School Board meets Prairie Elementary Principal/Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann announced her retirement and it was accepted by the school board at the March meeting Monday, Marcy 15. Forsmann’s retirement will take effect on June 30, 2021. The board also approved a resolution for a $275,000 override levy to be sought by election on May 18. This is $50,000 less than the past several years. Forsmann said the stimulus money received helped to reduce the levy amount needed. Dustin Behler was approved as assistant baseball coach. The snow day on Friday, Feb. 26 was approved by the board. The board also approved setting the budget hearing for their regular meeting in June, Monday, June 21. A special executive session was scheduled for Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m. to discuss how to proceed in replacing Forsmann. The special meeting would be called to order then the board would adjourn right to executive session. In reports, Forsmann said they are planning a Spring concert on March 26. Like the winter concert it will be broadcast over Facebook and YouTube. They are trying something different for summer school this year. Since she couldn’t find a teacher that wanted to commit the time, they are using the Idaho Distance Learning Academy program. This is for students in grades K-5 to help catch them up with their peers. Flyers will be sent home and teachers will discuss it with parents of students who would be helped by summer school. Parent-teacher conferences will be March 30 and 31. Lockers will be removed from the Elementary School and stored at the old shop at the high school. New lockers will come in and be installed over spring break. The school is looking at offering the old lockers for sale at $3 each. Once music teacher Terryn Pitcher goes on maternity leave, the Elementary music schedule will become a PE schedule with Eric Coffelt and Kim Harman handling the transition. In her superintendent report Forsmann said they are going to hold the summer food program again this year. It will run from June 1 to July 30 and offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals will be pre-packaged and can be picked up at the Elementary School. More details in a flyer to go out with the students. In the facilities report Forsmann noted the new security lock installation is complete. New flooring will be put down in the elementary building over spring break. The materials have already arrived. The drinking fountains at the high school are finished. 1 of the 3 to be installed at the Elementary is finished. Some heat strips at the Auxiliary Gym plus a controller for the air intake to open when lights are on and close when lights are off has been completed. Jon Rehder reported the blood drive is set for March 16 with all 38 available slots filled. If they get 30 successful donors they will receive a $2,000 STEM grant from Vitalant. The tech class is working on an online store and with local businesses. The final senior project presentation day is April 21. If they do not complete it by then they have one last chance and that is to present to the school board on May 17. ISAT’s start April 14. The SAT will be offered April 13 in the Spirit Center at the Monastery. Madison Shears was selected to play in the North Idaho All-Star basketball game Saturday, March 20 at Post Falls. The Jr./Sr. High School spring concert is set for March 25 and will be broadcast on Facebook Live. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, April 19 at 7 p.m. |
