Whatsoever
Things Are True
by Dan Coburn Pastor, Emmanuel Baptist Church pastordan@mtida.net Smoke and Mirrors. Ever notice how we get caught up in the fine points of an argument/apologetic which should be endorsed or condemned on face value? IE: We have spent years arguing over which trimester is OK to abort a child, when abortion should be abolished by every Biblical measure. When I lived in Elk City, the Earth Worshipers would "appeal" a timber sale; even a salvage sale, and win, lose or draw, the trees were bound in court long enough to be useless, so --- no sale. This brings us to our topic today, Halloween. I know, you're thinking I'm going to go off on some Religious tirade about the evils of Halloween, but that's not my intention. I'm going to share enough verses to hold you accountable, and you can decide. You can Google the origins of Halloween, and find lots of festinating stuff. All the sacrifice, appeasement of the dead aside, Let's look at what God says, cause that's ultimately all that matters. In Deut. 18, we read (vs 10) "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, o an observer of times or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord and because of these, abominations he Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee." We used to watch cartoons about demonic creatures called Gargoyles. We have shows like Ghost Hunters; Ghost Hunters hwy, Ghost Hunters international. Now whole networks are devoted to it. We argue over whether a witch is a good witch or a bad witch (one of Disney's main characters). After all, there are mediums on the Los Angles Sheriff Dept. payroll. "But they help find missing children don't they preacher?" It's referred to as "a gift" isn't it? It must be OK. Back to Halloween. The word "necromancy" means anything having to do with the dead, which is the overlying theme of Halloween. So here is the position from the God of all whose Intrinsic nature is Holiness; it is chilling, and there's really no way around it. "My People will have nothing to do with it". So the question isn't "What did I intend?" or "is this a good witch or a bad witch?", the real question is - Are you His people (person) or are you not. To him that knows it is sin, it is sin. Now some balance. I'm not saying that if you trick or treat you are going to hell. That's not my call. I did it as a child, and it's under the blood. If your child comes to our home, he/she will no doubt score some goodies, but almost certainly a Christian tract. There are alternatives, and you as parents will be held accountable, not your kids. God bless. |
