Lady Pirates win 1 of 2
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of league games this past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 7, they traveled to Lapwai and lost 45-47 on a buzzer-beater. On Friday, Dec. 10, they hosted Genesee and broke open a tight game in the second quarter and went on to win easily, 72-30.
At Lapwai
The way the game started at Lapwai, it looked like the Wildcats were going to cruise to an easy win as they jumped out to a 2-11 lead as Prairie had 11 first quarter turnovers andMolly Johnson shoots at Lapwai. She had a career high 9 points in the game and followed it up with 8 against Genesee. made just 1 of their first 14 shots, a drive to the hoop by Kristin Wemhoff.
With 5 seconds left in the quarter, Wemhoff scored again on a drive to make it 4-11.
Lapwai led 8-16 in the second before Prairie started whittling away at the lead. Laney Forsmann scored a putback and Josie Remacle scored on a great inside feed from Tara Schlader who had just made an offensive rebound. That got Prairie back within 4 at 12-16.
Lapwai scored then Schlader scored inside to make it 14-18. After another Lapwai basket, Schlader scored inside and Wemhoff scored a free throw. A steal by Molly Johnson led to a putback by Wemhoff. Johnson was fouled and made the second of 2 free throws to tie the game at 20-20.
A Lapwai basket was answered by a free throw by Forsmann then Lapwai made a free throw to take a 21-23 lead at the half.
Wemhoff opened the third quarter scoring to tie the game at 23-23 but Lapwai then scored 5 straight to retake the lead. Prairie answered right back with their own scoring run. Wemhoff made 2 free throws, Schlader banked in a shot and then Johnson scored to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 29-28 with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Johnson scored again 30 seconds later to make it 31-28.
Lapwai scored but Prairie then closed out the quarter with Delanie Lockett scoring on an inbounds play to make it 33-30.
Lapwai scored 2 baskets to retake the lead at 33-34 but Prairie answered. Wemhoff stole the ball and scored to put Prairie back on top. Johnson then scored on a feed from Forsmann and Lockett made it a 40-34 lead on a 3-pointer after a steal by Wemhoff.
Lapwai came right back with a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 2 but Forsmann scored to make it 42-38 with 1:55 to play.
A 3-point play by Lapwai cut the lead to 1 but Johnson then hit 2 of 4 free throws for a 44-41 lead with 44 seconds left.
Another 3-point play by Lapwai tied the score with 38 seconds left.
Wemhoff was fouled with 26 seconds left and made the second of 2 free throws to give Prairie a 45-44 lead.
With 21 seconds left Schlader, who had picked up her 4th foul 30 seconds into the second half, picked up her fifth foul. Lapwai made the second of two free throws to tie the game then stole the inbounds pass and called timeout.
Lapwai then scored the winning basket with just 2 seconds left and Prairie was unable to do anything inbounding the ball and they were out of timeouts.
Just like all 3 games the two teams played last year, Prairie held a fourth quarter lead but was unable to close the deal.
Wemhoff led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 16 points. Johnson scored 9 in her best scoring game so far. Lockett and Forsmann scored 7 each with Schlader scoring 4 and Remacle 2.
Prairie outrebounded Lapwai 56-35 with Schlader grabbing 25 rebounds to lead the team. Johnson also was in double figures with 11 rebounds.
Schlader had 5 steals and 3 assists while Wemhoff had 4 steals and 3 assists. Forsmann also had 3 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 60 from the field, 28%, and 10 for 26 at the line, 38%. If they had made just 50% at the line (13 for 26) they would have won the game. Lapwai was 19 for 55 from the field, 35%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%.
Prairie had 26 turnovers in the game compared to 20 for Lapwai.
The JV game finished the same way as the varsity game however this time it was Prairie that scored the game-winner in the final seconds of a 63-61 win.
Lapwai scored first but Prairie took their first lead on a 3-pointer by Lexi Schumacher. She and Alli Geis each followed with a putback for a 7-2 lead.
Lapwai cut the lead to 1 at 9-8 but a 3-point play by Isabella Walsh and a 3-pointer by Riley Enneking led to a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lapwai got 5 quick points in the second quarter to retake the lead. Prairie tied it at 17 on a bank shot by Geis but Lapwai took back the lead and held it almost to the end of the half.
Lapwai led 26-30 with 1:33 left in the half. Enneking scored with 12 seconds left to cut the lead to 2 and then Walsh stole the ball and that led to a baseline shot by Schumacher as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 30-30 at the half.
Prairie started the second half with a 9-0 run. Schumacher started it with a 3 with Geis adding a basket. A steal by Schumacher led to a basket and Walsh scored 2 free throws to make it 39-30.
After 4 points by Lapwai, Prairie went on an 8-0 run to take a 47-34 lead. Walsh started it with 2 free throws. Sarah Lustig scored a putback. Schumacher and Geis each added a basket to finish the run.
Prairie led by 12, 53-41, at the end of the quarter.
Prairie still led by 12 at 56-44 after a free throw by Geis and a basket by Walsh with 7:03 left to play.
At that point things fell apart for Prairie as the Wildcats ramped up their defense forcing numerous turnovers in a 0-11 run that cut the lead to just 1 at 56-55 with 3:10 still to play.
A 3 by Schumacher broke the run but Lapwai answered with a 3 of their own with 1:43 left to play.
Both teams had opportunities but couldn’t get a shot to fall for well over a minute. With 24 seconds left Walsh made both ends of a 1 and 1 for a 61-58 lead.
