Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened the 2021 portion of their season with a pair of wins. They won a non-league game at Orofino Thursday, Jan. 7, 50-38 and then won a league home game over Troy, 67-16 on Saturday, Jan. 10.
In the game at Orofino a steal by Ellea Uhlenkott led to her scoring a free throw for the first point of the game. Madison Shears hit a 3-pointer for a 4-0 lead.
After Orofino got on the scoreboard, Prairie went on a 6-0 run as Tara Schlader, Kristin Wemhoff and Delanie Lockett each scored a basket.
Orofino answered with 3 free throws but Prairie came back with a 7-0 run. Wemhoff sank a free throw then Hope Schwartz twice scored on lay-ups. A steal by Shears then led to a basket by Schlader for a 17-5 lead.
After 2 more Orofino free throws, Schwartz hit a 3-pointer and then ended the scoring in the quarter with a pair of free throws giving her 9 points in the quarter despite not starting.
Schwartz opened the second quarter scoring with another pair of free throws for a 24-7 lead.
Orofino then put together a 2-7 run to cut the lead to 12 at 26-14. A basket by Schlader and a free throw by Shears put the lead back to 15 at 29-14.
Orofino cut the lead to 31-18 with a minute to play in the half but Prairie answered with a basket by Wemhoff and 2 free throws by Shears for a 35-18 halftime lead.
Prairie opened the second half with a 6-0 run for a 41-18 lead, their biggest of the game. Laney Forsmann scored a pair of baskets and Schwartz scored another lay-up.
For the rest of the third quarter Prairie scored just 1 point on a free throw by Lockett while Orofino scored 6 to pull within 42-24 after 3 quarters.
Orofino outscored Prairie 8-14 in the fourth quarter as Prairie was more into running offense until they got a lay-up  and in the process running time off the clock.
Schwartz wound up with 13 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Shears was also in double figures with 10 points. Lockett scored 7, Schlader 6, Wemhoff 5, Forsmann 4, Uhlenkott 3 and Trinity Martinez 2 as everyone who played scored.
Orofino had a 23-27 edge on the boards. Uhlenkott led Prairie with 9 rebounds.
Wemhoff had 7 steals and Shears had 6 assists and 4 steals. Schlader and Schwartz each added 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 10 for 17 from the line, 59%. Orofino was 14 for 30 from the field, 47%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%.
Prairie won the JV game 38-16.
The JVs jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Orofino didn’t score until the 1:23 mark of the first quarter.
Ali Rehder was 4-4 at the free throw line with Jade Prigge scoring 2 baskets and Riley Enneking and Olivia Klapprich each adding a basket in that 12-0 start.
After Orofino scored, Prigge closed out the first quarter with a putback to make it 14-2.
Rehder hit another pair of free throws to start the second quarter and then Prairie went ice-cold as Orofino outscored them 0-9 the rest of the half. Prairie still led 16-11 at the break.
Prairie broke a nearly 9 minute scoring drought with a basket by Enneking early in the third quarter.
After Orofino scored, Rehder answered with a basket. Prigge then scored Prairie’s next 8 points in an 11-4 run to end the third quarter. Rehder closed out the quarter with another free throw as Prairie led 29-16 after 3.
Orofino scored just 2 points in the fourth quarter while Prairie scored 9, 6 by Rehder.
Rehder wound up with 15 points to lead the scoring and went 9 for 11 at the free throw line. Prigge was right behind with 14 points. Enneking scored 4 with Klapprich and Taylor Riener scoring 2 each and Sarah Lustig scored 1.
Rebounding was even up at 30 each. Rehder had 7 to lead the Pirates.
Rehder and Enneking each had 5 steals while Klapprich had 4. Klapprich and Isabella Walsh each had 4 assists and Rehder added 3.
Prairie was 14 for 50 from the field, 28%, and 10 for 15 at the line, 67%. Orofino was 8 for 29 from the field, 28%, and 2 for 3 at the line, 67%.

In the game at Cottonwood against Troy, the Trojans scored the game’s first 2 points and then Prairie went on a 26-0 run as Troy went scoreless for nearly 11 minutes.
