26 turn out for Football
There are 26 players turned out for football this year at Prairie High School.
There are 7 seniors, 7 juniors, 6 sophomores and 6 freshmen.
Seniors are Derik Shears, Sam Mager, Owen Anderson, Hayden Uhlenkott, Reid Uptmor, Carson Forsman and Damian Forsmann. Forsmann will be out most, if not all, of the season with an injury.
Juniors are Dalton Ross, John Gehring, Cole Schlader, Dean Johnson, Cole Martin, Matt Coppernoll and Hunter Leal.
Sophomores are Tayden (T.J.) Hibbard, Lane Schumacher, Zach Rambo, Brody Hasselstrom, Jesse Cronan and Wes Tucker-Hall.
Freshmen are Shane Hanson, Colton McElroy, Quirt Goeckner, Brandon Kindrick, Keenan Shears and Ryan Wemhoff.
Schlader be the starting quarterback with Martin, Anderson and Hasselstrom expected to be the primary running backs. Derik Shears and Mager will likely be the top receivers with that position hurt by the injury to Forsmann. Shears may also get some time at running back.
Clearwater Valley looks like it will be a top contender for the league title with Prairie and probably Potlatch in the mix. Lapwai lost a lot off of last year’s team but could still be competitive. Troy, Genesee and Kamiah are all looking to come back off of tough seasons last year. Wallace dropped out of the league this year after a winless campaign last season.
Ryan Hasselstrom returns as head coach with Tell Bruner and Matt Elven as assistants.
Prairie will be looking to make the state playoff for a 7th consecutive season and for the 10th time in the past 12 seasons.
The Pirates open their season against another perennial state contender, Raft River, Saturday, Sept. 7 at Middleton High School. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. MDT (1 p.m. PDT).
Their first home game will also be Homecoming on Sept. 20 against Salmon River.

Prairie players take part in a one on one blocking drill at practice last Thursday.

The Pirates execute a running play during practice.

Another running play.

Cole Schlader rolls out on a pass play during practice. He has some big shoes to fill as he follows 4-year starter Spencer Schumacher at the quarterback position.

Cole Schlader runs a bootleg fake to the left after handing off on a running play.

The Prairie Jr. High team with coaches Travis Mader and Nick Brotzman was practicing at the same time as the high school team.
