Choir to perform Sunday
The Gonzaga University Concert Choir, conducted by Timothy Westerhaus, will perform at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on Sunday, September 8, at 1:30 p.m. The group will also provide music for 10:30 Mass that morning. This choir performs at the Monastery every September to conclude their annual retreat at Spirit Center. The chorus is a select, mixed ensemble of 60 voices and the performance will include a wide variety of repertoire from the Medieval to Modern historical periods and from diverse cultures. The Choir seeks to deliver passionate, imaginative performances that move audiences, spark the imagination, and create a sense of awe and wonder. Committed to bridging cultures, the Concert Choir advocates for choral arts in schools through festivals and outreach concerts. It tours throughout the Pacific Northwest, and its subset Chamber Chorus has toured to China, Austria, Germany, Colombia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Timothy Westerhaus has conducted a variety of collegiate and professional ensembles in the United States and Europe; his teaching activities span from universities to national music organizations. “The Monastery of St. Gertrude graciously opens its doors each autumn to more than 60 students of Gonzaga University’s Concert Choir,” he writes. “Over the course of three days, our spirits are refreshed by the beauty of the grounds, our music finds new heights of inspiration in the beautiful chapel acoustic, and the hospitality of the sisters surrounds us with kindness and warmth. What our students and I have found at St. Gertrude’s is that this setting helps us be more present to those around us, more present to beauty of sight and sound, and more present to the inner voice of love.” The performance is free and takes place in the chapel at 1:30 p.m. The Choir will also provide music for 10:30 a.m. Mass. All are welcome and a reception will follow. For more information, call 208-962-5065.
