Pirates lose twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates volleyball team had a tough start to the season as they lost a pair of matches on the road last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 3 they traveled to Potlatch where they lost a league match 22-25, 25-23, 15-25, 20-25. On Thursday, Sept. 5, they traveled to Grangeville and lost a non-league match 22-25, 11-25, 25-15, 25-22, 11-15. 
This time Potlatch was able to pull out the win for the first time in many years against Prairie. In the opening game Prairie fell behind 0-2 then got a back row kill from Sierra McWilliams. Hope Schwartz then served Prairie into the lead with 3 aces. Prairie was able to hold the lead until Potlatch got a big serving run after trailing 10-6. Potlatch took a 10-13 lead before Prairie called timeout and then got a kill by Schwartz. Prairie scored 2 to get within 1 then dropped back to 3 behind at 12-15. Halle Klapprich scored a kill and McWilliams followed with a pair of service aces and Schwartz added a kill as Prairie took back the lead at 16-15. Unfortunately Potlatch scored the next two points and Prairie never led again although they were able to tie the score at 19, 20 and 21. Potlatch eventually won by 3, 22-25. Prairie trailed 2-3 in the second game when Schwartz scored a kill to send Erin Chmelik to the service line. Chmelik served an ace and Ellea Uhlenkott and Madison Shears each added a kill for a 6-3 lead. Prairie held onto the lead for most of the rest of the game, though never by more than 4 points. Potlatch tied it at 21 before serving into the net. A kill by Uhlenkott and an ace by Schwartz got Prairie to game point at 24-21. Potlatch held off game point twice before a service dig by McWilliams found floor on Potlatch’s side for the game winner. Beating Potlatch must have ticked them off because they came out in the third game and took leads of 0-7, 1-9 and 2-11. From then on they were able to rally back within 6 at 7-13 then fall back by 10 at 9-19. After 3 aces by McWilliams and a kill by Ashton Landers they were able to get within 5 at 14-19 but that was as close as they would get as they eventually lost by 10, 15-25. The fourth game saw Prairie took an early 4-2 lead but then Potlatch scored 4 straight and never trailed again. The Loggers took a 7-15 lead but Prairie was able to rally back within 1. A block by Uhlenkott and 2 aces by Schwartz cut the deficit to 4. After a sideout, a kill by Uhlenkott, an ace by Chmelik and 2 kills by Shears got Prairie within 1 at 15-16. A bad serve kept them from tying the score and Potlatch built the lead back to 7 at 16-23 before winning the game and the match by 5, 20-25. Shears and Schwartz each had 13 kills to lead the team. Schwartz added 17 assists and 7 aces while Shears had 2 aces. Uhlenkott had 9 kills including 2 blocks with 2 assists and 4 aces. Trinity Martinez had 5 kills including a block. Landers had 4 kills and 19 assists. McWilliams had 3 kills, 2 assists and 5 aces. Chmelik had 2 kills and 5 aces. Klapprich had 2 kills. Brooklyn Riener had 1 kill and 1 assist. The JV team didn’t fare much better as they lost 16-25, 25-14, 11-15. Prairie fell behind 2-8, 3-14 and 4-17 in the opening game before getting anything going. They outscored Potlatch 12-8 the rest of the way but had dug themselves too deep of a hole. Jade Prigge, Delanie Lockett and Josie Remacle each had short serving runs to help rally the team. In game 2 Prairie turned things around as Tara Schlader served Prairie to a 4-1 lead with an ace and a kill each by Kristin Wemhoff and Laney Forsmann. Potlatch came back to tie the game at 9-9 and again at 10-10. A kill by Lockett put Schlader back on the service line and Forsmann scored a kill to make it 12-10. After a sideout, Lockett scored another kill and then served an ace for a 14-11 lead. With the score at 15-13 Forsmann scored a back row kill to send Olivia Klapprich to the service line. A net foul by Potlatch, 2 aces by Klapprich and a kill be Prigge put Prairie up 20-13. After a sideout, Klapprich scored a second touch kill to send Prigge to the service line. Remacle scored a kill then Prigge served up 3 aces to give Prairie a 25-14 win to even the match. In the deciding third game Prairie led just twice, at 1-0 and 6-5. Klapprich had served 2 aces to give them that 6-5 lead but Potlatch got the sideout and 3 more points to take a 6-9 lead. Prairie fought back to a 10-10 tie but a bad serve scored the sideout and Potlatch gave up just 1 more point as they won the match. The C team lost their first two games before salvaging the third game, 13-25, 12-25, 15-13. In 
the opening game Prairie took their first lead when Landers served 4 straight
points to turn a 7-9 deficit into an 11-9 lead. She had an ace with Chmelik
adding 2 kills. Landers scored a kill on a second touch tip.
