Lady Pirates win at Grangeville
The Prairie Lady Pirates closed out their regular season with a win at Grangeville, 48-45, Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Prairie trailed by 4 points with a minute to play and were able to pull out the victory.
Prairie got off to a good start as Kristin Wemhoff and Madison Shears each scored a basket for a 4-0 lead.
After a Grangeville basket, Shears was fouled and sank both free throws, a harbinger of things to come.
The two teams traded scores with Delanie Lockett making a basket and Wemhoff a free throw after a pair of Grangeville baskets. That made it 9-6.
A Grangeville basket then cut the lead to 9-8 but Shears answered with a 3-pointer and Ellea Uhlenkott scored after a steal by Tara Schlader for a 14-8 lead that wound up being Prairie’s biggest lead of the game.
Grangeville scored to make it 14-10 as the first quarter ended.
Grangeville again cut the lead to 1 with a basket and a free throw but Shears answered with a pair of free throws.
A pair of baskets then gave Grangeville their first lead of the game at 16-17 with 3:36 left in the half. Grangeville added 2 free throws to complete a 0-6 run and take a 16-19 lead.
A free throw by Lockett was followed by a 15 foot shot by Schlader that tied it at 19 with 1:44 left in the half. Shears then closed out the first half scoring by making 4 straight free throws to give Prairie a 23-19 halftime lead.
Shears had gone 8 for 8 at the line in the first half, 6 for 6 in the second quarter.
Grangeville started the second half with a 0-7 run to retake the lead at 23-26. Wemhoff cut the deficit to 1 with a drive to the hoop but Grangeville answered with a 3-pointer by Camden Barger.
A basket each by Uhlenkott and Wemhoff tied the scored at 29 but Barger drove for a lay-up to put Grangeville back on top.
Prairie tied it with a buzzer beater as Schlader passed to Laney Forsmann for a basket that made it 31-31.
Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a 0-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-37 with 6:20 to play.
Grangeville then kept trying to sink the 3-point dagger to put Prairie away as 3 straight trips down the floor they put up a 3-point shot within a couple passes instead of working the clock. Each time Prairie got the rebound and it led to points on their end.
Schlader scored on a drive to the hoop. As did Shears on the next possession. On the third trip, Uhlenkott was fouled and made both free throws to tie the score with 3:26 to play.
Grangeville finally sank a 3-pointer to go back on top but Prairie cut it to 1 on a putback by Lockett.
Grangeville answered with a basket and Schlader came right back with a basket.
Grangeville hit another 3 to take a 41-45 lead with 1:00 to play.
They appeared to get the ball back when Lockett took a shot to her face near the eye that didn’t get called. Lockett lost control of the ball and coach Lori Mader called timeout and got it granted with Prairie somehow keeping possession. That led to a 3-point play by Wemhoff that cut the deficit to 1 with 56 seconds left.
Grangeville looked to run some clock this time but were called for an illegal dribble with 44 seconds to play. That led to a drive to the hoop by Lockett to put Prairie ahead 46-45 with 35 seconds left. Lockett missed a chance at a 3-point play with Grangeville rebounding but the Bulldogs turned the ball over again.
Prairie got the ball inbounds to Schlader who managed to get the ball to Shears, who was fouled with 16 seconds left. Shears made both free throws for a 3-point Prairie lead.
Grangeville got a 3-point attempt by Bailey Vanderwall but it missed and Prairie rebounded and the buzzer sounded.
Shears wound up with 17 points to lead all scorers. She wound up hitting 10 of 10 at the free throw line and 3 of 5 from the field. Wemhoff and Uhlenkott each scored 8 with Lockett scoring 7, Schlader 6 and Forsmann 2.
Prairie had a 27-23 edge on the boards led by Schlader who had 11 rebounds.
Schlader also had 5 steals and 3 assists while Lockett had 4 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 33 from the field, 48%, and 15 for 21 at the line, 71%. Grangeville was 18 for 46 from the field, 39%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.
Prairie ends their regular season with an 18-2 record, 12-2 in league play.
They will open District play on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. at the PHS gym against Genesee.
The JV team finished off their season with a 48-25 win over Grangeville.
Grangeville led nearly the entire first half but Prairie turned it around in the third quarter.
Prairie scored first on a putback by Riley Enneking but Grangeville came back with 5 straight points. Ali Rehder and Jade Prigge each scored to put Prairie back on top at 6-5 but the lead lasted just 17 seconds as Grangeville closed out the first quarter with a 0-7 run for a 6-12 lead.
Taylor Riener converted a 3-point play to open the second quarter but Grangeville answered with a basket. Prigge drove to the hoop for a lay-up but Grangeville answered with a free throw for an 11-15 lead.
Riener hit 2 more free throws and then Sarah Lustig scored a lay-up on an inbounds play to tie it at 15. About a minute later Lustig scored a putback to give Prairie a 17-15 lead with 3:30 left in the half. Unfortunately those were their last points of the half as Grangeville closed with a 0-6 run to take a 17-21 halftime lead.
It was like a different Prairie team came out after the half as Prairie scored the first 14 points of the third quarter to turn a 4-point deficit into a 10-point lead. Olivia Klapprich started things with a basket. Enneking made a free throw after getting fouled on a putback attempt. At the 6:03 mark Rehder got fouled and made both free throws to give Prairie the lead at 22-21. 21 seconds later Rehder got fouled again and again, made both free throws. Isabella Walsh hit a 3-pointer at the 5 minute mark and Klapprich scored a lay-up on a feed from Rehder at the 4 minute mark. Enneking scored a lay-up on an inbounds play with 3:19 left to finish off the run and make it 31-21.
Grangeville finally scored their first points of the second half at the 3:03 mark. Rehder answered with a basket and Grangeville countered with another basket. A free throw by Rehder, a basket by Klapprich and a free throw by Alli Geis pushed the lead to 12 at 37-25 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
Grangeville scored 2 free throws but Chloe Rowland scored a basket to make it 39-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grangeville never got closer than 10 points in the final period as Prairie was able to answered each score by the Bulldogs.
Prairie took their biggest lead of the game when Prigge scored a basket and Rehder a free throw to make it 44-31 with 5:44 left. Prairie equaled that 13 point lead twice more including the final score on a basket each by Enneking and Prigge. Prigge scored the game’s final points with 3:48 left as Prairie worked clock and Grangeville either missed shots or turned it over.
Rehder wound up with 10 points to lead the JVs in scoring. Klapprich and Prigge scored 8 each. Enneking scored 7, Riener 5, Lustig 4, Walsh 3, Rowland 2 and Geis 1.
Prairie had a 28-22 edge on the boards led by Prigge and Enneking with 5 rebounds each.
Klapprich had 5 steals and 4 assists while Walsh and Rehder each had 4 assists. Prairie had 14 assists on 17 baskets.
The JVs were 17 for 36 from the field, 47%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Grangeville was 14 for 34 from the field, 41%, and 8 for 18 at the line, 44%.
