School Board meets The School Board held their regular July meeting Monday, July 19. They approved the bus rental, per diem and facility use rates, keeping them all the same as what they have been the past year. Forrest Partlow was approved as the new assistant football coach. He is Misty Johnson’s brother and uncle of recently graduated player of the year Dean Johnson. Several resignations were approved. Becky Higgins resigned as assistant track coach. Jenny Arnzen resigned as assistant cross country coach and Tim Scheffler resigned as 7th grade girls basketball coach. Scheffler will stay on as 8th grade boys basketball coach. The current list of extra curricular assignments were approved. There are still some that will need to be filled. There was discussion about purchasing a non/CDL bus/vehicle. Superintendent Jon Rehder informed the board they are looking at a couple of different vehicles. They are looking at 11-passenger vehicles that could be used for such things as FFA, Knowledge Bowl and possibly some sports trips where the coach or advisor can drive and you wouldn’t need a CDL carrying bus driver. A motion was made and approved to move forward and have board chairman Aaron Hinkelman, superintendent Jon Rehder and David Shears make the decision as to which of the vehicles would be best for the district. This would be paid for from MAFA funds. The policy/procedure for hiring extra curricular employees was discussed. Board member Tara Klapprich had asked that this be an agenda item as she was concerned there needed to be more transparency and consistency. Rehder showed the board members what is in the policy manual and is willing to tweak it to address board member concerns. In administrative report, Rehder reported summer school is going well and concludes this Thursday, July 22. He said Becky Higgins and some others have suggested doing it 5 days a week rather than just Tuesdays and Thursdays. If a student misses one of the two days in a week they can get behind. He reported the current phase of the flooring at the Elementary School is complete and looks great. They are converting part of the boys locker room at the school into paraprofessional workspaces. In his superintendent report Rehder said the summer food program is going well with between 20 and 160 lunches handed out each day. The higher days were due to vacation bible school, basketball camp and swim lessons. He also said he has been in discussion with NICI on contingency plans n case the prison has to evacuate in the case of approaching fires or other issues. The have a memorandum of understanding that the districts buses and drivers could be used to transport inmates to the fair grounds and also asked to be able to use locker room shower facilities. In his facilities report Rehder said the flooring was completed in the elementary building for all the hallways, cafeteria, lounge, lowel-level classrooms and both locker rooms. The teachers’ lounge at the high school also got retiled. He thought it would be beneficial to the board to tour the buildings. The gym floors were being refinished this week. The high school and elementary school gyms were done by Monday with the Auxiliary gym slated for Tuesday. The Auxiliary gym hadn’t been done in over 5 years. An awning was put over the entrance door to the Auxiliary Gym. This will allow snow to slide off away into the parking area rather than on the concrete slab at the entrance. Jack Duman has painted 4 doors and has 6 more that will be done before school starts. New drinking fountains have been installed at both the high school and elementary school. Rick Forsmann and Sierra McWilliams replaced 18 sprinkler heads on the football field. They are now doing a much better job of covering the entire field as several had malfunctioned and would only spray one direction leading to numerous brown spots. Rehder reported Forsmann is transitioning well into his new position. Upcoming projects are placing carpeted tile squares on the ramp leading from the cafeteria to the gym. This will either be done in the middle of August or over Christmas break. The upper hallway classroom flooring in the Elementary School will be done next summer. They are looking at getting a quote to install a 4-foot chain link fence around the long jump and pole vault pit at the track. They have had a few people drive their vehicles across the runways and would like to eliminate that. Rehder is also looking into installation of an elevator at the high school between the main floor and the upper floor. He’d like to get pricing and see if it is economically feasible. They could possibly use some of the Covid funds for this. They had issues with the students who were on crutches not being able to get up the stairs. Rehder also gave the high school report as Matt Elven doesn’t officially take over until August 1. He reported Denise Mager is coming back to run concessions. She was going to do it last year and then they had no concessions due to Covid issues. The Dusk to Dawn Tournament went well and actually finished up about 2 hours earlier than expected at 8 a.m. The football team attended camp at Montana Tech June 10-13. Boys and girls basketball wrapped up summer league at LCSC the end of June. Each team played 6 games. Boys basketball had a load of logs delivered for their firewood fundraiser. They will be cutting it in July and August and have it delivered hopefully before school starts. Laurie Lorentz is doing a great job getting the school ready for the start of class. Registration is August 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sports physicals at St. Mary’s Clinic for all 7th, 9th and 11th grade will be the week of August 2. The athletic meeting is set for 6 p.m. on August 9. The athletic directors will go over season expectations and make sure all athletes have their physicals to participate in fall sports. First day fall sports can practice is August 9. Football will start practice Wednesday, August 11. The meeting adjourned at 8:09 p.m.
