A steal by Spencer Schumacher led to a basket by Dylan Schumacher that broke the run. Ross then collected a defensive rebound and was fouled, making both free throws to push the lead back to 7. Wallace’s Tristan Neubauer made a pair of 3’s that were answered by a basket by Spencer Schumacher as Wallace again pulled within 3 at 47-44. Dylan Schumacher was pretty much intentionally fouled as he was 0 for 4 at the line to that point. He made both ends of the 1 and 1 then came up with a basket inside on a feed from Forsmann. Schlader made the second of two free throws to push the lead back to 8 at 52-44 with 1:35 left. Welch sank a long 3-pointer but Schlader answered with 2 free throws. Hunter Stutzke made a 3 for Wallace with 44 seconds left to cut the lead to 4 at 54-50, but that would be Wallace’s final points. Forsmann and Spencer Schumacher each sank 2 free throws to give Prairie an 8-point win. Prairie’s struggles at the free throw line had allowed Wallace to make it close as they started 5 for 14 at the line. However the Pirates hit their free throws when it counted as they made 9 of their last 12. Spencer Schumacher led the scoring with 17 points and made it a double-double with 15 rebounds. Schlader scored 13 with Dylan Schumacher scoring 10. Forsmann scored 9, Ross 7 and Mager 2. Welch scored 23 to lead Wallace with Neubauer adding 11. Prairie had a 34-32 edge on the boards. Ross also hit double figures in rebounds with 11. Dylan Schumacher had 4 steals while Ross had 3. Dylan and Spencer Schumacher each had 4 assists while Ross had 3. Prairie was 21 for 44 from the field, 48%, and 14 for 26 at the line, 54%. Wallace was 15 for 50 from the field, 30%, and 14 for 18 at the line, 78%. Oakley jumped out to a 2-5 lead in the game after a 3-pointer by point guard Chandler Jones. Prairie then started running their offense to perfection as Spencer Schumacher and Mager each got behind the defense for an open lay-up. Spencer Schumacher then drove in for a lay-up to make it 8-5 and followed that with a lay-up that he converted into a 3-point play. He scored 9 of Prairie’s 11 first quarter points then picked up his second foul Oakley converted a 3-point play to close the margin to 11-8 at the end of the quarter. Ross hit an open 3 to start the second quarter and Spencer Schumacher followed with a basket for a 16-8 lead. Oakley cut the lead to 4 but Ross hit another 3 and Schlader followed with a basket to make it 21-12. After an Oakley scored, Schlader hit a 3. A steal by Spencer Schumacher led to a basket by Forsmann. Schlader and Mager each made a free throw to give Prairie a 28-14 lead. Oakley’s Jake Pulsipher hit a 3 at the buzzer to make it 28-17 at the half. Ross and Spencer Schumacher each scored to make it 32-17 in the third. After an Oakley basket, Ross made his third 3 of the game for a 35-19 lead. After another Oakley basket, Spencer Schumacher hit 1 free throw and Ross made 2 for a 38-21 lead. Ross then answered another Oakley basket with one of his own to give Prairie a 40-25 lead after 3 quarters. In the fourth quarter Prairie was content to run their offense for a lay-up and shoot free throws while Oakley hoisted 3-pointers to try and get back in the game. Prairie made 3 of their 5 fourth quarter shot attempts and hit 8 of 12 at the line while Oakley hit just 3 of 13 shots with only one made 3-pointer. That allowed the Pirates to pull away for a 20-point win. Ross wound up with 21 points to lead the scoring and added 10 rebounds. 15 of his points came in the second half and included a 6 for 6 performance at the line. Spencer Schumacher scored 18, 11 in the first half. Schlader scored 6 with Mager scoring 5 and Forsmann 4. Oakley was led by athletic 6’5” post Gannon Critchfield with 15 points. Prairie had a 35-19 advantage on the boards. Forsmann added 9 rebounds. Mager and Ross had 2 steals each while Ross and Spencer Schumacher each had 4 assists. Prairie was 18 for 32 from the field, 56%, and 14 for 24 at the line, 58%. Oakley was 14 for 52 from the field, 27%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%. The Pirates take a 20-6 record into the State Tournament where they will open against Challis at 5:15 PST Thursday, Feb. 28 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
