Pirates win opener 48-14
The Prairie football team got off to a tough start then got rolling in the second quarter as they routed Glenns Ferry 48-14 in the finale of the 8-Man Classic at Middleton Saturday, August 28.
Earlier in the day Lapwai lost to Oakley 34-54, Kendrick beat Lighthouse Christian 42-36 and C.V. lost to Raft River 0-48.
The Pirates got a break right away when the opening kickoff return by Glenns Ferry ended in a fumble that was recovered by Wyatt Ross at the Pilots’ 27 yard line.
Prairie was unable to take advantage though as they fumbled it right back on a fourth down run.
Tayden Hibbard sacked Glenns Ferry quarterback Landon Stuart for a 7 yard loss that led to a punt.
Trenton Lorentz returned the punt 11 yards to the Glenns Ferry 38. Hibbard picked up 9 yards on the first play and Brody Hasselstrom followed with a 7 yard run for a first down.
Lane Schumacher completed a short pass to Hibbard for 4 yards and then picked up 4 yards on a keeper. After an incomplete pass to the end zone, Hasselstrom picked up the first down with a 3 yard run to the 11.
Schumacher gained a yard then Hasselstrom almost scored as he was marked down less than a foot from the goal line but picked up a first down.
A false start penalty set Prairie back to the 6 but Hibbard ran a counter to the left and scored. Hasselstrom scored the 2-pointer when he took a direct snap from center and went into the end zone around the left side.

Glenns Ferry marched right down the field picking big yardage, much of it on runs around the ends as they went 80 yards in 7 plays to tie the game. A 15 yard penalty against the Pirates defense aided in the drive.
That made it 8-8 with 1:43 left in the first quarter and it looked like we had a close game brewing.
Prairie took over at their own 21 after the kickoff and put together their own long drive. Hasselstrom picked up gains of 11 and 10 yards while Schumacher connected with Ross on a 26 yard pass that set Prairie up at the Glenns Ferry 11.
On the next play Schumacher was back in shotgun formation, took the snap, took a step back as if to set up to pass then ran the ball up the middle and into the end zone for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie had retaken the lead 14-8.
Glenns Ferry got a 48 yard kickoff return that set them up at the Prairie 35. The Pilots picked up a first down then stopped themselves with a pair of 10 yard penalties. Ross wound up batting away a fourth down pass attempt as Prairie took over on downs at their own 27.
The Pirates picked up a first down on 3 runs then faced a fourth down and 7 at their own 42. Schumacher tossed the ball out to Hibbard on a screen pass to the left and Hibbard wound up going 58 yards for a touchdown. After a false start on the conversion try set them back to the 8, Schumacher completed a pass to Ross for the 2-point conversion to make it 22-8 with 2:25 left in the half.
An onside kick was recovered by Glenns Ferry at their 49. Another blocking penalty on the Pilots set them back to their own 40 and Prairie took timeouts on the next couple of plays in hopes of getting the ball back before the half.
Glenns Ferry wound up punting from their own 40 and the ball went out of bounds at the Prairie 39.
After 2 incomplete pass, Schumacher picked up 22 yards on a keeper but 10 of that was called back on a holding penalty but Prairie still had the first down at the Pilot 46.
Another shot pass to Hibbard was converted into a 42 yard gain to the 7 and Prairie took another timeout with 4 seconds left.  On the next play Schumacher rolled out to the left and connected with Ross for the touchdown as time ran out in the first half. Hasselstrom added the 2-pointer on a run to make it 30-8 at halftime.
Prairie received the second half kickoff and took over at their own 22. They need just 7 plays to cover 78 yards for another touchdown. It started with a 6 yard run by Hasselstrom. Schumacher then passed to Colton McElroy for 7 yards and a first down. Next came 5 straight runs of at least 10 yards. Hasselstrom picked up 15 and Hibbard 10, both around the right side. Lorentz gained 16 around the left side. Schumacher gained 14 around right end and Hibbard finished off the drive with a 10 yard run up the middle. The 2-point run came up short as Prairie led 36-8 with 9:10 left in the third quarter.
