Protest set for Nezperce on Saturday
Nezperce is expected to be the site of a protest this Saturday, August 1, in relation to the person involved in the pursuit that led to a shootout with law enforcement at Ferdinand last week. The following information is provided by the Lewis County Herald. Notification posted by Peoples Rights Washington: Mark your calendar and plan to be in Idaho at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday, Aug. 1, demanding Justice for Sean. All officers involved must be charged with attempted murder. Sean Anderson is lucky to be alive. His vision remains unknown and he can’t say more than a few slurred words at a time. Pray the Officers who attempted to kill him, are held accountable and arrested for their crimes. Lewis County Sheriff’s Department: We are receiving a tremendous outpouring of community support for reports of a pending protest at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 1 at 11am. While we appreciate this outpouring, we are obligated to clear the air regarding the facts surrounding the protest, for our citizens. There are many points of misinformation being spread about this protest, including that it is being led by Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Antifa. The protest is in response to an officer involved shooting, involving two Deputies from our office, a Deputy of the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, and a Nez Perce Tribal Officer. This incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 18. Immediately following the incident the Idaho Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Idaho State Police, was activated to investigate the incident. In reality the protest is being led by Mr. Anderson’s supporters and those of Ammon Bundy. To our knowledge neither BLM, nor Antifa have any relation to this protest. Furthermore it does not appear that this protest is being organized by either group. Lewis County Sheriff’s Office supports citizens constitutionally guaranteed rights including that of peaceful protest/counter protest. We also are extremely grateful to the community for their continued support of our office. We do however ask that those on either side of the issue do so in a peaceful and lawful manner. During the protest on Aug. 1 there will be clearly marked barricades around our office as we must guarantee the continued security of our jail facility. Please do not move past these barricades unless asked to by a Deputy. For those citizens not wanting to take part in any protest/counter protest, please avoid the area of the Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 1, due to congestion and increased law enforcement presence during the event. Idaho State Police news release (July 23) The Idaho State Police, in conjunction with the Latah County Prosecutor's Office, have charged a man with felony Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer following a pursuit that resulted in shots fired last weekend in Idaho County. Arrested: Sean L. Anderson, 52, Idaho County Charged: Aggravated Assault upon a Peace Officer, firearms enhancement (F) The charges stem from an incident that began with a traffic stop early in the morning on Saturday, July 18. A Lewis County Deputy stopped a driver on Highway 12 at approximately 2:47 a.m. The driver initially stopped for the Deputy but he then drove off which began a pursuit. Other local agencies, including a second Lewis County Deputy, an Idaho County Deputy and an Officer with the Nez Perce Tribal Police assisted in the pursuit. The driver, later identified as Anderson, eventually stopped in a residential area outside of Ferdinand in Idaho County where Anderson is accused of using a shot gun and firing it in the direction of a Lewis County Deputy after which the officers returned fire. None of the officers were injured. The suspect, Anderson was hospitalized for injuries sustained when the officers returned fire. He was medically released from a Spokane hospital Thursday, July 23. Upon release, Officers with the Spokane Police Department arrested Anderson on the above charge. He was taken into custody and is now housed in the Spokane County Jail pending extradition to Idaho. At the time of the incident, the involved agencies invoked Critical Incident Task Force protocols which activated a multi-agency investigation and involvement of an independent prosecutor to avoid potential conflicts of interest. Detectives with the Idaho State Police are leading the ongoing investigation with the assistance of Agents with the FBI and the Latah County Prosecutor's Office. Anyone with information regarding this event should contact Detectives with Idaho State Police District 2 in Lewiston.
