Pirates win big over Lapwai
The Prairie football team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 77-14 thrashing of the Lapwai Wildcats at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 11.Owen Anderson was asked to try kicking extra points for the Lapwai game. He made 5 of 8 attempts. Holder is Sam Mager.
Prairie needed 4 plays to score their first points. Derik Shears returned the opening kickoff 20 yards to the Prairie 44. Owen Anderson gained 19 yards on the first play from scrimmage.
After a short gain, Cole Martin picked up 32 yards around left end to set up a first and goal at the 3. Anderson scored from there on the next play. Martin then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
On Lapwai’s first possession the Wildcats went for it on fourth and 15 from their own 20 with Martin tackling Simon Henry for a 1 yard loss to give Prairie the ball on the Lapwai 19.
A penalty wiped out most of a big gain by Martin but 2 plays later Cole Schlader went in from the 9. Anderson then showed another piece of his skill set as he came in to kick the extra point and make it 15-0.
Lapwai again turned the ball over on downs as Sam Mager tackled Henry after a 10 yard gain on fourth and 16 at the Prairie 42.
Martin picked up 12 yards and Shears followed with a 36 yard gain on an end around to the left. A short loss put Prairie at the 11 with Schlader connecting with Shears from there in the corner of the end zone for a third Prairie touchdown. Anderson’s kick sailed wide left leaving the score at 21-0.
Lapwai’s next possession was ended when Dalton Ross intercepted a Titus Yearout pass at the Lapwai 48 and returned it 3 yards to the 45.
Schlader then picked up 25 yards on a keeper around right end but had the ball knocked loose with Lapwai recovering. Yearout completed a pair of passes for gains of 42 and 24 yards to set up first and goal at the 6. After 2 incompletions, Yearout wound up scoring on a run to cut the lead to 21-6.
Prairie answered back in just 3 plays although the possession didn’t start well as a fumbled pitch led to a 9 yard loss.
Martin got that back with an 11 yard run setting up third and 8. Schlader made a short pass out to Mager on the right side and Mager used his blockers and some nifty moves to avoid a couple of tackle attempts as he went 82 yards for a touchdown. Anderson kicked the extra point for a 28-6 lead.
On Lapwai’s second play after the kickoff, Shears hit Yearout just as he was throwing and Anderson caught the fluttering pass at the Lapwai 38 and returned it 4 yards to the 34.
An 11 yard run by Martin ended the first quarter. 3 pass plays netted 16 yards for a first and goal at the 7. Anderson then ran in the ball on the next play and kicked his third extra point for a 35-6 lead.
Sam Mager has Hayden Uhlenkott and Cole Martin leading the way on what turned out to be an 82 yard catch and run for a touchdown. At left is Reid Uptmor.Lapwai again went for it on fourth down and 12 from the own 33 and were stopped after 5 yards to give Priarie the ball at the Lapwai 38.
Brody Hasselstrom went 28 yards over the left side to set up first and goal at the 10. Hasselstrom picked up 6 on the next play. After an incomplete pass, Schlader’s only incompletion of the game, Anderson scored from the 7 and then added another extra point kick to make it 42-6.
On Lapwai’s next possession Martin intercepted a pass at the 25 and returned it for a touchdown but the play was called back on a penalty.
On the next play 4 Prairie defenders met at the quarterback for a 10 yard loss. Dean Johnson, Shears, Anderson and Hayden Uhlenkott combined on the sack. After an incomplete pass, Uhlenkott tackled Wanbli Chimburas for a 10 yard loss back to the 13. Facing fourth and 30, Lapwai actually punted for the first time. Once the punt went just 6 yards you could see why they considered going for it before.
Prairie took over at the Lapwai 19 and fed Martin the ball 3 straight times for 12, 3 and then 4 yards for another touchdown. Anderson missed the kick making it 48-6.
Prairie got the ball back again on downs at the Lapwai 41 after Schlader tackled a Lapwai receiver for a 4 yard gain on fourth and 8.
Prairie needed just 2 plays to add another touchdown. Anderson picked up 9 yards and then Martin went around left end for 32 yards and the score. Anderson kicked his fifth extra point to make it 55-6.
A sack for a loss of 9 yards with Uhlenkott and Reid Uptmor combining for the tackled led to a Lapwai punt from their own 13. Lapwai actually got off a good punt this time but a personal foul penalty and player ejection against Lapwai wound up giving Prairie the ball at the Lapwai 11 yard line. The referees marked off the penalty from the point of the foul rather than adding it to the end of the return which gave Prairie an extra 10 yards of field position.
T.J. Hibbard gained 6 yards up the middle then Hasselstrom took a pitch around left end for 5 yards and the touchdown. Anderson’s extra point kick was blocked leaving it as a 61-6 lead for the Pirates.
Lapwai got a 44 yard run by Henry to set them up with a first down at the 14.  Time ran out on the Wildcats though as Hasselstrom and Martin tackled Yearout at the 2 as the half ended.
Lapwai received the second half kickoff but turned the ball over on their second play as Martin intercepted at the Lapwai 38 and returned to the 32 before being forced out of bounds.
On the next play Schlader connected with a wide open Martin for a 32 yard scoring play. Schlader then passed to Martin for the 2-point conversion to make it 69-6.
Lapwai went for it on fourth and long from their own 31 and were stopped short with Prairie taking over at the 30.
Hibbard looked like he might score on the first play as he gained 22 yards to set up first and goal at the 8. Two runs by Hasselstrom moved the ball to the 1 and on the next play, Mager, now in at quarterback, ran a sneak for the touchdown. Hibbard ran in the 2-pointer to make it 77-6.
Prairie got the ball right back after 4 incomplete passes by Lapwai.
Colton McElroy was now in a quarterback and picked up 21 yards to set up a first and goal at the 7. Lane Schumacher gained 1 and 5 yards to move the ball to the 1 but fumbled it away on the next play.
Lapwai took over at their own 2 and were finally able to move the ball against the JV defense. Henry gained 21 yards on a pass reception. Matt Coppernoll sacked Yearout for an 8 yard loss but Yearout then picked up 30 yards on a scramble.  A pass completion to Chimburas picked up 45 to set up Lapwai just outside the 10 yard line. 2 plays later Yearout connected with Arreis Bisbee for a touchdown. Yearout then ran in the 2-pointer, the first 2-point try given up by Prairie all season, to make it 77-14 with 3:06 left to play.
Prairie was then able to run out the clock.
The Pirates had 380 yards rushing on 39 attempts. Martin had 126 yards on 11 carries. Hasselstrom added 67 yards on 7 carries. Anderson had 45 yards on 7 carries. Shears had 42 yards on 2 carries. Hibbard had 36 on 3 carries. Schlader had 34 on 2 carries and McElroy had 24 on 3 carries.

Lapwai had 64 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Yearout was 10 for 35 with 3 interceptions for 159 yards passing.
Anderson had 11 tackles with 3 sacks and 1 interception. Shears had 5.5 tackles with 1 sack. Martin had 2.5 tackles with an interception. Ross had 2 tackles with an interception. Hasselstrom, Shane Hanson, Jesse Cronan, Quirt Goeckner and John Gehring each had 1 tackle and Uptmor had ½ a tackle plus a sack.