Lapwai then tied it with a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left.
Prairie went down the floor and Walsh found Geis open in the lane for a short bank shot that gave Prairie the win.
Schumacher led the scoring with 20 points, 10 in each half. Walsh and Enneking each scored 15 with Enneking scoring 13 in the first half and Walsh 12 in the second half. Geis scored 11 and Lustig scored 2.
Prairie outrebounded Lapwai 46-35. Geis had a double-double with a team leading 16 rebounds. Enneking added 8 rebounds.
Enneking had 3 steals and Walsh almost had a double-double as she had 9 assists.
Prairie had 18 turnovers in the game, 11 in the fourth quarter during Lapwai’s rally. Lapwai had 22 turnovers.
The JVs were 25 for 70 from the field, 36%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Lapwai was 23 for 53 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 17 at the line, 41%.

Vs. Genesee
In the game against Genesee at Cottonwood the Bulldogs hit 4 early 3-pointers to take a 13-16 lead in the second quarter then Schlader found her shooting touch and Prairie dominated the rest of the game.
Tara Schlader goes for 2 of her 34 points against Genesee. Ali Rehder can be seen in the background.Genesee’s Isabelle Monk started the scoring with a 25 foot 3-pointer. Prairie tied it with a basket by Johnson and a free throw by Schlader. Then Monk hit another long 3-pointer.
A 3-point play By Schlader tied it and Wemhoff gave Prairie their first lead with a basket. After Genesee tied it, Wemhoff and Johnson scored to give Prairie a 12-8 lead after 1 quarter.
Another 3 by Monk and 2 free throws by Genesee put them back into the lead. Remacle tied it with a free throw but Genesee’s Shelby Hanson sank a 3 for a 13-16 Bulldog lead.
Two free throws by Johnson kicked off an 18-1 run by the Pirates. Schlader scored on an inbounds play to give Prairie the lead and Forsmann followed with a perimeter shot. After a Genesee free throw, Wemhoff scored. Schlader scored two baskets. Johnson scored and then Schlader scored 2 more baskets for a 31-17 lead.
Genesee then scored their first basket in almost 5 and a half minutes to make it 31-19 at the half.
Schlader, who had started 1 for 10 from the field, made 5 of her last 6 shots of the half.
Schlader and Forsmann scored all of Prairie’s third quarter points but they scored enough for Prairie to built their lead to 48-26. Schlader hit 5 of 7 shots from the field for 10 points and Forsmann was 3 for 4 for 7 points which included a 3-pointer.
Genesee meanwhile managed to scored 7 on a pair of 3’s and a free throw.
Monk who had made 4 of her first 6 shots for Genesee for 12 first half points, was shut out in the second half going 0 for 3 from the field and 0 for 2 at the line.
Schlader kept up her onslaught in the fourth quarter as she hit 5 of 7 from the field. She scored 10 points each in the second, third and fourth quarters and wound up outscoring Genesee all by herself, 34-30.
Lockett found the range on her shot in the fourth quarter and was 3 for 3 after going 0 for 7 in the first 3 quarters.
Prairie had a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter that took their lead from 53-29 to 69-29. With 5:08 to play they invoked the running clock when Lockett scored a putback.
Schlader wound up with a monster double-double with 34 points and 17 rebounds. Meanwhile Wemhoff had a triple-double with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists. She nearly had a quadruple double as she added 7 steals. Forsmann scored 90 points, Johnson 8, Lockett 7, Isabella Walsh 3 and Remacle 1.
Prairie outrebounded Genesee 67-26. Johnson and Lockett each added 8 rebounds.
Forsrmann added 5 steals and Schlader 4.
Prairie was 32 for 90 from the field, 36%, and 6 for 14 at the line, 43%. Genesee was 9 for 28 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 18 at the line, 33%.
Prairie is now 4-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
Prairie also won big in the JV game by a score of 49-19.
Walsh got the team off to a good start, scoring their first 8 points as Prairie took leads of 6-0 and 8-2. Lustig then scored to make it 10-2.
The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter as Prairie took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
Lustig opened the second quarter scoring but Genesee answered. Prairie then went on a 9-0 run to blow the game open. Lustig started the run with a putback. Enneking scored down low. Geis scored a putback and then added a free throw and another basket on an inbounds play to make it 25-8.
After a Genesee basket, Aubree Rehder scored a free throw and then a basket to make it 28-10. After a Genesee free throw, Rehder closed out the first half scoring with a basket to make it 30-11.
Genesee scored the first 4 points of the second half but then Prairie went on an 11-0 run to take a 41-15 lead. They led 45-17 after 3 quarters as Schumacher closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer.
Neither team scored much in the fourth quarter as Genesee scored their only 2 points early on. Prairie didn’t score until Kaylie Lockett got a basket at the 4:23 mark. The final two points of the game came with 12.8 seconds left as Geis made 2 free throws to invoke a running clock for just those final seconds.
Walsh scored 14 to lead the scoring with Geis adding 13. Schumacher and Lustig each scored 6 while Rehder scored 4 and Enneking and Lockett added 2 each.
Prairie had a 63-47 advantage on the boards. Geis had a double-double with 11 rebounds while Ellie Nuxoll led the team with 12 rebounds. Rehder and Schumacher each added 9 rebounds.
Schumacher had 5 steals and 5 assists while Lustig and Walsh each added 3 steals.
Prairie was 21 for 71 from the field, 30% ,and 4 for 12 at the line, 33%. Gensee was 8 for 60 from the field, 13%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%.