Grangeville then scored the sideout and gave Prairie a preview of things to come later as Ally Williams jump-served her way to 4 straight points and an 11-14 Grangeville lead. Prairie was able to tie it twice at 17 and again at 22 but could never regain the lead. Landers served 3 straight aces to tie it at 22 before Grangeville’s powerful middle, JaKaili Norman pounded home a spike for the sideout. Another kill by Norman and a jump-serve ace by Williams gave Grangeville the win. Williams started the second game on the service line and 4 jump serve aces and 3 kills by Norman later, Grangeville was up 0-7. Landers scored the kill to put Prairie on the board but Norman scored on a block and the Bulldogs then scored another 6 points with Macy Smith serving for a 1-14 advantage. Prairie played better the rest of the way but Grangeville still won easily, 11-25. Prairie turned things around in the third game as Uhlenkott won a joust at the net to open the scoring. After a pair of sideouts, Chmelik served 3 straight aces for a 5-1 lead. Smith answered back with a 4-point run as Grangeville to a 5-6 lead. Prairie tied it on a kill by Shears and Uhlenkott served up an ace for the lead. She served 4 more points with Martinez collecting 2 kills and Shears and Chmelik 1 each for an 11-7 lead. After trading sideouts, Shears served an ace and Riener added 2 kills for a 15-7 lead. Grangeville never got closer than 6 as Prairie went on to win by 10 and get back into the match. In the fourth game Prairie fell behind 1-5 but came back to tie at 7-7 after 2 aces by Uhlenkott. They took their first lead of the game after 2 aces by Shears made it 11-9. Grangeville briefly took back the lead but Prairie took it right back and built a 19-13 lead after an ace by McWilliams and a kill each by Chmelik and Uhlenkott. Grangeville then scored the sideout and Williams went to the service line. She served 8 straight points to give Grangeville a 19-22 lead before Uhlenkott blocked a spike by Norman for the sideout. Landers then served out the game to tie up the match at 2 games each. She had 2 aces while Shears scored on a tip and Uhlenkott had a pair of kills including the game-winner. In the deciding fifth game, Prairie got a break when Williams foot-faulted on the opening serve but gave it right back by missing a serve. Smith served Grangeville to a 1-5 lead and Grangeville never trailed the rest of the way. Prairie twice got within 2 points, at 5-7 and 11-13, but Grangeville answered each time. Shears, Martinez and Chmelik each had 8 kills in the game with Shears adding 17 assists and 4 aces as coach Julie Schumacher mixed things up from the first match by moving Shears to a setter position. Chmelik added 3 assists and 7 aces. Uhlenkott had 7 kills, including a block, plus 5 aces. Schwartz had 4 kills and 3 assists. Riener had 4 kills and 2 aces. McWilliams had 4 kills, 1 assists and 2 aces. Landers had 3 kills, 16 assists and 6 aces. Klapprich had a block and an ace. Anna Kaschmitter had 1 kill. Prairie is now 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play. The JV team was able to win their first match of the season as they swept Grangeville 25-11, 25-13, 15-7. The first game started out 4-4 with a net serve by Grangeville giving Prairie a 5-4 lead. Olivia Klapprich then served 2 aces and Wemhoff added a kill for an 8-4 lead. Mackenzie Key served 2 aces and Lockett added a kill to make it 13-7. After a pair of sideouts Prigge served Prairie to a 19-8 lead with 2 aces plus a kill and a block by Forsmann. Lockett served up 3 aces in a row to close out the game. In the second game an ace each by Wemhoff and Remacle and 2 by Lockett helped Prairie take an 8-3 lead. After a trade of bad serves, Klapprich served up 6 straight points for a 15-4 lead. She had 4 aces and Schlader and Prigge each added a kill. Prairie held the lead at around 10 points until Remacle served 3 straight aces to make it 24-12. After a sideout Schlader scored the game and match-winning kill. In the anti-climactic third game Wemhoff served Prairie to a 4-0 lead with 2 aces plus 2 kills by Lockett. Grangeville came back though to take a 5-6 lead. Schlader scored a sideout kill to tie it and Klapprich served an ace to put Prairie ahead. A kill by Remacle made it 8-6. After trading sideouts, Schlader served out the match. Remacle had 3 kills with Key adding a kill. Schlader served an ace for game point and Grangeville was called for a net foul to end it. The C team also picked up their first win, 21-25, 25-15, 17-15.
