Hinkelman re-elected as School Board Chairman Aaron Hinkelman was re-elected as board chairman at the January meeting of the school board Wednesday, Jan. 19. Re-elected board members Hinkelman, Pat Alfrey and Keith Holcomb all took the oath of office. Pat Alfrey was re-elected as vice-chairman with Denise Uhlenkott as clerk-treasurer and Cheri Holthaus and Jennifer Arnzen as assistant treasurers. Meeting dates and times will continue to be the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Check signers will remain Hinkelman, Alfrey and Uhlenkott as the chairman, vice-chair and treasurer. Meetings will continue to be posted at the two Credit Union locations and at the Elementary School. Jon Rehder will be the Civil Rights Officer. Emergency closure days on Jan. 3, 4 and 6 were approved by the board. Holcomb asked what happens if they don’t approve. Rehder said they would have to make those days up. As it is with state attendance requirements based on hours in class rather than days, Rehder says it would take several more school cancellations before they need to worry about making up days. Lynn Gehring was approved for hire as a new cook while Daphne Hanson was approved for hire as the new bus driver. Hanson will drive the Ferdinand route while David Shears will take the route of resigning bus driver Gary Milliman. Hinkelman was presented a leadership award from the Idaho School Boards Association. In his principal’s report, Matt Elven noted they had 12 senior projects presented on January 12. Final senior project day is April 20. They are working on purchasing new baseball uniforms. The last ones purchased by the school were in 2007. In 2015 uniforms were purchased through private donations. They had to add a few more cameras to the bid to add cameras to the schools as the power outage on one of the snow days fried several of the old ones they had planned to continue using. They had 2 students attend Saturday school on Jan. 8 and 3 on Jan. 15. At this point no students have lost credit due to absences. Changes at the high school are using playlists for the bell schedule based on requests by staff and students. They are now taking a prize cart around the school to award students who receive the R3 cards. The cart was donated by Cottonwood Foods. Elven is getting the ASB officers more involved. He now has 2 ASB officers and representatives to greet students by name as they come in the door in morning. The daily bulletin is also read everyday by a rotating schedule of ASB officers and representatives. They have also set up a surplus flatscreen and entertainment center in the lunch room where they are setting up a weekly broadcasting schedule that includes previous athletic contests and postgame interview, PHS news, trivia days, cartoons and team building questions. Rehder reported they are continuing to hand out R3 cards at the Elementary. A ski day was scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21 for 4th through 8th graders at Cottonwood Butte. They are looking at setting up some field trips for students in the second semester. In his facility report he noted the water went down a the High School on Jan. 3. They were able to order parts and get the pump fixed by Jan. 10. They are still working on lining up a geologist to look into whether it would be feasible to drill another well at the high school for backup in case this kind of situation occurs again. They have started receiving camera supplies for installation. Supplies have been ordered for new water pipes for the Elementary School. They are looking at starting this over Spring Break as they didn’t arrive in time to start over Christmas break. The project will be completed during the summer. New water heaters for the Elementary are being looked into for the kitchen storage room. These will be added when the water lines are updated. Rehder said he reached out to Rhonda Wemhoff regarding expanding the gym foyer and adding a rest room at the high school. He will update the board when he gets more information. The carpet squares have been installed on the ramp leading from the cafeteria to the gym. They are looking at updating carpet tiles in several more locations at the building. They are looking at upgrading to LED lights at the Auxiliary gym. They are looking at doing this at the end of May or during the summer. In his superintendent report Rehder said he hopes we don’t see another week like the first week back from Christmas break when they had school closures due to weather on 3 of the 5 days. He checked into some ISBA workshops that board members might be interested in. He also said new boundary maps are being finalized. He will get them as a high resolution pdf file and have Ryan Hasselstrom print several out on the large printer at the high school. They are taking corrective action on the items that were flagged in the bus inspection. He updated the board on what Governor Little listed as goals for the state school budget in his state of the state address. We will see what the legislature does with those requests. The board adjourned to an executive session at 7:50 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be Monday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. |
