defeat St. Maries
The Prairie Pirates started the new year with a win as they held off a 3-point barrage by St. Maries to win 77-70 at Cottonwood Saturday, Jan. 4. For the first time all season Prairie had everyone in uniform as Brody Hasselstrom made his return from an ankle injury suffered at St. Maries and Damian Forsmann was back in action after missing the final game before the Christmas break. 
St. Maries, meanwhile was without their 6’5” sophomore post, Tristan Nelson, who scored 11 against Prairie in the game at St. Maries and was basically the Lumberjacks inside option in that game. Without Nelson the Lumberjacks seemed content to fire away from the outside and they wound up with 15 three-pointers in the game compared to 12 baskets of the 2-point variety. Five of St. Maries’ 6 baskets in the first quarter were 3-pointers as they took a 12-17 lead. Cole Schlader scored 6 of those 12 Prairie points and Derik Shears added 4 while Forsmann scored the other 2. Priarie scored the final 4 points of the quarter to pull within 1 at 16-17. Owen Anderson sank a free throw and then in the final seconds, Sam Mager converted a 3-point play. A steal by Schlader led to a pair of free throws by Shears that gave Prairie their first lead of the game at 18-17. St. Maries answered with a 3 but Schlader tied it with a basket set up by a steal by Forsmann. After another St. Maries 3, Schlader and Hayden Uhlenkott each scored inside to put Prairie back on top 24-23. St. Maries took back the lead and led 28-31 when Prairie put together an 8-0 run. Anderson scored back to back lay-ups. Forsmann stole the inbounds pass after the second Anderson lay-up and scored for a 34-31 lead. Schlader then hit a pair of free throws to make it 36-31. St. Maries broke the run with a basket but a free throw and later a 3-pointer by Schlader put the Pirates up 7 at 40-33 with 1:30 left in the half. St. Maries scored the final points of the half for a 40-35 score and would have had 2 more if there had been another half second on the clock. 8 of St. Maries 13 first half baskets had been 3-points, 4 by Eli Gibson and 3 more by Brett Stancil with Randie Becktel hitting the other one. St. Maries continued the 3-point barrage in the third quarter as their first 7 baskets of the quarter were all 3-pointers. Prairie countered by going 10 for 17 from 2-point range and 3 for 3 at the line in the quarter. St. Maries took their first lead of the second half at 48-50 on a 3-pointer. Schlader tied it with 2 free throws and the Shears scored a putback and a lay-up to put Prairie back on top 54-50. 2 more 3’s by St. Maries gave the Lumberjacks the lead by Anderson scored a lay-up to tie it at 56-56. The team then traded baskets the rest of the quarter as 3 times St. Maries went up by 2 only to have Prairie answer. Prairie took the lead into the fourth when Mager converted a 3-point play with 0.9 seconds left to make it 63-62. Prairie opened the fourth quarter with 8 straight points and then used free throws down the stretch to hold off the Lumberjacks. Hasselstrom opened the fourth with a free throw and Schlader followed by converting all 3 free throws when he was fouled on a 3-point attempt. A full court drive for a lay-up by Schlader and a driving lay-up by Anderson made it 71-62. A St. Maries basket was answered by 2 free throws by Shears. Shears scored inside to answer a St. Maries basket and Forsmann added a free throw for a 76-66 lead with 2:21 left. That was Prairie’s biggest lead of the game. Zack Rambo scored Prairie’s final point. Schlader was Prairie’s top scorer for the second straight game with 25 points. Shears had a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Anderson also hit double figures in points with 11. Forsmann scored 7, Mager 6, Rambo and Hasselstrom 3 each and Uhlenkott 2. Gibson led St. Maries with 23 points before fouling out with 2:21 left to play. He was 7 for 11 from 3-point range. Prairie outrebounded the Lumberjacks 42-37. Schlader had 6 steals and Shears and Forsmann had 2 each. Forsmann had 5 assists while Mager had 4 and Schlader 3. Prairie was 28 for 60 from the field, 47%, and 19 for 29 at the line, 66%. St. Maries was 27 for 60 from the field, 45%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. St. Maries had 15 treys to just 2 for Prairie but the 19-1 edge at the line more than made up for it. Prairie is now 5-3 on the season. The JV game was close throughout with the Pirates losing on a lay-up at the buzzer, 42-44. The Prairie JV’s struggled with their shooting touch for most of the game. They hit just 4 of 16 shots in the first quarter, 3 of 17 in the second and 4 for 17 in the third but were down just 5 after 3 quarters of play.  Prairie
opened the game with a 4-0 lead on 2 free throws by Lane Schumacher and
a putback by John Gehring.
A 2-7 run gave St. Maries their first lead. Shane Hanson put Prairie back on top with a lay-up and after a 3-point play by St. Maries, Gehring tied the score at 10 with another putback. That’s where it stood at the end of the quarter. St. Maries had their own shooting struggles in the second quarter as they hit just 1 of 16 shots and were 2 of 5 at the line. That allowed Prairie to take an 18-14 halftime lead. St. Maries scored first in the quarter but Prairie answered with a 6-0 run. Gehring scored a putback then Tyler Wemhoff sank 2 free throws and Travis Alfrey drove to the hoop for a lay-up to make it 16-12. St. Maries broker the run with a free throw but a putback by Alfrey made it 18-13. Another St. Maries free throw made it 18-14 at the half. A basket by Wemhoff opened the second half scoring and put Prairie up by 6 at 20-14. Prairie led 27-23 after a 3 by Alfrey, a driving lay-up by Wyatt Ross and basket by Alfrey. St. Maries then closed out the third quarter with a 0-9 run to take a 27-32 lead into the fourth quarter. Ross drove in for a basket to open the fourth but St. Maries answered. Prairie then ran off 12 straight points to take a 41-34 lead with 3:12 to play. Wemhoff opened the run with a free throw then Gehring scored a putback. Schumacher scored a lay-up, Hanson a putback, Gehring a lay-up, Wemhoff a short baseline shot and Schumacher a free throw. St. Maries answered though with a 0-8 run that put them back on top 41-42 with 1:17 left. Hanson hit the front end of a 1 and 1 to tie it with 29.8 seconds left. Both teams had their chances but it came down to an inbounds play after a timeout by St. Marie with 5 seconds left. Inbounding from the sideline, St. Maries got a pass to post player Tristan Hill who converted a lay-up with 2 seconds left. Prairie had no timeouts left and couldn’t get the ball inbounded before the clock ran out. Gehring had a big game for the JV’s with 12 points and 19 rebounds to lead the team in both categories despite sitting out the third quarter. Alfrey scored 9 with Wemhoff and Hanson adding 6 points each. Schumacher scored 5 and Ross 4. Prairie had a 51-47 edge on the boards. Wemhoff had a big game on defense with 10 steals while Schumacher had 5 assists. Prairie was 17 for 63 from the field, 27%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. St. Maries was 18 for 61 from the field, 30%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%.
