Lady Pirates finish 2nd at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates are gathering quite a collection of red State trophies as for the 7th time in the last 8 years, they brought home the second place trophy from the state tournament. They opened the tournament with a 65-28 win over Notus on Thursday, Feb. 17. On Friday, Feb. 18, they knocked off undefeated Butte County 56-37. Both of those games were at Columbia High School in Nampa and both were all-Pirates matchups. Maybe if Lapwai was also the Pirates, Prairie might have prevailed. In the championship game Saturday at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Prairie lost 37-63.
Vs. Notus
Prairie never trailed against District 3 champion Notus. Kristin Wemhoff opened the scoring with a 3 from the top of the key. Notus was able to tie the score at 6-6 but another 3 by Wemhoff put Prairie ahead for good. Notus answered with a free throw but a lay-up by Tara Schlader and a free throw by Wemhoff made it 12-7. Ali Rehder puts up a shot against Notus. She wound up as Prairie’s 2nd leading scorer at State. Also shown is Delanie Lockett.
After a Notus basket, Prairie reeled off 8 straight points. Wemhoff started the run with a steal and drive for a lay-up. Schlader tole the ball and that led to a pair of free throws by Delanie Lockett. Wemhoff added a layup and then a steal by Josie Remacle led to a putback by Remacle that made it 20-9.
Notus scored a pair of baskets but a lay-up by Remacle made it 22-13 at the quarter.
A putback each by Remacle and Laney Forsmann opened the second quarter scoring and put Prairie up 26-13.
Notus was able to trim the lead down to 8 at 29-21 but Prairie then ended the half with 7 straight points to take a 36-21 lead at the break. A free throw by Schlader was followed by a putback by Remacle. Ali Rehder then sank 2 free throws and Forsmann closed out the half with a basket.
Notus scored a free throw to open the second half scoring then didn’t score again until the 5:30 mark of the fourth quarter,  a stretch of over 10 minutes on the clock.
Meanwhile Prairie scored 19 straight points  to build their lead to 55-22. Rehder scored 7 points in the quarter while Wemhoff scored 6 and Schlader 2 as Prairie took a 51-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Isabella Walsh and Lockett each added a basket to finish off the 19-0 run.
After Notus finally broke their scoring drought, Lexi Schumacher sank a 3 and Forsmann and Olivia Klapprich each made a basket for a 62-24 lead. There is no mercy rule in state games so the game played out with a regular clock.
For the game Wemhoff led the scoring with 18 points. Forsmann and Rehder each scored 10 while Remacle scored 8, Schumacher 6, Schlader 5, Lockett 4 and Klapprich and Walsh 2 each.

Vs. Lapwai
Prairie has played in the state championship game 8 times in the last 9 years and in 7 of those championship games they played Lapwai, winning only the first one in 2014. Tara Schlader brings the ball across halfcourt against Lapwai. Also shown are Kristin Wemhoff (partially hidden) and Josie Remacle.
Unfortunately this one turned out the same way as the previous 5 championship matchups with Lapwai with the Wildcats winning.
Prairie was able to play with Lapwai early on as 2 baskets by Lockett, a putback by Schlader and a free throw by Remacle had the score tied at 7-7. Lapwai then took control of the game with a 0-12 run as Prairie went scoreless for nearly 4 minutes as Lapwai took a 7-18 lead and never looked back.
Wemhoff finally broke the drought with a drive to the hoop but Lapwai answered with a 3-pointer by Lauren Gould. Gould and Jordan McCormack-Marks kept coming up with baskets for Lapwai that killed any momentum the Pirates might have.
Rehder came off the bench to score 5 points in the second quarter on a 3-pointer and a basket that helped the Pirates tread water in the quarter as they were outscored just 11-14 as Lapwai took a  20-35 halftime lead.
The third quarter was a disaster for the Pirates as they made just 1 of 18 shots and that basket by Lockett came with 2:33 left in the period. By that time Lapwai had taken a 28-point lead at 20-48.
Lapwai led 22-54 after 3 quarters.
Lapwai played physical defense, bumping Wemhoff off stride on her drives to the hoop and collapsing on Schlader whenever she got the ball inside.
Schlader finally broke loose in the fourth quarter when she scored 8 of her 10 points. Lockett also scored 10 points with Rehder, keeping up her inspired play in the state tournament, adding 8 points. Wemhoff scored 4, Remacle 3 and Forsmann 2.
Prairie had a 45-40 edge on the boards but that was built with a 15-9 fourth quarter advantage when the game was already decided.
Wemhoff led the Pirates with 12 rebounds while Schlader had 11 and Remacle had 7.
Wemhoff and Lockett each had 3 steals while Schlader and Lockett each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 55 from the field, 27%, and 5 for 17 at the line, 29%. Lapwai was 26 for 62 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
Prairie had 24 turnovers while Lapwai had 15.
McCormack-Marks scored 19 to lead Lapwai while Gould scored 15.
Prairie ends their season with a 20-5 record. They are now 9-13 in 22 state championship games. Lapwai is now 11-4 in 15 state championship games with 3 of those 4 losses to Prairie and the other to C.V.
