Lady Pirates sweep Genesee
In a wild doubleheader against Genesee, the Prairie Lady Pirates pulled out a pair of 1-run wins in softball action at Cottonwood Monday, April 18. They came from behind to win the opener 9-8 then held off a Genesee rally to win the second game 8-7.
A scheduled doubleheader against Troy on Saturday, April 16, was postponed due to weather. The games have been rescheduled for Monday, April 25 with the first game to start at 4 p.m. at Cottonwood.
Prairie was the visiting team in the opening game and scored first. Delanie Lockett was hit by a pitch leading off. She stole second and went to third on Mackenzie Key’s single to left. After a couple of outs Josie Remacle hit the ball to the shortstop who bobbled the ball long enough for Remacle to reach first as Lockett scored from third.
Genesee came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and added 3 more in the second inning to take a 1-5 lead. In the first inning it was 3 singles and 2 walks that led to the runs. In the second inning 2 singles and an error led to the 3 runs.
Prairie scored twice in the third as Tara Schlader led off with a single to left. She stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Remacle walked. Gracie Farr the beat out an infield hit as Schlader scored. After a second out, Kaylie Lockett reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases. Ember Martin then worked a walk to score Remacle to make it 3-5.
Neither team scored in the fourth. In the fifth Remacle walked to lead off the inning and stole second. Farr struck out on a pitch in the dirt but reached first when the catcher was more worried about keeping Remacle from advancing. After an out, Kaylie Lockett hit a grounder to second that scored Remacle and made it 4-5.
Genesee then scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth on 2 walks and 2 singles to push their lead to 4-8.
With the 90 minute time limit looming, the sixth was going to be the final inning. Delanie Lockett led off the inning with a single up the middle. Key followed with a triple to the fence in right center to score Lockett. Schlader then also hit a triple to right center to score Key. Schlader scored on a wild pitch to pull the Pirates within 1 at 7-8. Riley Enneking was hit by a pitch and then was able to advance 2 bases on a wild pitch. On ball 4 to Remacle the ball got away, allowing Enneking to score the tying run. Remacle went to second on a groundout by Farr. Then things got wild. Remacle stole third and then rounded the bag too far as the third baseman had to back up to take the throw from the catcher. Remacle was able to get into a rundown and then on the second throw to the catcher, the catcher came out too far from home plate and Remacle was able to slip past her and score the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the sixth pitcher Key got a fly ball out then gave up a double with the hitter advancing to third on a bobble in the outfield. That put the tying run on third with just 1 out. Catcher Remacle was then able to pick the runner off third. After a walk, the next Genesee batter hit a popup toward second base. Shortstop Delanie Lockett and second baseman Martin converged on the play and as they collided, Martin was able to glove the ball and held on as she fell to the ground for the final out.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game. Key and Schlader each had a triple and a single and an RBI. Remacle and Farr each had an RBI single and Delanie Lockett had a single. Picking up an RBI each were Kaylie Lockett and Martin.
Key pitched all 6 innings allowing 8 runs on 9 hits with 6 walks and 1 strikeout.

In the second game coach Jeff Martin went with Schlader in the circle but Schlader hit one batter and walked 2 to load the bases and got only 1 out. Key went back to the circle for the fifth batter and got out of the inning on a pair of ground ball outs with no one scoring.
In the bottom of the first Prairie continued the hitting they had in the final inning of the first game. After an out Key was hit by a pitch and stole second. Schlader then singled to right center to score key and stole second. Enneking singled to left to score Schlader. Enneking went to second on the throw home. Remacle then singled up the middle to score Enneking. Amelia Uhlenkott singled to send Remacle to third. Remacle then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
Genesee scored a run in the second on a single and a double to cut the lead to 4-1.
Prairie score 3 in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 7-1. Martin led off with a double to left and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Lexi Schumacher’s groundout to second. After a second out Key doubled to the fence in right. Schlader followed with a single to left to score Key. Schlader stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball which was ball four to Enneking.
Genesee scored 2 in the third. Their leadoff hitter tripled to left and scored on the next hitter’s single. That hitter stole second and went to third on a passed ball. She then scored on a groundout to cut the lead to 7-3.
Prairie added a run in the bottom of the inning. Kaylie Lockett led off with a single to left. She went to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. She scored on Schumacher’s groundout to first to make it 8-3.
Genesee scored a run in the fourth on a 1-out triple and then a groundout to short. 2 singles and a walk loaded the bases but Key got out of the inning with Laney Forsmann coming in to catch a sinking liner to center.
Prairie put two runners on in the bottom of the fourth but couldn’t score. Remacle singled and Uhlenkott was hit by a pitch.
With the time limit looming, the fifth was going to be the final inning.
Key walked the first two Genesee batters then came out of the game with numbness in her arm. Schumacher took over in the circle and walked the first batter she faced to load the bases. A grounder to short forced the runner there while a run scored. Another walk reloaded the bases. A single brought in 2 more runs to cut the lead to 8-7. On the play Prairie was able to put out the runner from first at third base on a relay from Tamden Pecarovich in left to Delanie Lockett at short to Kaylie Lockett at third. Schumacher then ended the game as she induced a grounder to short for the final out.
Prairie had 11 hits in the game led by Remacle who had 3 singles and an RBI. Schlader had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Key and Martin each had a double. Enneking had an RBI single. Delanie Lockett, Kaylie Lockett and Uhlenkott each had a single. Schumacher had 2 RBI.
Schlader pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing 2 walks and 1 hit batsman. Key pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 1 strikeout and picked up the win. Schumacher pitched 1 inning allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 2 walks.
Prairie is now 2-1 in league play and 3-2 overall.
