School Board meets The school board held their annual meeting Monday, January 18 and re-elected Aaron Hinkelman as board chairman. Pat Alfrey was re-elected as vice-chair with Denise Uhlenkott continuing as clerk-treasurer and Cheri Holthaus and Jennifer Riener as assistant treasurers. Meeting dates will continue to be the third Monday of each month starting at 7 p.m. Check signers will continue to be the chair, vice-chair and clerk-treasurer with at least two signatures required on any checks. In other business the school calendar was approved for the 2021-22 school year. School will start on Wednesday, Sept. 1 and end on Thursday, June 2. (see below) Christmas Break will be a full two week with the last day of school for 2021 being Friday, Dec. 17 and school restarting January 3, 2022. In the reports Rene’ Forsmann reviews the awards given out at the December assembly. She also reported there will be a spelling bee, both local and district-wide. Details are still being worked out as to how to do it virtually. In her superintendent’s report she said she has reviewed the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction’s budget requests. Now they wait to see what the legislature will approve. She has been working with St. Mary’s personnel in getting a COVID vaccine clinic for those employees who want the shot. In her facilities update she reviewed several projects. Many of the projects will fit into health and safety moneys the district has or will soon be receiving. Projects eyed are redoing the floors in the Elementary, redoing a ramp at the high school, replacing elementary school lockers, putting cement down next to the K-1 building, redoing high school locker rooms sinks and faucets, converting high school drinking fountains over to water bottle fountains. They also want to look into the heating system at the Auxiliary Gym and into improving wi-fi connectivity in the classrooms. Jon Rehder reported he canceled the order for the Pixellot cameras. When he talked to the Booster Club about refunding the money for those, they told him to use it for other items the schools need. With the money bought a new iPad, holder and lens to provide Facebook Live for basketball and Jr. High Volleyball. He also bought a 3rd speaker for the football field announcers booth which should improve things there. He has some ideas for the remainder of the funds. Several senior projects will be presented January 20. The final senior project presentation date will be April 20. The ACT will be given on Feb. 6 in the cafeteria. Jr. High Volleyball started Jan. 11, the first game is Jan. 26. They have 13 eighth graders and 11 seventh graders. The printer room at the high school has been expanded into the old Gear-Up room. The students are doing some amazing things with the new equipment. Home and away games are going well with the new Stage 2 protocols. It’s a little more work but it’s worth it getting fans in the gyms to watch. The high school will be needing a new English teacher next year for 7th, 8th and 9th grades. It will be advertised soon. The board adjourned to an executive session for superintendent evaluation at 8 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be Monday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. The 2021-22 School Calendar which was approved at the School Board meeting Monday, Jan. 18.
