Lady Pirates win 3 of 5 at Border Battle
The Prairie Lady Pirates dropped a home league match to Troy 17-25, 9-25, 14-25 on Thursday, Sept. 26 and then won 3 of 5 matches at the Border Battle in Pomeroy to help Idaho win 16 matches to 9 against Washington schools.
Vs Troy
Although Troy prevailed in a sweep just as they had on their home floor a week earlier, Prairie played them closer this time, keeping several rallies going and scoring about 12 more points on the night than the previous match.
Prairie is 1-6 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
Again the JV team beat Troy 2 games to 1.
Border Battle
Idaho teams Prairie, Troy, Genesee, Orofino and Kamiah battled against Washington teams Pomeroy, Clarkston, Dayton-Waitsburg, Touchet and DeSales, winning 16 of the 25 best 2 out of 3 matches played.
Troy was 5-0, Genesee 4-1, Prairie and Orofino both 3-2 and Kamiah 1-4. Prairie beat DeSales, Touchet and Dayton-Waitsburg and lost to Pomeroy and Clarkston.
Vs. DeSales
Prairie opened the day against DeSales, a Catholic high school from Walla Walla, and won 25-16, 25-9.Anna Kaschmitter makes a pass as Sierra McWilliams watches at the Border Battle.
They started slows as they fell behind 0-4 and 1-5. A kill by Delanie Lockett and an ace by Trinity Martinez cut the deficit to 3-5.
Prairie still trailed 9-12 when Ashton Landers scored a sideout kill that sent Erin Chmelik to the service line. Chemlik served 3 aces, Landers added a kill and Martinez a block as Prairie took a 15-12 lead.
Prairie led 17-15 when the DeSales server foot faulted sending Landers to the service line. Landers had missed her only serve earlier in the game but this time was perfect from the line as she served out the game. She had an ace then Ellea Uhlenkott and Lockett each scored a kill on a tip. Landers then served 4 straight aces for a 25-16 win.
In the second game Prairie took a 5-2 lead as Brooklyn Riener served 3 straight points. Jade Prigge, a JV callup for the tournament, scored a kill as did Landers and Riener added an ace.
After DeSales cut the lead to 5-4, Uhlenkott scored a kill and with Sydnee Bruegeman serving, Prigge and Landers each scored a kill for an 8-4 lead.
After 2 sideouts, Landers served 3 aces and Prigge added a kill to make it 13-5.
After 2 more sideouts it was Prigge’s turn to serve. She had 4 aces and a free ball kill while Riener added another kill for a 20-6 lead.
At 21-9 Sierra McWilliams scored a back row kill and Hope Schwartz then served out the match. She had 2 aces and added a second touch kill.
Landers had 5 kill, 11 assists and 8 aces in the match. Prigge had 3 kills and 4 aces. Martinez had 3 kills, including a block and 1 ace. Lockett had 2 kills and an assist. Uhlenkott had 2 kills and an ace. Tara Schlader had 2 kills. Chmelik had 1 kill and 3 aces. Riener had 1 kill and 1 ace. Bruegeman and McWilliams each had 1 kill.
Vs Pomeroy
In their second match of the day Prairie played host Pomeroy, Washington’s best team in the tournament with a 4-1 record on the day. Prairie lost a tough match 21-25, 23-25.
Prairie again started slow as they fell behind 0-6 and 2-10.
Landers served 3 aces to cut the deficit to 6-10 and an ace by Uhlenkott got them within 3 at 10-13.
After falling behind by 10-16, a back row spike by McWilliams put Schwartz at the service line. She had 2 aces while Landers had a kill and Chmelik a block to get Prairie within 1 at 15-16.
Twice more they got within 1 at 17-18 and 21-22 but Pomeroy held on to win by 4.
Prairie fell behind 1-7 in the second game and then fought back. They trailed 6-12 when Landers scored a sideout kill and then went to the service line for 5 aces along with a kill each by Uhlenkott and Lockett as Prairie took a 14-12 lead.
Pomeroy was able to take back the lead and led 18-22 when a kill by Landers sent McWilliams to the service line. A kill each by Lockett and Uhlenkott, a tip by Lockett and an ace gave Prairie a 23-22 lead. Pomeroy then scored the sideout on a spike off of a Prairie block and added the final 2 points to win the match.
Landers had 6 kills, 5 assists and 10 aces in the match. Lockett had 6 kills and 1 assists. Schwartz had 3 kills, 10 assists and 2 ace. Martinez had 3 kills, including a block, and an assist. Uhlenkott had 2 kills, an assist and an ace. McWilliams had 2 kills and 2 aces.  Chmelik had 2 kills. Schlader had a kill and 2 assists. Riener had a kill and an assist.
Vs. Touchet
Up next was Touchet, which like DeSales, was a newcomer to the tournament. Touchet is just west of Walla Walla. Prairie won this match 27-26, 25-11.

With an ace from McWilliams and a kill by Uhlenkott Prairie tied the score at 7-7.
They again fell behind but finally took their first lead at 15-14 after a kill by McWilliams and an ace by Schwartz.
Prairie led 19-17 after a kill by Lockett but then saw Touchet answer with 6 straight points for a 19-23 lead. Schwartz scored a kill and Landers followed with an ace and Uhlenkott a kill to make it 22-23.
