Pirates win 3 games
The Prairie Pirates won three games this past week, including their first win of the season. Two of those wins were league wins where Prairie is now 2-0 on the season. On Tuesday, Dec. 10 they picked up their first win as they held off Clearwater Valley 71-64 at Cottonwood. On Thursday, Dec. 12 they traveled to Riggins where they beat Salmon River 67-36. Finally on Saturday, Dec. 14 they hosted Troy and won 59-51.
Vs. C.V.
Prairie picked up their first win of the season against C.V. but it didn’t come easy. Prairie built a 20 point lead in the third quarter only to see the Rams get back within 4 with a furious rally, which the Pirates ultimately survived to win by 7.Owen Anderson drives past a C.V. defender.
C.V. jumped out to a 2-7 lead to start the game but Prairie responded with a 9-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Derik Shears scored inside then Damian Forsmann scored twice on layups to give Prairie an 8-7 lead. Owen Anderson sank a 3-pointer to make it 11-7.
C.V. then rallied to tie the score at 11-11 at the end of the quarter.
A putback by Shears opened the second quarter then Shears made an outlet pass off of a defensive rebound to Anderson for a transition lay-up to make it 15-11. Another basket inside by Shears made it 17-11.
C.V. responded with a 0-7 run to retake the lead at 17-18. A basket each by Shears and Anderson put the Pirates on top 21-18. C.V. came back to tie it at 25-25 on a 3-point with 38 seconds left in the half. Forsmann put Prairie back on top with a 22 foot 3-pointer and then hit another 3-pointer at the buzzer from even farther out to give Prairie a 31-25 halftime lead.
C.V. hit a 3-pointer to open the third quarter and cut the lead in half then Prairie took control. The Pirates put together a 13-0 run to take a 44-28 lead. A basket each by Shears, Hayden Uhlenkott and Forsmann made it 37-28. Anderson hit a 3-pointer on an inbounds feed from Sam Mager then Uhlenkott and Mager each scored a basket to complete the run. 
A 3-pointer by C.V. broke the run but Prairie responded with a 3-point play by Shears and a basket by Mager to make it 49-31.
After aC.V. score, Mager and Shears each scored inside to make it 53-33 with 1:36 left in the third quarter. C.V. closed out the quarter with a 0-7 run to pull within 53-40 by the end of the period.
Zach Rambo scored on a putback to open the fourth quarter and a steal by Uhlenkott led to a basket by Anderson for a 57-40 lead.
That’s when C.V. got hotter than heck from 3-point range and the Pirates started either turning the ball over a putting up a quick shot that missed and was rebounded by the Rams. C.V. put together a 0-13 run that featured three 3-pointers as they cut the Pirates lead to 57-53, completing a 4-20 run since Prairie held their 53-33 lead.
Coach Shawn Wolter called a timeout to settle his team down.
Anderson broke the run with a 3-pointer but C.V. answered with 2 free throws. Uhlenkott scored inside but a free throw and a basket by C.V. again had the lead down to 4 at 62-58 with 3:14 left.
Mager and Shears each scored a basket inside to push the lead back to 8 but a 3-point play plus another free throw by C.V. again had the lead down to 4 at 66-62 with 50 seconds left.
Forsmann answered with a full-court drive for a reverse lay-up. Prairie got a defensive stop that led to Mager being fouled. Mager made both ends of the 1 and 1 for a 70-62 lead. 
C.V. got a quick basket then fouled Kyle Schwartz who made the front end of a 1 and 1 with 9 seconds left to put Prairie up by 3 possessions at 71-64. That turned out to be the final score.
Prairie had 4 players score in double figures led by Shears with 17 points. Forsmann scored 14, Anderson 13 and Mager 10. Uhlenkott added 6 points with Rambo scoring 4 and Schwartz 3.
Rebounding was even at 33 each. Shears led the Pirates with 11 for a double-double. Mager added 7 rebounds.
Uhlenkott had 5 steals and Anderson had 7 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 60 from the field, 48%, and 4 for 5 at the line, 80%. C.V. was 24 for 55 from the field, 44%, and 9 for 16 at the line, 56%.
Prairie won the JV game 55-30.
Prairie jumped out to a 6-0 lead as John Gehring, Tyler Wemhoff and Lane Schumacher each scored a basket. C.V. came back to make it close by the end of the quarter at 10-7.
A 15-3 run in the second quarter helped Prairie take control of the game. It was 12-9 when Kyle Schwartz scored a free throw and a basket to make it 15-9. After a C.V. free throw, Schumacher hit a 3-pointer then Schwartz scored 3 straight baskets for a 24-10 lead. After a C.V. basket, Wemhoff scored a basket and Schwartz a free throw to make it 27-12.
Prairie led 32-17 at the half. 
The Pirates opened the third quarter with a 15-0 run to make it 47-17. Gehring opened the scoring and Shane Hanson followed with a basket. Wyatt Ross and Schumacher each made a 3-pointer to make it 42-17. A free throw by Travis Alfrey, and a basket each by Hanson and Alfrey made it 47-17.
C.V. finally scored at the 3:40 mark. Ross answered that score with another 3-pointer. Prairie led 52-21 going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth qas played with a running clock and C.V. outscored the pIrates 3-9 to cut the final margin to 25. Weston Riener hit a 3-pointer for Prairie’s only fourth quarter points.
