Spring Show winners are named
Following are the winners of the Central Idaho Art Association (CIAA) Spring Show held recently at Grangeville. Featured Artist was Blanche Rockwell, a Grangeville artist, art instructor, and mentor of many young artists. Mrs. Rockwell so adequately represented CIAA with her landscapes, pen/pencil art, and quilt art (of her house.) A soiree was held on Friday night with live music from Rick Weholt and Gordon Talley. Best of Show was awarded to Jackie Zumalt for her exquisite watercolor, “Classic Rose” Jackie’s adequate glazing and combination of varying tones created a translucent, almost photographic piece of a delicate rose. Judging the show was Melanie Fales, Interim Executive Director and Curator of Education for the Boise Art Musem.. Ms. Fales (a former art student of Mrs. Rockwell) graduated from Grangeville High School and studied at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. She later attended and graduated from Boise State University summa cum laude with a Master of Arts degree focusing on museum education. Ms. Fales provided critique on each announced winners, and later provided encouragement and advice for those who asked to have their pieces critiqued. Always a highlight of the CIAA Spring Show, guided tours were provided for twenty classes from Grangeville schools. Each student chose three of their favorite pieces which were later tabulated. David Martin received Kids’ Choice for his brilliant colored fall photo, “Everywhere Magic.” Adults also chose three of their favorites for Peoples’ Choice. Carrie Jo Rehfeld received Peoples’ Choice for her eye-striking oil rendition of “Snoqualimie River.” Susie Barnett won 1st place in watercolor for her “family (pet) portrait” “Birdie.” Susie’s brush strokes enhanced strong definitions of detailed hair, convincing eyes, and care in not over-portraying the mouth. 1st place in oil was awarded to Carrie Jo Rehfeld for her well-balanced, nostalgic portrayal of the “Snoqualmie River”. Her appealing choice of intense green and depiction of light made the water particularly strong and eye-catching. 1st place in acrylic was given to Leah Harvey, for “A Chilly Day in January.” Leah’s brush strokes and choice of darks and lights depicted energy and movement of a snowy day. The viewer was drawn into the composition by a snow laden fence protecting black, almost abstract, horses. 1st Place in photography went to David Martin for “Thor’s Revenge.” His choice of a black and white photo created a range of values enhancing strong varied movements of a crashing wave and wild water. 1st place in mixed-media went to Gordon Talley, for “The Print Shop.” His monochromatic chose of grays, varied textures and shapes, range of brush-strokes and multi-media developed an intriguing abstract painting. Honorable Mention was presented to Jon Mullis, for “Cold Camp,” a very strong, stylistic illustration.
