Pirates win at Troy
It wasn’t quite the blowout it was 9 days earlier but Prairie still had little trouble dispatching Troy as they won 56-34 at Troy, Friday, Feb. 5. Cole Schlader jumps toward the basket on this shot at Troy.
Prairie beat Troy by 50 points at Cottonwood on January 26 and it started like it was going to be a similar outing as the Pirates jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first 4 minutes of action.
Lane Schumacher started things with a 3-pointer on a cross-court feed from Brody Hasselstrom. Schumacher then stole the ball and returned the favor with Hasselstrom scoring a lay-up. A steal by Hasselstrom led to another 3-pointer by Schumacher.
Zach Rambo followed with a jumper from the elbow and then scored a lay-up after another steal by Hasselstrom. Cole Schlader got into the scoring column with a pull-up jumper from the elbow and Schumacher finished off the opening 16-0 run with a steal and drive for a lay-up.
Troy finally got on the board at the 3:40 mark with a 3-pointer. Prairie answered with a lay-up each by Schumacher and Wyatt Ross.
After another 3 by Troy, Prairie closed out the first quarter with a tip-in by Rambo and a lay-up by Schlader for a 24-6 lead.
The Pirates’ scoring pace slowed in the second quarter as they backed off on the pressure defense but still outscored Troy 10-7 to take a 34-13 halftime lead. Schumacher scored 4 in the quarter while Rambo, Hasselstrom and Tyler Wemhoff each scored 2.
Schumacher opened the second half scoring then Troy put together a 0-7 run with 2 baskets bracketing a 3-pointer. Prairie answered by outscoring Troy 8-2 the rest of the third quarter. Rambo and Schumacher each scored a basket. Ross added 2 free throws and Shane Hanson scored inside to make it 44-22 at the end of the third quarter.
Troy scored to open the fourth quarter then Prairie reeled off 10 straight points to invoke the running clock for the final 4:30 of the game. Schlader had a pair of baskets to open that run with Hasselstrom, Schumacher and Lee Forsmann each adding a basket to make it 54-24.
Kaiden Codr, one of Troy’s two seniors, got hot down the final stretch hitting two 3’s then going 4 for 4 at the free throw line as Troy cut the final margin to 22. Forsmann had Prairie’s only basket in the final 4 minutes.
Schumacher had 20 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Rambo also hitting double figures with 10 points. Schlader scored 8. Ross, Hasselstrom and Forsmann scored 4 each and Kyle Schwartz and Hanson 2 each.
Prairie controlled the board 41-29 with Schlader pulling down 13 rebounds to lead the team.
Hasselstrom had 6 steals and 5 assists while Schumacher had 3 steals and 3 assists. Ross and Schlader each added 3 assists.
The Pirates were 26 for 59 from the field, 44%, and 2 for 3 at the line. Troy was 11 for 44 from the field, 25%, and 6 for 6 at the line, 100%.
The Pirates are now 9-2 in league play and 12-3 overall.
The JV team won their game 54-28.
In similar fashion to the varsity, the JV team jumped out to a big early lead, taking a 14-0 lead by the 3 minute mark of the first quarter.
Travis Alfrey got things started when he scored as a result of a steal by Lee Forsmann.
Steals by Shane Hanson led to baskets by Forsmann and Hanson. A putback by Alfrey made it 8-0. Hanson then scored twice in the lane and then picked up an assist on a basket by Colton McElroy.
Troy scored their first points at the 2:40 mark and outscored Prairie 1-6 from that point to the end of the quarter as Prairie took a 15-6 lead into the second quarter.
Prairie then opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to build their lead to 25-6. Levi Walsh started the scoring then Noah Behler and Alfrey each scored from 3-point range. Behler then scored a putback with 1:53 left in the half for a 25-6 lead.
Troy’s only point of the second quarter came at the free throw line with 1:21 left. They were 0 for 11 from the field in the quarter.
A putback by Benny Elven and a free throw by McElroy made it 28-7 at halftime.
Prairie started the third quarter like each of the first two quarters, with a double digit scoring one. Like the second quarter this one was a 10-0 run to push the lead to 38-7. McElroy and Forsmann each scored a pair of baskets and Morgan Poxleitner added another.
Troy scored their first basket since the 18 second mark of the first quarter on a 3-pointer with 4:14 left in the third. Forsmann answered that with a 3-pointer for Prairie.
Troy then outscored the Pirates 2-9 the rest of the quarter as Prairie took a 43-19 lead into the fourth.
Prairie outscored Troy just 11-9 in the fourth as coach Justin Jones made sure everyone got a chance to play. The highlight, or at least the play that drew most reaction from the Prairie fans, of the final minutes was when Ryan Wemhoff banked in a 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key.
Forsmann wound up leading the scoring with 13 points. Hanson scored 9, Alfrey and McElroy 7 each, Behler 5, Walsh 4, Wemhoff 3 and Poxleitner, Weston Riener and Elven 2 each.
Prairie had a 43-32 advantage on the boards with Forsmann grabbing 7 rebounds while Behler and Walsh each had 6.
Hanson had 3 steals and McElroy had 3 assists.
The JVs were 23 for 58 from the field, 40%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Troy was 12 for 50 from the field, 24%, and 2 for 10 at the line, 20%.
