Pirates
overwhelm Kendrick
The Prairie football team rolled to an easier than expected 62-18 win over Kendrick in their home opener, which was also Homecoming, Friday, Sept. 20. It didn’t take the Pirates long to get on the scoreboard. Kendrick kicked off and Prairie took over at their 38. A false start penalty set them back to the 33 but that just gave Cole Martin an extra 5 yards on his touchdown run on the next play. He burst through the middle of the line and outraced the defenders for a 67 yard scoring play. Cole Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 13 seconds into the game. Kendrick was without their starting quarterback, senior Alex Sneve, and running back, senior Cooper Hewett, due to injuries. Backup quarterback Talon Alexander, normally a tight end, picked up 11 yards on the Tigers first play. Hayden Uhlenkott got him in the backfield on the next play for a 6 yard loss and that led to the Tigers turning the ball over on downs at their own 35 as Sam Mager tackled Chase Burke after just a 1 yard gain on 4th down and 4. Prairie needed 7 plays to pick up their second touchdown. Owen Anderson picked up 7 and Schlader 5 for a first down. Martin gained 14 and then 6 to move the ball to the 3 yard line. Martin was then hit in the backfield for a loss back to the 8. On the next play though Schlader found Derik Shears open in the end zone for a touchdown. Schlader again ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Kendrick answered with a long drive that featured a 33 yard pass play that set up first and goal at the 7. 3 plays moved the ball to the 2 with a defensive penalty included. On third and goal Shears stop Alexander for no gain and on 4th down Dean Johnson caught Burke in the backfield for a 3 yard loss. Prairie took over at the 5 and need just 2 plays to go 95 yards. Schlader made a short toss to the left side to Anderson who took the ball 32 yards to the Prairie 37. On the next play Anderson ran the ball over the left side and took the ball 63 yards for Prairie’s third touchdown of the opening quarter. Martin ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0. A blocking penalty on the kickoff set Kendrick back to their own 11 and they wound up punting from the 12. Shears returned the punt 5 yards to the Kendrick 36 and again, Prairie needed just 2 plays to score. Martin picked up 3 yards on a sweep to the right. On the next play Schlader found Shears open downfield for a 33 yard touchdown pass. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 30-0 with 11:13 left in the half. Kendrick got on the scoreboard on their ensuing possession thanks to a couple of pass plays. Kendrick took over on their own 48 after the kickoff. On 4th and 2 from the 44 Alexander found Burke down the left side for a 32 yard gain. On the next play the same 2 hooked up for the touchdown. The 2-point play failed leaving Prairie with a 30-6 lead. Kendrick tried a squib kick on the kickoff that Mager was able to corral at the Prairie 33. On the first play following the kickoff Brody Hasselstrom took the ball up the middle, broke a tackle at about midfield and then raced to the end zone for a 67 yard scoring run. Martin run in the 2-pointer to make it 38-6. A pass interference penalty against Prairie moved Kendrick to the Prairie 45 on the Tigers next possession but a 3 yard run followed by 3 incomplete passes gave Prairie the ball at their own 42. Martin had runs of 7 and 12 yards and Hasselstrom added 13 yards on a run to moved the ball to the Kendrick 26. From there Schlader rolled out to the right and found Shears open downfield for a 26 yard scoring pass. Schlader passed to Martin for the 2-pointer to make it 46-6. Kendrick’s next possession was ended by an interception by Mager at the Prairie 47. A holding penalty and then a 5 yard loss set the Pirates back to their own 32. Schlader passed to Anderson for 3 yards to set up third and 22 at the 35. He then completed a long pass downfield to Martin who ran a post pattern and got behind the defense. Schlader hit him in stride and Martin went 65 yards for another touchdown. Anderson ran in the 2 pointer to make it 54-6 with 3:12 left in the half. Kendrick was able to move down to the Prairie 22 after a 26 yard run by Alexander but then came up short on a fourth down pass completion. Anderson picked up 33 yards on a run but the half ran out on the play. With a 48 point halftime lead, the entire second half was played with a running clock. Also, Prairie ran 22 offensive plays in the first half and scored on 7 of them. Kendrick received the second half kickoff and put together a 7 play scoring drive that was capped off with a 2 yard pass from Alexander to Burke. Schlader batted away the 2-point pass making it 54-12. Prairie answered with a scoring drive of their own. Kendrick kicked deep with Martin at first muffing the catch at the 6 before picking it up and returning the ball 22 yards to the 28. Martin then picked up 30 yards on a run up the middle. 2 penalties on Kendrick helped set up a first down at the Kendrick 25. Hasselstrom took a pitch around right end for 17 yards and a first and goal at the 8. Anderson picked up 2 yards with a half the distance facemask penalty moving the ball to the 3. Martin scored on a run up the middle. Schlader passed to Shears, who bobbled then secured the ball for the 2-pointer to make it 62-12. Kendrick took over at their own 45 after a 19 yard kickoff return. 3 pass plays moved them to the Prairie 36. From there, Alexander was able to burst through the middle for a 36 yard touchdown that wound up being the final points of the game. Prairie again stopped the 2-pointer as the Pirates are 9 for 9 in stopping 2-point tries after 3 games. Prairie then put their second unit offense in the game and were able to take a bunch of time off the clock with an 11 play possession. A holding penalty kept them from running even more time off as the drive stalled at the Kendrick 25. Kendrick went to their backups and got a 27 yard gain from their backup quarterback before time ran out with them at their own 40. Prairie rolled up 351 yards rushing on 29 attempts with Martin gaining 141 yards on 11 carries and Hasselstrom adding 134 yards on 10 carries. Anderson picked up 67 yards on 4 carries.
