Pirates hold off Loggers
People turned out to watch a football game last Friday, Sept. 9 at Cottonwood but it turned out they were watching a track meet as the Prairie Pirates and Potlatch Loggers combined for over 1100 yards of offense in a 56-52 win by the Pirates. Potlatch received the opening kickoff and needed just 3 plays to score as Wyatt Johnson caught a short pass from quarterback Jack Clark and went 59 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Potlatch led 0-6 less than a minute into the game. Prairie responded with a more methodical drive as they needed 11 plays to cover 84 yards. There were 9 running plays and 2 incomplete passes. Jake Quintal had the biggest gainer of 19 yards and added a 7 yard run while Trenton Lorentz had runs of 11, 8, 4 and 13 yards with the last run scoring the touchdown. Prairie also failed on the 2-pointer to leave the score tied at 6-6. A rarity happened as Potlatch’s next possession as they were forced to punt with Prairie taking over at the Loggers 46 yard line after a 22 yard punt. Colton McElroy completed a pass to Ben Elven but it got called back for holding. Prairie then stuck to the ground with Lorentz going 16 yards around right end on third and 11 to moved the ball to the 31. Quintal picked up 5 yards on first down the McElroy covered the final 26 on an option run for the touchdown. Again the 2-point try was stopped short as Prairie took a 12-6 lead. Potlatch took over after a penalty on the kickoff at their own 37. Two plays later Clark connected with Johnson again, this time for 62 yard scoring play. That tied the score at 12-12 as the 2-point try failed. Prairie didn’t take long to retake the lead as McElroy took the kickoff at the Prairie 22 and ran it all the way back for a 78 yard kickoff return and an 18-12 lead as the 2 point try failed. Potlatch turned the ball over on downs at the Prairie 46 on their next possession but got it right back on an interception that was returned 34 yards to the Prairie 20 before Quintal made the saving tackled. Two plays later Clark and Johnson hooked up for 24 yards to the Prairie 1. Clark took the ball in on the next play to again tie the game. Dylan Uhlenkott took the short kickoff and returned it 20 yards to the Potlatch 48. After a 6 yard gain each by Lorentz and McElroy, Lorentz took the ball over the right side for 36 yards and a Pirate touchdown. The Pirates finally converted a 2-point try as Eli Hinds carried the ball in for the 2-pointer to make it 26-18 at the end of the first quarter. Potlatch came back with a 6 play drive for their fourth touchdown with Johnson covering the final 32 yards on a run to the left. Prairie held on to the lead as the defense stopped the Loggers’ 2-point try. Prairie turned the ball over on downs at their own 38 after their next possession but got the ball right back when Uhlenkott recovered a Potlatch fumble at the Prairie 35. Prairie was forced to punt and Potlatch then was able to retake the lead when Clark connected with Waylan Marshall for a 63 yard touchdown pass. Potlatch then converted their first 2-point try of the game to make it 26-32 with 6:05 left in the half. Prairie answered back with a 6 play, 70 yard scoring drive. Lorentz had a 30 yard run in the drive and Quintal wound up covering the final 17 yards on a run up the middle for the touchdown. Prairie’s 2-point try was stopped as the Pirates tied the score at 32-32. The Pirates forced a Potlatch punt and took over at their own 15. The Pirates had a run of 11 yards by Lorentz followed by a 20 yard gain by McElroy. Prairie then got assessed 7 yards instead of the usual 5 on a penalty but followed with a big gain by McElroy. A bunch of that gain was called back on an illegal block. McElroy then passed for 15 yards to Lorentz to set up third and 3rd and 6 at the 50. McElroy then passed downfield to Lorentz. Lorentz caught the ball at about the 30 and with the help of downfield blocking by his teammates was able to take the ball into the end zone. McElroy ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 40-32 lead at halftime. Prairie received the second half kickoff as McElroy returned the ball 18 yards to the Prairie 36. The Pirates had to overcome a holding penalty that had them facing third and 17. McElroy completed a pass for 16 yards to Lorentz and then ran a sneak for 3 yards on 4th down to give Prairie a first down. A false start penalty pushed them back to the Prairie 46. McElroy then passed downfield to Lorentz. It looked like the Potlatch defender was in position to make an interception but Lorentz grabbed the ball, reaching over the defender’s head, right out of his hands. Lorentz then turned and ran into the end zone. Levi Gehring ran in the 2-point to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 48-32. Potlatch came right back with a touchdown of their own, needing 4 plays to cover 57 yards. They didn’t add the 2-pointer but were able to cut the margin to 10 at 48-38. Prairie was able to moved the ball down to the Potlatch 22 before a holding penalty set them back and led them doming up short on 4th down at that point. Potlatch took over and needed just 1 play to score as Johnson ran a wingback reverse and then cut up the middle for 78 yards. The Loggers added the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 2 at 48-46 with 4:25 left in the third quarter. The defenses started having more success the rest of the game as Prairie was forced to punt but Potlatch turned the ball over on downs. Prairie took over on their own 42. Hinds had a 41 yard run over the left side that set the Pirates up on the Potlatch 3. 2 plays later McElroy went in for the score from the 1. Hinds ran in the 2-point try to make it 56-46 as the third quarter ended. Potlatch moved from their own 35 to midfield before turning the ball over on downs at their own 48. Prairie was unable to moved the ball and turned the ball back to Potlatch on downs. This time Potlatch moved the ball downfield completing 4 of 7 passes with Johnson catching a pass from Clark for the final 20 yards and a touchdown. Potlatch failed on the 2-point try leaving Prairie with a 56-52 lead with 4:35 left. Prairie tried to move the ball but on third and 7, and pitchout from McElroy to Lorentz didn’t connect and Potlatch recovered the fumble at the Prairie 47. On first down McElroy stopped Clark for no gain on a run. On second down McElroy deflected a Potlatch pass. The third down pass went long and on fourth down Lorentz got a pass rush going and hit Clark just as he was trying to throw leading to the pass coming up way short. Prairie picked up a first down at the 42 then Lorentz rushed for 14 yards to the 28 for another first down. Quintal picked up 9 yards up the middle and that got the clock down far enough that McElroy was able to drop to a knee to run out the clock. Each team scored 8 touchdowns in the game but Prairie was able to convert four 2-point conversions while Potlatch converted just 2. Lorentz had 373 of Prairie’s 560 yards of total offense. He had 214 yards rushing on 25 attempts and caught 7 passes for 146 yards. He scored 2 touchdowns rushing and 2 pass receiving. Prairie had 395 yards rushing on 57 attempts. Hinds gained 66 yards on 7 carries. McElroy had 65 yards on 16 carries and Quintal had 50 yards on 9 carries. McElroy completed 10 of 18 passes with 1 interception for 165 yards. Elven had 2 catches for 15 yards and Quintal had 1 for 4 yards. Quintal led the defense with 8.5 tackles. McElroy had 6.5 tackles. Carter Shears had 4 tackles. Shane Hanson had 3.5 tackles.
