HOSA students compete at state
Throughout the year, 22 Prairie High Schools students participated in an extracurricular group called HOSA or Health Occupations Students of America, which is part of our nation’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program. Students are required to pick both knowledge tests ranging from human growth and development to pathophysiology, and leadership or community events to participate in. They were then required to either study those topics or create a presentation for our State Leadership Conference in Boise. This year, our students did an amazing job creating two community-based projects that qualified in the top five at this year’s conference. In addition, nine of our students qualified for the National Leadership Conferences in knowledge based assessments in both Human Growth and Development as well as in Health Care Issues. Ciara Chaffee, Brooklyn Riener and Oliva Klapprich formed a group to inspire 6th grade students at Prairie Elementary to become more active and lead a healthier lifestyle in their Health Education Group. The three fundraised throughout the community to purchase the materials needed for the project, including 36 pedometers one for each student. They went down the elementary school and gave a presentation about healthy food choices and leading an active lifestyle. In addition, they challenged the students to a one week step program: who ever could get the most steps in a week would win the Kindle Fire. With 150,000 steps, Clarise Rehder won the grand prize, but more importantly, the 6th grade teachers, Kim Schumacher and Colleen Sonnen, both expressed the students’ desire to be more healthy and active during that time. India Peery, Hope Schwartz, Ali Rehder and Delaine Lockett participated in a Community Awareness event by fundraising money at our local basketball games to create “smile bags” for children at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise. The girls were able to purchase backpacks, chapter books, coloring books, and games for children in the hospital to help entertain them while they were receiving treatment. In addition, Halle Klapprich placed 3rd at State for her Clinical Specialty Project. Halle shadowed local doctors and nurse practitioners to gain a better sense of the job requirements in that career. Halle currently strives to become a surgeon, and this opportunity gave her the ability to see the clinical side of her potential specialty.
