Pirates rally late for win
In
what turned out to be their final regular season game, the Prairie
Pirates edged Clearwater Valley with a 2-run bottom of the seventh to
win 4-3 at Kooskia Wednesday, May 4. The game was moved to Kooskia due to field conditions at Cottonwood. The game against Lapwai was cancelled due to weather and wasn’t made up as it did not affect seeding for District. The game was a pitcher’s duel between Prairie’s Noah Behler and C.V.’s Landon Schlieper. Prairie got the Schlieper for a run in the third inning and held that lead until the 6th when C.V. got to Behler for 3 runs. Prairie answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 1 run. After giving up the second run, Schlieper was pulled with Ridge Shown coming in to pitch. Shown got out of the inning with C.V. still ahead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates plated 2 runs off of Shown to walk off the win. Cody Kaschmitter led off the in with a single and scored when his brother Chase Kaschmitter doubled. Colton McElroy reached on a fielder’s choice as Chase Kaschmitter was put out. Eli Hinds singled with McElroy advancing to third. Behler then hit a deep fly ball for a sacrifice fly that scored McElroy with the game-winning run. Behler pitched all 7 innings and needed just 71 pitches as he pitched to contact with the defense playing errorless ball behind him. He gave up 3 runs on just 5 hits. The Pirates had 9 hits in the game led by Cody Kaschmitter who had 3 singles. Hinds and Behler each had 2 singles. Chase Kaschmitter had a double and Colton McElroy had a single. The Pirates finish the regular season with a record of 6-6 in league and 9-10 overall. They are the #5 seed into District and were to play at Kendrick Tuesday, May 10 in an elimination game. If they won Tuesday, they would clinch a trip to State. District at Orofino is all about seeding the teams into State. Prairie would open against #1 seeded Genesee at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12. With a win they would play for the District Championship at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 13. With a loss they would play for the #3 and #4 seed into state at 3 p.m. Friday.
