Earthquake
rattles area
An earthquake was felt in Cottonwood just before 5 p.m. last Tuesday, March 31. What we felt was from a quake that had its epicenter about 30 miles west of Challis that measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. That is the second highest intensity earthquake recorded in Idaho behind one that measured 6.9 that was also centered near Challis back in 1983. The earthquake was felt as far away as Spokane with Missoula and Boise also feeling the shock. Many parts of southern Idaho also felt several aftershocks. It is reported that they don’t believe these earthquakes are connected to the Yellowstone super-volcano, which would be a good thing. We don’t know what the Richter scale reading would have been locally but it was enough to shake the Chronicle building which is a cinder block building on a concrete slab foundation. |