Schwartz led the JV’s in scoring with 11 points with Schumacher adding 10. Ross and Hanson each scored 9, Wemhoff 6, Gehring 4 and Alfrey and Riener 3 each.
Prairie had a 44-38 edge on the boards led by Hason who had 10. Levi Walsh added 7 rebounds.
Schumacher had 5 steals and Ross had 4 steals and 5 assists.
The JV’s were 22 for 67 from the field, 33%, and 5 for 14 at the line, 36%. C.V. was 13 for 44 from the field, 30%, and 4 for 12 at the line, 33%.

At Salmon River
For the second straight season the Pirates played a basketball game at the Salmon River gym but this time they actually played Salmon River. Last year they played Ambrose at the Riggins gym.
Prairie jumped out to an 18-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and maintained that lead by halftime at 32-22. Despite the lead, the Pirates had some issues taking care of the ball and gave up some easy baskets. They committed just 3 turnovers in the second half as they pulled away to lead 48-27 by the end of the third quarter and continued by outscoring the Savages 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
Prairie had 3 players score in double figures led by Mager who had 13. Forsmann scored 12 and Anderson 11. In addition Uhlenkott nearly had double figures with 9 points while John Gehring scored 8, Ross 5, Wemhoff 4, Shears 3 and Rambo 2.
There was no JV game played.

Vs. Troy
The Pirates finished off their week against a good shooting, tall Trojan team.
Kyle Schwartz goes for a lay-up against Troy.Troy got off to a strong start in the game as they took a 2-9 lead. At that point Shears scored inside, Mager hit a free throw and Anderson sank a pair of free throws to pull the Pirates within 2 at 7-9 at the quarter break.
The teams traded points as Prairie tied the score 4 times before taking their first lead on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 2:44 left in the half that made it 18-17. Shears added a putback for a 20-17 lead. After a basket by Troy, Forsmann sank a long 3-point shot in the final seconds to give Prairie a 23-19 lead at the half.
Troy’s long distance shooters, Grayson Foster and Kaiden Codr kept the Trojans in the game in the third quarter as Foster had four 3-pointers and Codr 2, but Prairie maintained the lead with three triples of their own plus the inside game of Shears.
Foster hit a 3 to cut the lead to 1 to start the third quarter but a free throw by Mager and two 3-pointers by Forsmann put the Pirates up 8 at 30-22. Two 3’s by Codr against a Pirate free throw by Shears cut the lead down to 3 at 31-28.
A 3 by Anderson pushed the lead back to 6.
A Troy free throw and a 3 by Forster were answered by 2 lay-ups by Shears that kept the lead at 6 at 38-32. Another 3 by Foster was answered by a free throw and then a basket by Forsmann. After Troy’s only 2-point basket of the quarter, Shears scored a putback to make it 43-37.
Another 3 by Foster cut the lad to 43-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Zachary Stoner scored on a dunk to open the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 1. Prairie didn’t let that intimidate them though as Shears scored twice inside and Anderson added a 3 to put the lead at 8 at 50-42.
After a Foster free throw, Shears scored inside again and Forsmann sank 2 free throws to make it 54-43 with 3:24 left.
A basket by Stoner was answered by a putback by Shears to make it 56-45 with 1:51 left.
Troy scored the next 6 straight points, 4 at the free throw line, to pull within 5 with 22 seconds left. Prairie missed a couple of front ends of 1 and 1’s at the line to help the Troy rally. 
Forsmann closed out the scoring though by hitting 3 of 4 at the line for the final 8-point margin.
Forsmann and Shears each scored 21 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. They went about it in different ways as Forsmann had 3 triples and was 6 of 8 at the line while Shears made ten 2-point baskets and was 1 for 3 at the line.
Anderson was also in double figures with 11 points while Mager scored 6.
Foster led all scorers with 22 for Troy.
Prairie had a 49-40 rebounding edge. Shears and Mager each had 12 to lead the Pirates.
Shears had 2 steals and Mager had 8 assists.
Prairie was 20 for 57 from the field, 35%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Troy was 19 for 60 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%.
Prairie is now 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
Prairie won big in the JV game, 60-36.
The Pirates raced out toa 20-2 lead in the first quarter with Ross and Schumacher each scoring 6 points in the quarter while Rambo and Wemhoff added 4 each.
Troy scored the final 3 of the quarter to make it 20-5 at the quarter break.
Troy scored the first 2 of the second quarter then Prairie put together an 8-0 run with half of those points coming at the line. Riener sank a pair of 3-pointers late in the half as Prairie took a 35-18 lead.
Prairie outscored Troy 21-3 in the third quarter as Ross and Hanson each scored 8 points.
With a 35 point lead heading into the fourth quarter the C team players got the fourth quarter playing time. Keenan Shears scored Prairie’s 4 fourth quarter points while Troy scored 15 to cut the final margin to 24.
Ross wound up as the leading scorer with 14 points while Schumacher also hit double figures with 10. Rambo scored 9 while Hanson scored 8, Wemhoff 7, Riener 6, Shears 4 and Alfrey 2.
Rebounding was even at 45 each. Hanson led Prairie with 9 rebounds while Rambo and Schumacher had 6 each.
Wemhoff had 6 steals while Rambo had 5. Wemhoff had 5 assists.
The Pirates were 22 for 60 from the field, 37%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Troy was 14 for 54 from the field, 26%, and 3 for 12 at the line, 25%.
