Pirates pickup first win
The Prairie Lady Pirates played a pair of league matches last week losing in 3 games at Genesee before picking up a much needed win in a home match against Lapwai. They lost 20-25, 14-25, 17-25 at Genesee Tuesday, Sept. 17 then beat Lapwai 25-17, 10-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-10 at Cottonwood on Thursday, Sept. 19. Kills by Madison Shears, Landers and Trinity Martinez helped Prairie retake 4-point leads after Genesee scores. At 7-3 Genesee scored a sideout and then 4 more to take their first lead. Prairie took back the lead at 10-9 and after a couple of aces by Ellea Uhlenkott had a 16-13 lead. Genesee then scored the next 5 straight points and Prairie never led again as they lost by 5. In the second game Genesee took leads of 0-3 and 2-9 on their way to an easy win. In the third game Landers served Prairie to a 2-0 lead with a pair of aces. After a pair of sideouts, a kill each by Delanie Lockett and Shears gave Prairie a 5-1 lead. Genesee then rallied to tie the game at 5. Prairie led 10-7 after an ace by Lockett. Genesee then scored 6 straight points to take the lead and Prairie never got closer than 2 the rest of the way as they fell in 3 games. Shears had 9 kills and 10 assists to lead Prairie statistically. Martinez had 4 kills and an assist. Chmelik had 3 kills, an assist and an ace. Halle Klapprich had 3 kills and an ace. Lockett had 3 kills. Uhlenkott had 3 kills, including a block, and 3 aces. Landers had 2 kills, 15 assists and 4 aces. Hope Schwartz had 2 kills and an assist. Brooklyn Riener had 1 kill. The JV team beat Genesee 25-27, 25-15, 15-9. Kristin Wemhoff served Prairie to a 6-0 lead in the opening game with 3 aces plus 2 kills by Delanie Lockett and a kill by Laney Forsmann. Genesee rallied to take a 9-13 lead. Prairie came back to tie it at 19 on a kill by Wemhoff and Jade Prigge scored a kill for a 20-19 lead. The two teams traded sideouts until Wemhoff scored a kill for a sideout and followed with an ace for a 24-22 lead. Prairie was unable to put Genesee away though as they scored 2 straight to tie it at 24. A kill by Lockett gave Prairie another game point chance but Genesee then scored the sideout and served 2 aces to win it. In the second game Olivia Klapprich served 2 acres for a 9-4 lead and after 2 sideouts, Wemhoff served Prairie to a 15-5 lead. She had 4 aces and Prigge added a kill. Genesee was able to get back within 7 at 20-13 but a dig by Wemhoff scored a sideout and Lockett served 2 aces for a 23-13 lead. Genesee was able to rally back within 23-18 before bricking a serve. Mackenzie Key then scored the game-winning kill. Genesee took the early lead in the deciding third game. Prairie finally took their first lead at 7-6 on an ace by Prigge. Genesee tied it then bricked their serve. Forsmann then served Prairie to the brink of the match with an ace and then 3 kills by Josie Remacle and a kill each by Tara Schlader and Key. A missed spike delayed the win and Genesee added another point before Key scored the match winner on a service dig. The C team lost all 3 of their games. Lockett was on the varsity for her second straight match filling in for another player who is unable to play and also provided a boost. Shears had 17 assists and Schwartz added 11 assists and 4 aces. Klapprich also provided some big plays at the net. Prairie is now 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in league play. Prairie also won the JV contest 2 games to 1.

The Lady Pirates will be at the Border Battle on Saturday The Prairie Volleyball team will take part in the annual Border Battle Tournament at Pomeroy this Saturday, Sept. 28. Prairie joins Genesee, Kamiah, Orofino and Troy to make up the Idaho team which will be opposed by Clarkston, Dayton-Waitsburg, DeSales, Pomeroy and Touchet from Washington. Each Idaho team will play each of the Washington teams during the day in best of 3 matches. Prairie’s first match is against DeSales at 9:50 a.m. on high school court #1. Their second match is set for 12:10 on High School court #2 against host Pomeroy. The rest of Prairie’s matches are also on court #2. They play Touchet at 2:30, Clarkston at 4:50 and Dayton-Waitsburg at 6 p.m. The winning state is determined by which state has the most match wins on the day. This is the 10th year of the tournament. Washington won the first year in 2010. Idaho won the next 7 straight years with Washington breaking through to win last year.
