Lady Pirates win 4 matches
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 4 home volleyball matches this past week. They started with a non-league win over Highland in 3 games on Tuesday, Oct. 6. On Thursday, Oct. 8 they finally got to play Lapwai after several reschedulings and swept them twice. Finally on Monday, Oct. 12 they pulled out a 3 games to 1 win over Potlatch.
Vs. Highland
The match with Highland at Cottonwood on Tuesday, Oct. 6 was added to the Lady Pirates schedule after they lost the home match against Grangeville set for Oct. 8 due to the rescheduling of the Lapwai and Potlatch matches. Laney Forsmann knocks down a ball at the net against Highland.
Potlatch was to play at Cottonwood on Oct. 6 but got rescheduled to Monday, Oct. 12 due to coronavirus issues with a Potlatch coach. That necessitated moving the Lapwai doubleheader from Oct. 12 to Oct. 8 and canceling the Grangeville match.
Prairie swept the Huskies 25-12, 25-17, 25-15.
PraIrie jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening game as Jade Prigge, who was moved to middle with 3 regular middle blockers sitting the match out for various reason, scored the opening kill and Schwartz served the next 3 points with 2 aces plus a kill by Tara Schlader.
Highland closed back within 2 and the game stayed close until a missed serve by Highland made it 10-5 and Shears followed with 4 straight points. She had 3 aces and Laney Forsmann, normally a JV player filling in at the other middle blocker position, adding a kill for a 13-5 lead.
Sierra McWilliams then took over serving at 14-7 and served 2 aces with Prigge adding a kill to make it 17-7.
At 20-12 Shears smashed a spike over for a kill and Prigge then served out the game. Prigge had 3 aces and Shears added a kill for the 25-12 win.
Highland scored the first point of the second game but Prairie then scored the next 5. Schlader scored the sideout and Delanie Lockett followed with 2 aces plus a kill each by Schwartz and Shears.
Again Highland kept the game close until Shears took her first serving turn. A kill by Kristin Wemhoff, called up to the varsity to fill the outside hitter spot Prigge had held, sent Shears to the service line at 11-7. Shears had 3 aces in a 6-point run with McWilliams, Forsmann and Lockett each adding a kill for a 17-7 lead.
Prairie held the lead at 8-10 points the rest of the game, finally winning by 8.
Highland again scored first in the third game but a dig of a block by Lockett wound up as a kill to tie it. Schwartz then served an ace and Prigge scored on a block for a 3-1 lead.
This time it was Schlader who served 4 straight to open up the lead for Prairie. She scored a sideout kill to make it 9-5 then served an ace while Shears added 2 kills and then combined with Forsmann for a block that made it 13-5. Schlader added a second touch kill to make it 14-5.
After a couple of sideouts with Forsmann scoring on a block, Shears again had a solid service run to open up the lead further. She took over at 15-7 and served 5 straight points. She had an ace with Lockett scoring 2 kills and Forsmann and McWilliams each adding one to make it 20-7.
Highland rallied back within 7 at 21-14 before Shears scored a sideout kill and Prigge added a kill to make it 23-14. Highland scored a sideout but then missed their serve and with Lockett serving, Shears scored the match-winning kill.
Shears had 12 kills, including a block, and added 7 aces while serving a perfect 18 for 18. Schlader had 9 kills with 17 assists and 2 aces. Prigge had 8 kills, including 2 blocks with 1 assist and 6 aces. Lockett had 5 kills, 1 assist and 2 aces. Forsmann had 6 kills, including 2 blocks. McWilliams had 4 kills, 1 assist and 2 aces. Schwartz had 3 kills 16 assists and 3 aces. Wemhoff had 2 kills and 2 assists.
Prairie also won all 3 JV games 25-5, 25-9, 15-7.
Prairie took a 4-0 lead in the opening game with Kristin Wemhoff serving 2 aces and Mackenzie Key and Wemhoff each adding a kill. Then after a trade of sideouts, Key served Prairie to a 14-1 lead. She had 4 aces while Laney Forsmann scored 2 kills plus a block and Isabella Walsh and Wemhoff each added a kill.
After Julia Rehder scored a sideout kill to make it 16-3, Walsh served 5 straight points for a 21-3 lead. She had 2 aces with Wemhoff, Riley Enneking and Walsh each adding a kill.
After another trade of sideouts, Enneking served an ace and Key added a kill to get to game point at 24-4. Highland fought off one game point but Key then scored the game winning kill.
In the second game Ali Rehder served Prairie to a 5-0 lead. She had 2 aces while Key had 2 kills and Taylor Riener added another.
After a sideout, Riener sent Key tot the service line for 3 more points. Key had 2 aces and Ali Rehder added a kill to make it 9-1.
Walsh had a 3-point service run that turned an 11-4 lead into a 14-4 lead as Julia Rehder had 2 kills and Olivia Klapprich added another.
The lead held at 10-12 points until Enneking scored a sideout kill for a 22-9 lead. Riener then served out the game as Julia Rehder, Enneking and Walsh each had a kill to finish off the game.
Prairie took a 4-0 lead in the final game as Julia Rehder scored the sideout kill to open the game and then added a kill with Wemhoff serving. An ace by Wemhoff and a kill by Key made it 4-0.
After a trade of sideouts, Key served 4 straight to make it 9-1. She had 2 aces with Julia Rehder and Wemhoff each adding a kill.
