Pirates win two league games
The Prairie Pirates split a pair of league games this past week as they lost a home game against Lapwai 60-94 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, then won at Genesee 58-40 on Friday, Jan. 22.
The Pirates got blitzed from the start against Lapwai as the Wildcats came out firing and jumped out to a 0-13 lead. Meanwhile, Prairie’s high scoring guard Cole Schlader picked up his second foul 70 seconds into the game and went to the bench.
Prairie finally got on the scoreboard when Lane Schumacher hit a 3-pointer at the 5:03 mark. Brody Hasselstrom followed with a 3 of his own a minute later to cut the deficit to 6-13. That would be as close as the Pirates would get as Lapwai launched into a 2-13 run to take an 8-26 lead. Lapwai led 12-30 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie hit just 4 of 14 first quarter shots while Lapwai was 12 for 18.
The second quarter was more of the same as Prairie improved to 6 of 15 but Lapwai hit 9 of 13 including 6 of 8 from 3-point range as the Wildcats increased their lead to 29-56 by halftime.
Schumacher scored 8 of Prairie’s 29 first half points while Shane Hanson came off the bench to score 7 in the second quarter alone. Unfortunately for the Pirates, he had played all 4 quarters of the JV game and wasn’t available in the second half.
Zach Rambo and Tyler Wemhoff each scored 5 in the first half.
Rambo caught fire in the third quarter as he scored 10 points but Lapwai didn’t slow down a bit as they added another 29 points in the quarter and hit 12 of 18 shots.
Lapwai led 46-85 after 3 quarters and the running clock in the fourth helped to keep Lapwai from going over 100 points. They also sent all their big scorers to the bench.
Rambo wound up leading Prairie in scoring with 17 points while Schumacher scored 16 and Wemhoff 11. Hanson scored 7, Hasselstrom 5 and Schlader 4.
Lapwai had a 29-33 edge on the boards. Wemhoff led the Pirates with 11 while Hanson had 7 in just 1 quarter of play.
Rambo, Wyatt Ross, Wemhoff and Schlader each had 1 steals and Rambo and Schlader each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 56 from the field, 38%, and 12 for 19 at the line, 63%. Lapwai was 36 for 60 from the field, 60%, and 13 for 23 from 3-point range, 57%. They were 9 for 10 at the line.
Turnovers were not a huge factor in the game as Prairie had just 10.  It was just that Lapwai had all cylinders firing on offense, scoring at will.
The JV team got blitzed even worse than the varsity as they lost 30-78.
Lapwai jumped out to a 0-11 lead before Colton McElroy put Prairie on the board at the 5:43 mark. Lapwai then scored another 8 straight before Travis Alfrey scored to make it 4-19.
Prairie trailed 10-27 at the end of the first quarter.
Lapwai opened the second quarter with a 1-12 run as they took an 11-39 lead. Prairie trailed 16-48 at the half.
The Pirates were outscored 10-18 in the third quarter and 4-12 in the running clock fourth quarter.
Lee Forsmann was the only Pirate to score in double figures with 12 points. Hanson scored 6, Alfrey 5, Levi Waslchj 3 and McElroy and Weston Riener 2 each.
One place Prairie outplayed the Wildcats was on the boards where they had a 41-29 edge with Forsmann pulling down 16 rebounds.
Walsh had 2 steals and Hanson had 2 assists.
The JV’s were 12 for 52 from the field, 23%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Lapwai was 30 for 52 from the field, 58%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 67%.
The C team rallied from a huge deficit but came up just short as they lost 37-38.

The game at Genesee on Friday was a surprise in that the Pirates led nearly all the way and won by 18 after winning by just 1 point in the game at Cottonwood.
Genesee’s Dawson Durham, who scored 38 points in the game at Cottonwood, scored first for Genesee, then didn’t score again until the second half.
Schlader tied the score at 2-2 on a drive to the hoop and Ross put Prairie ahead for good with a lay-up at the 6:42 mark.
Wemhoff and Rambo each scored a basket and Schlader scored 2 free throws to make it 10-2.
After a 3 by Genesee, Schumacher, Ross and Schlader each scored a basket to make it 16-5.