Wemhoff drive in for the tying lay-up and Uhlenkott put Prairie ahead for good with a free throw.
Schlader scored a putback, Uhlenkott drove in for a lay-up, Schwartz scored a lay-up, Shears scored a perimeter jumper and a lay-up, Lockett scored a lay-up and Shears ended the first quarter scoring with a 3-pointer for an 18-2 lead.
Schwartz opened the second quarter scoring with a lay-up and Forsmann followed with 2 baskets. Jade Prigge scored on an inbounds play to make it 26-2 before Troy finally scored again.
Lockett added 5 the rest of the half with Uhlenkott and Shears each adding a basket for a 34-6 lead.
After a Troy free throw, Schwartz closed out the first half with a 3-pointer for a 37-7 halftime lead.
Prairie then scored the first 17 points of the second half as Troy went scoreless until the 33 second mark of the third quarter.
Shears and Schlader each scored 4 with Uhlenkott scoring 3 and Wemhoff and Schwartz 2 each in that 17-0 run.
After a Troy basket, Schlader closed out the third quarter scoring with a lay-up off an inbounds play for a 54-9 lead.
Shears opened the scoring in the running clock fourth quarter with a 3-pointer.
Wemhoff and Forsmann each scored a pair of baskets for Priarie in the fourth with Olivia Klapprich scoring Prairie’s final 2 points.
Troy managed to score 7 in the final period, nearly doubling their score. That included their only 3-pointer of the game and a buzzer beating basket.
Shears scored 13 to lead all scorers with Schwartz adding 11 points. Wemhoff, Uhlenkott, Schlader and Forsmann each scored 8 with Lockett scoring 7 and Prigge and Klapprich 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards just as much as they did the score, 41-14. Wemhoff with 9 and Schlader with 8 were the leading rebounders.
Schwartz had 4 steals and 5 assists to lead the team in both categories. Shears added 3 steals and 3 assists and Schlader and Uhlenkott each added 3 assists. Prairie had 22 assists on 30 made baskets.
Prairie was 30 for 55 from the field, 55%, and 4 for 11 at the line, 36%. Troy was 6 for 30 from the field, 20%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
Prairie is now 11-1 on the season and 7-1 in league play.
Since Troy has no JV team, Prairie was able to schedule the Grangeville JV team and Prairie won 34-15.
The first quarter was anything but a shooting clinic as Prairie hit 1 of 10 from the field and Grangeville was 1 for 9.
Prairie took a 4-0 lead as Enneking scored on a baseline drive and Rehder added a pair of free throws.
Grangeville was held scoreless until the 5 second mark of the first quarter as Prairie led 4-2 after 1.
Prairie turned their shooting woes completely around in the second quarter as they connected on 8 of 11 shots while Grangeville’s woes continued as they hit 2 of 13.
Walsh opened the second quarter scoring with a putback and Alli Geis put in a 15 footer. Walsh scored again to make it 10-2. After a Grangeville score, Prairie put together another 6-0 run as Enneking, Chloe Rowland and Prigge each scored a basket for a 16-4 lead.
After a Grangeville 3-pointer, Rehder and Prigge each scored to close out the half with Prairie up 20-7 at the break.
Prairie outscored Grangeville 9-4 in the third quarter with Prigge scoring 3 baskets and Walsh sinking a 3-pointer. Prairie led 29-11 heading into the fourth quarter.
Rehder opened the fourth quarter scoring with a basket and Walsh sank 3 of 4 free throws for a 34-11 lead with 5:46 left to play. That was it for the Pirate scoring as Grangeville scored the final 4 points of the game to get the margin under 20.
Prigge and Walsh each scored 10 to lead the JVs in scoring. Rehder scored 6, Enneking 4 and Rowland and Geis 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 52-27. Prigge and Walsh each had 10 to lead the team as each had a double-double in the game.
Klapprich and Rowland each had 2 steals and Rehder, Klapprich and Gracie Farr each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 14 for 53 from the field, 26%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%. Grangeville was 7 for 42 from the field, 17%, and 0 for 3 at the line.