Highland pulled with 9-5 before Ember Martin scored a sideout kill and Alli Geis followed with 4 straight aces to get to 14-5.
Highland fought off 2 straight match ending points before Ali Rehder scored the match-ending kill.
Vs. Lapwai
After being rescheduled several times, Prairie and Lapwai finally got together on Thursday, Oct. 8 at Cottonwood for 1 JV and 2 varsity matches. Prairie swept both varsity matches, winning the first 25-4, 25-9, 26-24 and the second 25-9, 25-7, 25-6.
Shears had 12 kills and went 100% from the service line in the opener while Schwartz logged 20 assists. Prigge had 6 kills plus 4 blocks and served 10 straight points in the match.
In the second match Schlader had 17 assists and 7 kills while McWilliams made 18 solid passes to the setter.
In the JV match, Prairie won 25-15, 15-13, 13-15.
Vs. Potlatch
Prairie and Potlatch are battling for the #3 seed into the District Tournament so this win was a big one for the Lady Pirates as they held off the Loggers 25-27, 26-24, 25-22, 25-18.
Prairie started the first game well as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Uhlenkott scored a sideout kill and Schwartz served 3 straight points with an ace, a block by Uhlenkott and a tip by Lockett.
After Potlatch scored twice, Prairie again took a 4-point lead at 6-2 on an ace by Lockett but then didn’t lead by as many as 4 again until the final game.
Potlatch came back to tie it at 6-6 and from that point on Prairie would take a 1 or 2 point lead and Potlatch would come back to tie it until the Loggers took their first lead of the night at 20-21.

Potlatch then called their second timeout within a 3-point span and answered with 3 straight points to tie the game at 24-24.
A kill by Shears made it 25-24 but Potlatch got the sideout and scored the next 2 to win it.
The second game was pretty much the reverse of the first early. Potlatch scored the first 2 points and Prairie would tie it. Prairie took a brief lead at 7-6 then Potlatch scored 5 straight for a 7-11 lead.
Prigge scored a kill and McWilliams served Prairie back into the lead at 12-11 on 2 aces, a block by Uhlenkott and a kill by Prigge.
The lead changed hands 3 more times before Prairie took a 21-20 lead on an ace by Shears. Prairie led 23-21 but Potlatch tied it at 23-23 and again at 24-24.
Schlader scored a sideout kill off of a Potlatch block and with Lockett serving, Shears scored the game-winning kill to tie the match at a game apiece.
Early on in the third game Potlatch held the advantage with Prairie leading twice at 5-4 and 7-6. Potlatch then scored 6 straight points for their biggest lead of the night at 7-12. At that point coach Julie Schumacher called a timeout to regroup.
Prairie answered with 3 straight points then saw Potlatch answer with 3 straight for a 10-15 lead. Forsmann scored a sideout kill and Shears served Prairie back into the game. She had 2 aces with Prigge scoring 2 kills and Forsmann a block as Prairie took a 16-15 lead.
Potlatch came back to retake the held and held their last lead at 20-21 after bricking a serve. A kill each by Shears and Uhlenkott made it 22-21. Potlatch tied it at 22 but a kill by Schwartz was followed by an ace from Uhlenkott and then Shears scored the game-winning kill.
In the fourth game Prairie took their first lead at 5-4 on an ace by Uhlenkott and never trailed again. 2 kills by Shears made it 7-4. After a sideout Schlader scored and then served the Pirates to an 11-5 lead on a kill by Prigge and 2 aces.
Prairie eventually led 22-10 after 2 aces by Lockett but Potlatch then started to rally.
The Loggers scored 6 straight to trim the lead to 22-16 before Schlader scored a sideout kill to end the run. Potlatch scored 2 more points before bricking a serve and Schlader then ended the match with an ace.
Shears had 13 kills in the match with 1 assist and 5 aces. Schlader had 11 kills, 21 assists and 5 aces. Prigge had 11 kills and 1 assist. Uhlenkott had 9 kills, including 3 blocks, with 1 assist and 5 aces. Lockett had 7 kills, 3 assists and 5 aces. Forsmann had 5 kills, including 1 block. Schwartz had 3 kills, 22 assists and 3 aces. McWilliams had 1 kill, 3 assists and 5 aces.
Prairie is now 11-5 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Prairie also won the JV match 25-23, 25-22, 11-15.
The two teams were very evenly matched with very few serving points on either side.
In the opening game Prairie trailed 11-15 before putting together a rally. Kills by Enneking, Julia Rehder and Key plus an ace by Enneking forged a 16-16 tie.
Prairie took an 18-17 lead on an ace by Julia Rehder.
Prairie didn’t lead again until a kill by Enneking made it 21-20. Forsmann followed with a kill for a 22-20 lead but Potlatch tied it at 22 before bricking a serve. Klapprich served an ace but Potlatch answered. Prairie then got the game winner on a tip by Wemhoff.
The second game was very similar to the first as the serve went back and forth very often with most of the scoring coming on sideouts.
Prairie managed to take a 15-10 lead after 2 aces by Key but Potlatch countered with 6 straight points to retake the lead at 15-16.
A kill and then an ace by Riener put Prairie back on top. After Potlatch tied it, a kill by Enneking put Prairie on top for good. Prairie got to match point on a kill by Key but Potlatch fought off 3 straight match points before Wemhoff again scored the game winning kill.
In the anticlimactic third game Prairie led 3-1 and 9-8 otherwise Potlatch was in control as they salvaged the third game win.
