Lady
Pirates lose two league matches
The Prairie Lady Pirates continued their early season struggles as they fell to 0-4 on the season with a pair of league losses last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, they lost their home opener to C.V. in 5 games, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 17-25, 11-15, and on Thursday, Sept. 12 they traveled to Troy where they lost in 3 games, 9-25, 6-25, 14-25. C.V. came right back with 5 straight points to set the tone for the match. A bricked serve ended their run and Halle Klapprich served Prairie to an 8-5 lead. She had 2 aces and Uhlenkott added a kill. C.V. came back through and took the lead at 9-10 and again at 10-11 and then held the lead until prairie tied it at 19-19 on a kill by Madison Shears. Prairie took a brief lead at 22-21 on an ace by Erin Chmelik but C.V. then won a joust at the net and scored the next 3 points to win the game. C.V. then jumped out to a 0-4 lead in the second game. Prairie got back within 4-5 on an ace by Uhlenkott but couldn’t tie it, much less take the lead. C.V. led by as many as 5 at 11-16. A couple of aces by Shears cut the lead to 14-16 and after trading sideouts Chmelik went to the service line. Chmelik has a strong serve but doesn’t always get it to land in play. This time though she was on a roll and served Prairie into a 23-17 lead. She had 5 aces while Hope Schwartz scored a pair of kills and Trinity Martinez added another. Chmelik’s last ace ticked the net and dropped over and her next serve unfortunately was lower yet, ending her run. C.V. cut the lead to 23-19 before Martinez scored on a tip. With McWilliams serving, Brooklyn Riener scored the game-winning kill to even the match at 1 game each. C.V. led early in the third game but Reiener served Prairie into the lead with 2 aces plus a kill by Uhlenkott that made it 5-3. Prairie held the lead until C.V. tied it at 10 and again at 11 before taking an 11-12 lead. A bricked serve tied it at 12 and Landers served an ace to put Prairie back on top. Two aces by Riener gave Prairie a 17-13 lead but C.V. rallied back to tie it at 17 before missing a serve. Uhlenkott served 3 aces and then added a kill when her dig of a C.V. spike found open floor on the C.V. side. That put Prairie up 22-17. C.V. got within 22-19 before Chmelik scored a kill to the back line. A C.V. sideout was answered by a back row kill by Anna Kaschmitter. Chmelik then served as ace for the game winner and a 2 games to 1 lead. C.V. answered back in game 4 by jumping out to a quick 0-4 lead. Prairie was able to get back within 1 at 12-13 but couldn’t quite tie it. C.V. then got a 5 point service run that created some separation and Prairie was unable to rally as they lost by 8. After falling behind 0-3 in the decisive 5th game, Reiner served Prairie to a 5-3 lead with 2 aces and a kill each by Uhlenkott and Chmelik. C.V. took the lead for good at 7-8 and built the lead to 7-13 before Prairie could score again. Chmelik tried to duplicate her game 2 serving magic and scored 1 ace and Martinez scored on a block to get within 10-13 before a violation led to a side out. At match point, Martinez scored another block to give McWilliams a chance at the serve but a Prairie hitting error ended the match. Uhlenkott had 11 kills and 5 aces for the Pirates. Martinez also had 11 kills, including 3 blocks. Shears had 10 kills, 12 assists and 2 aces. McWilliams had 8 kills and 3 assists. Chmelik had 3 kills, 1 assist and 8 aces. Schwartz had 3 kills. Riener had 2 kills, 2 assists and 8 aces. Landers had 1 kill, 17 assists and 2 aces. Klapprich had 1 kill and 4 aces. Kaschmitter had 1 kill and 2 assists. The JV team won all three games against C.V., 25-14, 25-11, 15-5. The opening game was close until Kristin Wemhoff broke it open with a 6-point service run that gave Prairie a 16-8 lead. She had 4 aces and Laney Forsmann and Tara Schlader each added a kill. From there the game went back and forth until Jade Prigge went to serve at 22-14. She served 2 aces and Josie Remacle finished off the game with an emphatic kill. The second game was also close early on with 2 aces by Delanie Lockett giving Prairie a 5-3 lead. After a trade of sideouts, Prigge served 9 straight points to put Prairie in control. She had 5 aces with Remacle adding 2 kills and Schlader and Forsmann a kill each for a 15-4 lead. Prairie outscored C.V. 10-7 the rest of the way to clinch the match. In the third game Forsmann scored a kill for a sideout and Wemhoff followed with a kill. Schlader added 2 aces for a quick 4-0 lead. After 2 sideouts, Lockett served 3 straight aces for an 8-1 lead. A kill by Remacle and an ace by Olivia Klapprich made it 11-2. C.V. cut the lead to 11-5 before Mackenzie Key scored a kill to send Wemhoff to the service. 3 aces later, the match was over. The C team also won all 3 games, 25-13, 25-9, 15-9. Prairie is now 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The JV team extended their winning streak to 3 matches by beating Troy all 3 games.
