At Grangeville
The Lady Pirates suffered their first
defeat of the season at Grangeville as the Idaho County Shootout was
revived after a year off due to COVID-19.It was the first time Prairie had lost to Grangeville since the 2015 Idaho County Shootout on Dec. 4, 2015. Grangeville scored first as Bailey Vanderwall, daughter of Prairie graduate Jessica Funke Vanderwall, sank a 3-pointer. Prairie then took their first lead as Schlader made 3 straight baskets inside. Grangeville tied it with a 3-pointer by Camden Barger which kicked off a 0-12 Grangeville scoring run that featured 3 more baskets by Vanderwall, one of them a 3. Schlader broke the run with a 1-hander off the glass at the 2:28 mark. Forsmann then scored from just inside the 3-point line and Schlader closed out the quarter with a lay-up off an inbounds pass from Wemhoff. Prairie trailed 12-15 after 1 quarter after trailing by 9 at 6-15. Remacle scored a putback to open the second quarter and Lockett followed with 2 free throws to give Prairie the lead back. The two free throws came on a strange call where the referee signaled 2 free throws on the foul as if Lockett was in the act of shooting. Lockett wound up putting the ball in the hoop but it got waived off. Why would you waive off a basket but still award 2 free throws when it wasn’t yet double-bonus? Schlader scored on a putback to came a 12-0 Prairie run and give the Pirates an 18-15 lead. Grangeville scored to break the run but that turned out to be their only 2 points of the quarter. Prairie closed the half with a 5-0 run for a 23-17 halftime lead. Schlader and Wemhoff each made a free throw and Forsmann hit a 3 for the final points of the half. Things turned back Grangeville’s way in the third quarter. Grangeville started the quarter with a 1-10 run to retake the lead. Grangerville got within 2 at 24-22 on another 3 by Vanderwall. Then came a pivotal play. Prairie got hit with a technical foul allegedly for too many players on the floor. Prairie coach Lori Mader said it shouldn’t have been called but even after the referees got together for a discussion they stuck with the call. Barger made both free throws to give Grangeville the lead. Grangeville then got a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, essentially a 5-point swing. A free throw by Schlader and a lay-up by Wemhoff tied the scored at 27 but another 3 by Grangeville put them back on top. Wemhoff added a free throw to make it 28-30 after 3 quarters. In the fourth Remacle scored 2 free throws to tie it at 30 and then Wemhoff took the ball full court for a lay-up to put Prairie back on top at 32-30. The lead lasted just 20 seconds as Grangeville’s Macy Smith put the Bulldogs back on top with a 3. Schlader scored to put Prairie back on top but Grangeville answered with a basket. A free throw by Lockett was answered with another Grangeville basket for a 35-37 Bulldog lead. After a Grangeville basket put Grangeville back on top, Remacle scored a reverse lay-up for the lead. Lockett added a free throw and Wemhoff a lay-up for a 43-39 edge. Grangeville then took back the lead for good as they connected on three 3-pointers against a lay-up by Schlader for a 45-48 edge. Schlader scored a free throw to cut the lead to 2. Wemhoff then appeared to tie the scored at 48 with 30 seconds left on a drive to the hoop but was called for an offensive foul, her fifth foul of the game. Grangeville then made 4 free throws to push the lead to 6 with 6 seconds to play. Remacle scored at the buzzer to cut the final margin to 4. Schlader wound up with a huge game with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Remacle also had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Wemhoff scored 6, Forsmann 5 and Lockett 4.
