22 turn out for Prairie boys basketball
Two seniors lead a turnout of 22 players for Prairie boys basketball this season. Those seniors are Cole Schlader and Tyler Wemhoff. Also on the varsity team this year are juniors Lane Schumacher, Brody Hasselstrom, Zach Rambo, Kyle Schwartz, Wyatt Ross and Travis Alfrey, sophomore Shane Hanson and freshman Lee Forsmann. At least that is the group that was practicing together Monday afternoon. The Pirates are coached again this year by Shane Wolter with Justin Jones and Glenn Poxleitner as assistant coaches. On the JV squad are junior Alex McElroy, making a return to the team after not playing as a sophomore; sophomores Morgan Poxleitner, Colton McElroy, Ryan Wemhoff, Weston Riener and Levi Walsh and freshmen Noah Behler, Trenton Lorentz, Ben Elven, Cody Kaschmitter, Ethan Thompson and Dylan Forsmann. This year everybody will be chasing Lapwai in the league as the Wildcats return their entire starting lineup from last year’s team that placed third at State. Only 1 other team will get to go to state this year out of our District. Prairie could contend for that spot with Kamiah, Troy, Genesee, C.V. and Logos. Potlatch graduated their whole varsity squad last year and looks like they may struggle to win very many games. The Pirates open their season with a non-league game on the road at Timberline Tuesday, Dec. 1. They come right back with a road game at Grangeville on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Their first league game will be at Lapwai, Dec. 8. Their first home game will be Friday, Dec. 11 against Genesee.  The Pirates run a line drill for conditioning at Monday’s practice.
