Pirates take 2nd at District
For 28 minutes the Prairie Lady Pirates hung with Lapwai in the District Championship game but a 3-15 run in the final 4 minutes led to a 43-54 win for Lapwai Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston. Lapwai opened the game by taking a 2-7 lead but Madison Shears hit a 3 then stole the inbounds pass and scored again to tie the game. Lapwai answered with a basket but another 3 by Shears gave Prairie their first lead at 10-9. Lapwai closed the quarter with 4 straight points for a 10-13 lead. Lapwai opened the second quarter with a basket that was answered by a 3 from India Peery. Lapwai scored again then Prairie had a 5-0 run to retake the lead. Ellea Uhlenkott and Peery each scored a free throw then Peery hit another 3 for an 18-17 lead. Lapwai scored 7 of the next 8 points to take a 19-24 lead but Peery cut it to 2 at the half by banking in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 22-24. Peery opened the second half with a pair of baskets. The first after a steal and the second came on a putback as Prairie took a 26-24 lead. Lapwai then tied it but Uhlenkott scored on a drive to the hoop to put Prairie back on top. Lapwai tied it again but Shears put Prairie back into the lead with 2 free throws. Lapwai then took the lead back on a Sayq’is Greene 3-pointer. Grace Sobotta then hit a pair of free throws to make it a 3-point lead. Those two would figure heavily into Lapwai’s fourth quarter rally. A steal by Delanie Lockett led to a basket by Peery that cut the deficit to 1 point at the end of the third quarter, 32-33. Glory Sobotta sank 4 straight free throws to open the fourth quarter and give Lapwai a 5-point lead. Prairie got back into it when Ciara Chaffee made a pass from the post back out to Shears at the 3-point line for a 3-pointer. Shears then stole the inbounds pass and scored a lay-up to tie the score at 37-37. Neither side scored for almost 2 minutes until Shears hit another 3 that bounced at least twice on the rim before dropping in to give Prairie a 40-37 lead with 4:33 to play. Grace Sobotta hit a free throw to cut the lead to 2 then Lapwai started bombing away. Greene hit a pair of back-to-back 3’s that gave Lapwai a 40-44 lead. Chaffee scored on a hook shot to cut the lead to 2 then it was Grace Sobotta’s turn for back-to-back 3’s to give Lapwai a 42-50 lead with 2:10 to play. Prairie scored just 1 point in the final 2 minutes, a free throw by Shears, as Lapwai wound up winning by 11. Shears and Peery scored 19 points each to carry the scoring load for Prairie. The Pirates got just 5 points from the rest of the team, 3 by Uhlenkott and 2 by Chaffee. Prairie had a 31-30 edge on the boardfs with Kristin Wemhoff coming off the bench to pull down 8 rebounds to lead the team. Uhlenkott, Peery and Shears each had 2 steals while Lockett had 3 assists. The Pirates were 15 for 42 from the field, 36%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Lapwai was 20 for 54 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 10 at the line, 80%. Prairie had 24 turnovers to just 12 for Lapwai. The Pirates will take a 17-4 record into the state tournament. They will play District 4 champion Raft River in their opener at 12:15 PST Thursday, Feb. 20 at Columbia High School in Nampa.