A personal foul penalty by the Pirates on the kickoff return set up the Pilots at their own 45. Glenns Ferry overcame another holding penalty with a pair of pass completions that covered 29 yards that moved them to the Prairie 40. The drive stalled there and the Pilots wound up punting from the 45.
Prairie took over at their won 11 and survived a fumbled snap on first down. Lorentz picked up a first down with a 17 yard run to the 22. Prairie then faced fourth and 5 at the 27 and Schumacher completed a pass down the left side to McElroy for a 39 yard gain to the Glenns Ferry 34.
Hasselstrom picked up 12 yards on a run to the right to the 22.
Prairie then had a touchdown pass called back on offensive pass interference which set them back to the 37.
After an incompletion, Schumacher threw a pass toward Hasselstrom deep down the field. The pass was short but Hasselstrom adjusted better than the defender did and came up with the ball at about the 15 and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown. The 2-point pass fell incomplete but Prairie now led 42-8 with 1:25 left in the third quarter.
On the kickoff Hanson was supposed to squib it to cut down on a return but wound up making to look like an onside kick that Glenns Ferry recovered at their 46.
After a 12 yard pass completion moved the ball into Pirate territory, Stuart misfired on 2 passes and then got sacked by Hibbard and Schumacher for a 14 yard loss. The fourth down pass completion came up about 5 yards short and Prairie took over at their own 37.
The subs came on for the last play of the third quarter and for the rest of the game. Freshmen Eli Hinds and Carter Shears traded runs as Prairie picked up a first down.
A holding penalty set the Pirates back but a pass interference penalty on Glenns Ferry moved the ball tot the Glenns Ferry 47. Another holding penalty set the Pirates back and after a 6 yard run by Ravin Cronan, the Pirates faced a third down at the 50. McElroy, in at quarterback, passed deep down field to Benny Elven who came up with the ball as he and the defender came together. The defender fell down and Elven went into the end zone for Prairie’s final touchdown of the game. The two point try failed but Prairie now led 48-8 and the running clock was invoked with 8:44 left to play.
Glenns Ferry was able to put a scoring drive together against Prairie’s defensive subs as they went 75 yards on 6 plays.  Their 2-point try failed leaving the score at 48-14 with 3:37 left.
The kickoff went into the end zone as Prairie too over at the 20. An illegal substitution penalty against Glenns Ferry moved the ball to the 25 and Shears then picked up 11 yards for a first down at the 36. After Hinds picked up 7 yards, Prairie was able to line up in victory formation and run out the clock.
We had the Pirates with a balanced offense as they picked  up 277 yards rushing and 270 passing. Defensively they held Glenns Ferry under 200 yards at 198.
Hasselstrom led the Pirates with 81 yards on 12 carries. Schumacher had 61 on 9 carries, Lorentz 52 on 6 carries and Hibbard 48 on 6 carries.
Schumacher completed 8 of 16 passes for 220 yards while McElroy was 1 for 1 for 50 yards.
Hibbard had 3 catches for 104 yards. McElroy had 2 for 46. Ross had 2 for 33. Elven had 1 for 50 and Hasselstrom had 1 for 37.
Wyatt Castagneto was pretty much the whole Glenns Ferry offense as he had 8 runs for 67 yards and caught 8 passes for 96, 162 of the Pilots’ 198 yards of offense.
Stuart was 9 for 16 for 95 yards passing. The Pilots had 103 yards rushing on 25 attempts.
On defense Hasselstrom had 6 tackles. Hibbard had 4 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Ross had 2 tackles and a fimble recovery. Ravin Cronan had 2 tackles. Hanson, Lorentz, Jesse Cronan and McElroy each had 1 tackled and Schumacher had half a sack.
The Pirates now have a week off before starting league play with their home opener against Clearwater Valley on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
