City Crew, Fire Department help mitigate possible flooding
The Cottonwood Police Department had
been monitoring the creek all day and night Saturday, May 7. It
rapidly rose from 8 PM through 1 AM, when we had the Cottonwood Fire
Department paged out to assist with sand bags. CPD Volunteer Chanse Shuffield and Cottonwood Maintenance employee Mac Hankins came out about 10 PM and began placing the concrete "Jersey Barriers" near Lewiston x Front Street. Pat Enneking and Dallas Paul came out and assisted with moving the trailers and sand bags to get everything set closer for the fire department, who physically placed the bags. Ultimately, the creek did not come over the headwall on Lewiston Street! The water literally began to cross the sidewalk while we were placing sandbags, then began to recede. Due to all the previous work done by the City in upgrades to the culvert system, it was able to take all the water that came down. However, we were one more rain from having water running down the street. Cottonwood Maintenance Crews then went back on Monday and picked up all the sandbags and barriers ! Police Chief Terry Cochran would like to express his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the Cottonwood City Maintenance Department and the Cottonwood Fire Department!! Through years of planning and preparation, a few 'practice runs' in the past, and their willingness to jump in and help, had the creek surged out of the banks as many surrounding us had, everyone would have been protected. these guys jumped out of bed in the middle of the night to willingly help out neighbors and businesses, may of which didn't even know these guys were doing it. Next time ya see one of them, let them know you appreciate their efforts!! They deserve it. Cottonwood Creek at the grate where it goes under Lewiston Street as it started to rise early in the evening. The Creek several hours later as it threatened to overflow. You can bareluy see the top portion of the grate. The Creek after it flows out from under Riener's Grocery. According to Gary Riener, when it hits that bridge, it is flooding downtown.
