Pirates rally falls just short
The Prairie Lady Pirates rallied from a 19 point deficit at Grangeville only to come up 2 points short as they suffered their first loss of the season, 45-47, Tuesday, Nov. 26. 
Prairie trailed 10-29 with 5:40 left in the first half as Grangeville came out forcing numerous turnovers and seemingly hitting every shot they took. Prairie, who had a high scoring win the night before against the Lewiston JV while Grangeville did not have a game, seemed to take a bit to get their legs back under them. After taking that 19 point lead, Grangeville suddenly went cold shooting the ball and Prairie was able to score the final 6 points of the half, shutting out Grangeville over that final 5:40. Madison Shears scored 2 free throws and Kristin Wemhoff added a pair of lay-ups as Prairie trailed 16-29 at the half. Wemhoff’s coming off the bench seemed to add a spark to the Pirates to help get them going. They had trailed 6-19 at the end of the first quarter as Shears scored 4 of Prairie’s 6 points with India Peery adding the other 2. Shears had 8 of Prairie’s 16 first half points. Grangeville scored first to open the second half but Shears answered with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws. Free throws would become a theme for Prairie in the quarter as Shears’ 3 was the only basket of the quarter. Prairie trailed 23-37 with 2:07 left in the third but Ciara Chaffee started a rally when she made all 3 free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot. Shears was also fouled on an attempted 3 after stealing the ball but made just 1 of 3. Ellea Uhlenkott closed out the quarter with 2 more free throws after being fouled on a putback. Prairie trailed 29-37 after outscoring Grangeville 13-8 in the quarter. Peery opened the fourth quarter scoring with a free throws and Shears followed with a 3-point play that was set up by a steal by Peery. Shears then got Prairie within 1 point at 36-37 with a 3 pointer. Grangeville broke the run with a free throw then added a 3-pointer by Camden Barger to push the lead back to 5. Chaffee was fouled on a made basket and added the free throw to cut the lead to 2 at 39-41. Grangeville answered with another 3 but Uhlenkott came back with a lay-up. With 1:29 left Barger made both ends of a 1 and 1 but Grangeville would then miss 9 of their next 10 free throw attempts. Shears made a pair of free throws and Uhlenkott drove to the hoop for a lay-up to cut the lead to 45-46 with 54 seconds left. Bailey Vanderwall made the first of 2 free throws with 48 seconds left to make it 45-47. Prairie had several opportunities after that thanks to the missed free throws by Grangeville but 2 charging fouls and a couple of other turnovers kept Prairie from making the basket that could tie the game. Shears wound up with 22 points to lead the Pirates with Uhlenkott adding 10 points. Chaffee scored 6, Wemhoff 4 and Peery 3. Vanderwall led Grangeville with 16 while Barger added 10. Grangeville led the rebounding battle 35-41. Uhlenkott had 8 to lead the Pirates with Chaffee adding 7 and Shears and Tara Schlader 6 each.  Shears
had 6 steals and Uhlenkott 4 while Chaffee had 5 assists.
Prairie was 12 for 35 from the field, 34%, and 19 for 25 at the line, 76%. Grangeville was 18 for 57 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 19 at the line, 32%. Contributing to the first half deficit were 21 turnovers. Prairie wound up with 31 for the game. Grangeville had 23 turnovers. Prairie is now 3-1 on the season and gets another chance at Grangeville this Friday, Dec. 6 at Cottonwood in the Idaho County Shootout. The JV team beat Grangeville 50-23. A basket each by Ali Rehder and Laney Forsmann gave Prairie a quick 4-0 lead. Grangeville answered with 5 straight points for what turned out to be their only lead of the game. Olivia Klapprich tied the game at 5-5 with a free throw and Rehder scored on a feed from Josie Remacle to put Prairie on top to stay with 4:03 left in the first quarter. Prairie wound up scoring 9 straight points to take a 13-5 lead as Rehder added a free throw, Hope Schwartz and Molly Johnson a basket each and Remacle a free throw. A Grangeville basket made it 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. Prairie started the second quarter with an 8-0 run with 6 of those 8 points coming on free throws. Schwartz was 3 for 4 at the line in that run while Forsmann was 2 for 2 and Remacle 1 for 2. Rehder scored the only basket as Prairie took a 20-7 lead. Grangeville tried to rally back the rest of the half but Prairie held a 25-16 lead at the break. A basket each by Johnson and Klapprich made it 29-16 early in the third quarter. After a Grangeville basket, Prairie put together a 7-0 run with 5 of those by Rehder. She had 2 free throws then Schwartz scored a basket before Rehder hit a 3-pointer to make it 36-18. Prairie led 40-21 after 3 quarters. The Bulldogs scored 2 free throws to open the fourth quarter but those were their final points of the game as Prairie scored the final 10 points of the game. Rehder wound up with 16 points to lead the scoring. Schwartz was also in double figures with 10 points. Remacle scored 9. Forsmann 6, Klapprich 5 and Johnson 4. Prairie had a 38-32 rebounding edge with Remacle grabbing 11 to lead the team. Johnson added 8 and Forsmann 7. Forsmann had 5 steals and 5 assists while Klapprich had 4 steals and Johnson and Remacle had 3 assists each. Prairie was 16 for 43 from the field, 37%, and 16 for 32 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 8 for 38 from the field, 21%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 64%.
