Pirates nominated
In a wild softball doubleheader, the Prairie Lady Pirates swept Grangeville 13-11 and 16-13 at Grangeville Monday, April 12.
Pitchers for both teams had trouble throwing strikes leading to lots of baserunners.
Prairie played as the visitors for both games.
Madison Shears stated the game for the Pirates by drawing a walk and stealing second. She went to third on a groundout to second by Mackenzie Key and scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch.
After a second out Josie Remacle singled up the middle. Tara Schlader followed with walk and Riley Enneking singled up the middle to score Remacle and make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the first Grangeville came right back using a pair of walks and 2 singles to score 3 runs and take the lead.
In the second Prairie picked up a pair of quick outs. Laney Forsmann was hit by a pitch leading off, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Shears hit a ground ball to third and Forsmann was put out trying to score.
So, Prairie had 2 outs and a runner on first. Shears stole second and wound up scoring when the first baseman made an error allowing Key to reach base. That seemed to open the floodgates. Key went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on Eve Uhlenkott’s single to left. Uhlenkott advanced to second as the throw went to third.
Remacle then tripled to deep right field to score both baserunners and scored herself when the throw from right field was misplayed. Schlader walked again and came all the way around to score when Enneking’s grounder to the pitcher got thrown into the right field foul area. Enneking advanced all the way to third on the play. She then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-3. Gracie Farr and Forsmann both walked but Grangeville then got the third out.
Grangeville added another 3 runs in their half of the second on 3 singles and 3 walks.  Key, who pitched the game for the Pirates got the third out with the bases loaded avoiding more damage.
In the third inning Prairie had just 1 hit but scored 5 runs.
Shears led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. She stole second and went to third when Key reached on an error by the second baseman. Shears then scored on a wild pitch as Key advanced to second. Uhlenkott then singled to right center to score Key.
After an out, Schlader reached on a swinging third strike that hit the dirt before the catcher could catch it. Grangeville had some confusion on the play as Schlader basically walked to first and they didn’t make a play. Schlader then stole second. Schlader then scored on error on a ground ball by Enneking who wound up at second as Grangeville tried to get Schlader on the play. Enneking went to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to make it 13-6.
Grangeville tried to rally back and had the winning run at the plate when Key finally got the third out. An error, 4 singles and a walk led to 5 runs. The fifth run scored on a forceout at second for the second out. With the winning run at the plate, Key induced a comebacker and tossed to first for the final out.
That game was called at that point due to an agreed upon 90 minute time limit.
Prairie had just 5 hits in the game. Remacle had a triple and a single and 2 RBI. Uhlenkott had 2 singles and an RBI. Enneking had a single and 2 RBI.
Key gave up 11 runs on 9 hits, all singles, with 3 strikeouts and 6 walks.

Each team went with a different pitcher in the second game and both had more trouble finding the plate than the opening game pitchers.
Shears again opened the game by drawing a walk and stole second. Key reached when the pitcher made an error with Shears going to third. Key stole second and both runners scored on Uhlenkott’s single to left.
Remacle and Schlader were both hit by pitches to load the bases and Enneking was hit by a pitch to force home Uhlenkott.
Amelia Uhlenkott grounded to short and Grangeville got Schlader out at third on the play with Remacle scoring. A double steal moved the runners up. And a wild pitch scored Enneking and moved Uhlenkott to third. After an out Ember Martin walked. Amelia Uhlenkott scored on an error. Martin advanced all the way around the bases on passed balls. Shears drew a walk and stole second. She scored on Key’s double to deep center. That made it 8-0.
Schlader pitched for Prairie in the bottom of the inning. She struck out the side but also gave up 3 walks and a hit batsman but only 1 run.
In the second inning Schlader and Enneking were both hit by pitches to start the inning. Amelia Uhlenkott then hit a little looper that fell behind second for a single to load the bases.
Forsmann hit a little pop fly toward second that was called an infield fly. It dropped but Schlader scored. Enneking wound up getting to third but developed a cramp and had to come out of the game with Farr taking her place. After a second out, Shears walked to reload the bases. Key then hit a deep drive to left center field and circled the bases for a grand slam homer. That put Prairie up 13-1.
In the bottom of the second Schlader really struggled to throw strikes and even when she did get some contact, the defense had issues. She gave up a lead off single then hit the next 2 batters. What should have been the first out wasn’t as Schlader made an error. A walk was followed by a triple. Then it was another walk and 2 hit batters. A run scored on the first out of the inning. After a walk Schlader got a strikeout for the second out. After a hit batter, an infield hit and another hit batter, coach Jeff Martin put Key back in the pitcher’s circle.
A wild pitch by Key gave up the tying run but Key then got a strikeout to end the inning with the score tied at 13-13.
For the top of the third, your reporter decided he had enough of the cold but saw Remacle lead off the inning with a homer to deep right center that gave Prairie the lead. Schlader and Farr apparently reached base and Amelia Uhlenkott doubled them home to make it 16-13.
Key then held Grangeville scoreless in the bottom of the third as Prairie held on for the win.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game. Key had a double and a homer and 5 RBI. Remacle had a homer. Amelia Uhlenkott had a single and a double and 3 RBI. Eve Uhlenkott had a single and 2 RBI.
Schlader pitcher 1 2/3 innings and gave up 3 hits and 13 runs with 4 strikeouts and 7 hit batters and 6 walks. Key picked up the win pitching 1 1/3 innings. No stats available.