Touchet scored a sideout for game point but a block by Uhlenkott gave Prairie another chance. A kill by Riener tied the score at 24-24. A missed spike by Prairie gave Touchet another game point chance but Landers scored a kill to tie it at 25. Uhlenkott served an ace to give Prairie a game-point chance but then missed a served to tie it at 26-26. Games are capped at 27 by tournament rules so the next point was the game-winner. Landers made a set for Riener who was able to score the kill for a 27-26 Prairie win.
In the second game Prairie broke it open fairly early. Bruegeman served an ace for a 4-3 lead. Laney Forsmann, another JV call-up, scored a kill and Bruegeman added 2 more aces for a 7-3 lead.
After 2 sideouts, Kristin Wemhoff, another JV call-up, served 5 straight points with Jade Prigge scoring 4 kills. Wemhoff added an ace for a 13-4 lead.
After 2 sideouts, Prigge serve 2 aces and Forsmann added a kill for a 16-5 lead.
Touchet scored 5 straight before Wemhoff scored a kill and Forsmann added an ace to make it 18-10.
After another sideout Wemhoff scored the sideout for Prairie and Schwartz was able to serve out the match.
Bruegeman scored a kill to end a long rally. Schwartz added 2 aces. Riener scored a kill and Schwartz a tip to get to match point. Hope’s next serve hit the net and went over for the match winning ace.
Martinez had 6 kills in the match. Uhlenkott had 4 kills, including a block, and an ace. Schwartz had 4 kills, 5 assists and 4 aces. Prigge had 4 kills and 2 aces. Riener had 4 kills, 2 assists and an ace. Landers had 3 kills, 9 assists and an ace. Forsmann had 3 kills and an ace. Wemhoff had 2 kills, 7 assists and an ace. McWilliams had 1 kill, 4 assists and an ace. Bruegeman had a kill and 3 aces. Lockett had a kill.
Vs. Clarkston
Prairie’s second loss of the day came against Clarkston 21-25, 19-25.
As had happened all day, Prairie fell behind early 1-4 and 2-6. They fought their way back to tie it at 13 and again at 14 and 16. They tied it a final time at 21 but could never get the point needed to take the lead.
In the second game Prairie took a 2-0 lead and led by as many as 4 at 8-4 after a 4-point service run by McWilliams. She had 3 aces and Schwartz added a tip after Martinez had scored the sideout kill to send McWilliams to the line.
Clarkston then came roaring back with 5 straight points to take the lead and Prairie led only twice more, at 11-10 after a kill by Schlader and 12-11 after a kill by Landers.
Clarkston took the lead for good at 13-14 and never looked back.
Martinez had 7 kills in the game. Uhlenkott had 4 kills, including a block, and an ace. Landers had 3 kills, 6 assists and 2 aces. McWilliams had 2 kills, 3 assists and 3 aces. Schwartz had 2 kills, 7 assists and 2 aces. Schlader had 2 kills. Halle Klapprich, who joined the team for the final 2 matches after doing her duties as Fair Queen at the Lewis County Fair, had 1 kill, 1 assist and 3 aces. Lockett had 1 kill, 1 assist and 2 aces.
Vs. Dayton-Waitsburg
In their final match of the day Prairie edged past Dayton-Waitsburg 25-22, 22-25, 15-10.Trinity Martinez makes a block against Pomeroy at the Border Battle.
For the first time all day Prairie scored the first point of a match as Klapprich scored a kill.
The first 7 points of the game were all sideouts with D-W bricking a serve to give Prairie a 4-3 lead. Landers then served 4 aces with Uhlenkott and Lockett each adding a kill for a 10-3 lead.
D-W rallied back though and tied the score at 12 and eventually took their first lead at 14-15. From there it went back and forth with several ties and a few lead changes. Prairie took the lead for good on a back row spike by McWilliams that made it 22-21.
A kill by Schlader and an ace by Uhlenkott made it 24-21.
D-W fought off one game point but Martinez ended it with a kill.
Prairie made several substitutions in the second game and it was a battle all the way through as neither team led by more than 3 points until D-W put together a run that turned a 15-13 deficit into a 15-22 lead.
Prairie got back within 2 at 21-23 and again at 22-24 before losing the game.
D-W took a 0-3 lead in the deciding third game but Prairie came right back to tie it at 3-3.
The lead changed hands a couple of times until a dig for a kill by McWilliams sent Landers to the service line. Landers serve 2 aces and Uhlenkott added a kill for a 9-6 lead.
D-W got within 1 at 9-8 and again at 10-9 and 11-10.
Another back row kill by McWilliams made it 12-10 and Schwartz was able to serve out the match. She had an ace and Martinez scored a pair of kills to finish things.
Uhlenkott had 10 kills, including a block, plus 2 aces in the match. McWilliams had 6 kills and 2 assists. Martinez also had 6 kills. Lockett had 5 kills. Bruegeman had 4 kills and 3 aces. Schlader had 4 kills and 4 assists. Klapprich had 2 kills and an ace. Riener had 2 kills. Landers had 1 kill, 17 assists and 6 aces. Wemhoff had 1 kill and 3 assists. Chmelik had 1 kill. Schwartz had 4 assists and 3 aces.
