School Board approves budget The budget for the 2021-22 school year was approved at the June meeting of the school board Monday, June 21. There were a couple of questions from board members before the budget was approved. Keith Holcomb asked why the special ed expenditure was so much higher. Jon Rehder said it was due to more students qualifying for the program. The preschool agreement was presented by superintendent Rene’ Forsmann. She said it is basically the same as last year. The agreement was approved by the board. Casey Walker was approved for hire as the new math/economics teacher. She has the math certification already and plans to have the economics certification by the end of the summer. Rehder said he and the others in his group who interviewed her were very impressed. In the reports Forsmann said the summer school started last week and is going well. They have about 35 students attending. The Summer Food Program has been feeding about 30 students per day although that jumped up considerably this week with the Tri-Parish Vacation Bible School. Several students are working on this with Cara Duman as their senior projects. She said the flooring to be done this summer at the Elementary School is completed and shared some photos. There will be more done during breaks in the school year and it should be finished next summer. A ramp at the high school will also be worked on as a health and safety issue covering up asbestos tile. The gym floors will be refinished starting July 5. This wasn’t done last year so is overdue. The proposed cement pad outside the K-1 Building is planned for this summer but may not get done due to busy contractors. The new bus is supposed to be delivered by the end of the month. 5 more elementary school doors are at Jack Duman’s shop getting painted with 5 more scheduled to go once the ones he has are finished. This was Forsmann’s last board meeting as superintendent as she is retiring at the end of June. Rehder reported all three spring sports teams made it to State. The track team had a great showing with several medals won. The baseball team placed third and although the softball team was out in two games it was a great accomplishment to get to state given the fact that in March it was iffy they would even have a team. Several students are taking IDLA classes this summer in an effort to redo failed classes. Graduation went well. Cara Duman cleaned out the walk-in cooler at the high school. The racks were removed and new ones installed. The old racks were cleaned up and will be used in the kitchen storage room. The Spike Frog Volleyball camp June 7-9 was well attended. The boys and girls basketball teams both participated in the LCSC Summer League program. The football team went to Montana Tech June 10-13 for a football camp. Forrest Partlow will be recommended for hire at the July board meeting as an assistant football coach. He is Dean Johnson’s uncle. The girls varsity basketball position is still open. There have been a few applications with a couple others expressing interest. Rehder reported new principal Matt Elven would like to see a few more applications with an eye toward interviewing in September. New weight room equipment has been ordered. Brody Hasselstrom has been painting the old equipment and getting things set up for the new equipment as his senior project. Finally, Prairie has been named the School of Excellence First Place Finisher for the fourth time in the past 5 years, missing out only last year when Potlatch won the award. The board adjourned to an executive meeting at 7:35 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be Monday July 19 at 7 p.m. |