After another Genesee basket Schlader got fouled as the buzzer sounded and made one of the 2 free throws for a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter scoring was even at 9-9 as Prairie led by 10 at the half, 26-16. Ross scored a basket and 2 free throws in the quarter while Rambo and Schlader each added a basket and Hasselstrom a free throw.
For Genesee, Sam Spence kept them in the game with 8 of the Bulldogs 9 points as he hit two 3-pointers and added a 2-point basket.
In the third quarter Durham finally got going for Genesee as he scored all 8 of their points. The Pirates however scored 14 to extend their lead to 16 by the end of the quarter.
Genesee scored to start the quarter then Schumacher hit a 3 and Wemhoff and Rambo each followed with a basket to make it 33-18.
After a 3-point play by Durham, Schlader and Wemhoff each scored a basket then Schlader scored a basket and a free throw to make it 40-21.
Durham closed out the scoring in the quarter with a 3-pointer.
Genesee was able to rally within 14 at 45-31 in the fourth quarter but got no closer.
A lay-up by Schumacher, a jumper from the elbow by Schlader and a high arcing 3 from the corner by Wemhoff made it 52-33.
Two Genesee baskets were answered by a pair of baskets by Schlader that made it 56-37.
Prairie then took their biggest lead of the game with 31 seconds left when Rambo made 2 free throws for a 58-37 lead.
Durham closed out the scoring with a 3 to make the final margin 18.
Schlader wound up with 20 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Rambo was also in double figures with 11. Wemhoff scored 9, Ross 8, Schumacher 7 and Hasselstrom 3.
Genesee had the rebounding edge 28-33. Schlader led the Pirates with 9 rebounds.
Wemhoff had 4 steals and Schlader had 4 assists.
The Pirates had just 6 turnovers in the game.
Prairie was 23 for 43 from the field, 53%, and 10 for 19 at the line, 53%. Genesee was 14 for 49 from the field, 29%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%.
Prairie is now 9-3 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
In the JV game Prairie trailed by 7 midway through the second quarter but went on to win 43-21.
Prairie took a 4-2 lead in the game as Forsmann scored a free throw and Hanson scored a basket and then a free throw.
Genesee took the lead on a 3 and then Forsmann scored a pair of free throws to make it 6-5.
Another 3 by Genesee made it 6-8 at the end of the first quarter as the Bulldogs led despite hitting just 3 of 21 shots. Prairie was just 1 for 5 but had lots of opportunities at the line, going 4 for 8.
Genesee scored the first 5 points of the second quarter for a 6-13 lead.
Forsmann scored after making a steal but Genesee answered to again lead by 7 at 8-15 with 3:50 left in the half.
Genesee wouldn’t score again until early in the third quarter as Prairie finished the half with a 7-0 run to tie the game at the break. Forsmann and Morgan Poxleitner each scored on a putback to cut the lead to 2. With 17 seconds left Benny Elven sank a 3-pointer to tie the game.
Hanson scored a free throw to give Prairie the lead in the third quarter but Genesee answered with a 3 at the 7:14 mark. That turned out to be Genesee’s only points over a span of over 13 minutes.
Prairie finished the third quarter with a 17-0 run. Riener started it with a lay-up. Hanson made 2 free throws. Riener sank a 3-pointer. Forsmann scored in the lane. Riener sank another 3-pointer. Hanson scored a putback. Riener scored a reverse lay-up and Walsh finished the quarter with a free throw for a 33-18 lead.
Hanson opened the fourth quarter with a basket to make it 19 straight points before Genesee finally scored again at the 6:31 mark.
Alex McElroy answered with a drive to the hoop and then Trenton Lorentz banked in a 3-pointer and Elven added another 3-pointer to make it 43-20. A final Genesee free throw make it 43-21.
Prairie had outscored Genesee 28-5 in the second half.
Hanson and Riener each scored 10 points to lead the JVs in scoring. Forsmann scored 9, Elven 6, Lorentz 3, Poxleitner and Alex McElroy 2 each and Walsh 1.
Genesee had a 38-40 edge on the boards. Hanson had 7 to lead Prairie while Forsmann had 6.
Alfrey had 3 steals and 4 assists while Colton McElroy also had 3 steals.
Prairie was 15 for 43 from the field, 35%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%. Genesee was 8 for 50 from the field, 16%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%.
