Lady Pirates lose twice The Prairie Lady Pirates lost a pair of league matches last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, they lost a home match in 3 games to Potlatch, 19-25, 21-25, 23-25. On Thursday, Sept. 8 they traveled to Genesee and lost in 4 games 16-25, 11-25, 26-24, 18-25. Vs. Potlatch The Lady Pirates were swept twice by Potlatch last year and it started that way again. In the opening game Potlatch took the lead with a 5-0 run that turned a 2-2 tie into a 2-7 deficit for Prairie. Potlatch never trailed again the rest of the opening game. Prairie had a nice run late in the game when Riley Enneking went back to serve after a block by Alli Geis. Enneking served 4 straight aces to cut the deficit to 18-21. However Prairie scored just 1 more point in the game. Potlatch bricked a served to start the second game and Lexi Schumacher followed with an ace for a 2-0 lead. Prairie still led 3-2 when Potlatch scored 6 straight to take the lead for good. Prairie managed to cut the deficit to just 2 at 9-11 after 2 aces by Geis and rallied later from a 13-20 deficit to pull within 21-24 on a kill by Kylie Schumacher. However Potlatch then scored the game winning point. Lexi Schumacher served Prairie to a 3-0 lead in the third game with an ace and 2 kills by Tara Schlader. Potlatch came back for a 3-4 lead but Prairie took back the lead at 5-4 and also led at 9-8 and one final time at 21-20. Potlatch scored a sideout kill to tie the game at 21 and then scored 3 more points to get to match point. A kill by Schlader and an ace by Schumacher got them back within 1 at 23-24 before Potlatch scored a kill for the match-winner. Schlader had 13 kills, 4 assists and 2 aces in the match. Geis had 6 kills, including 2 blocks, and 2 aces. Julia Rehder had 5 kills, 1 assist and 3 aces. Kylie Schumacher, in her first varsity action, had 3 kills, including a block. Lexi Schumacher had 3 kills, 19 assists and 4 aces. Kristin Wemhoff had 2 kills, 1 assist and 1 ace. Taylor Riener had 1 kill. Enneking had 3 assists and 7 aces. Prairie managed to win the JV match after losing the first game, 18-25, 25-16, 15-9. Prairie never led in the first game as Potlatch took a 0-3 lead and led by as many as 8 points on their way to a 7 point win. In the second game Prairie fell behind 0-4 but rallied to take their first lead of the night after a 4-point serving run by Sydney Shears that featured 2 aces and a kill each by Kylie Schumacher and TamdenPecarovich. That put Prairie on top 9-6. Potlatch took back the lead at 10-11 but Prairie took the lead for good on a kill be Hailey Hanson that made it 13-12. Pecarovich followed with 3 service points including an ace plus a kill each by Sierra Oliver and Hanson. After that it was mostly sideouts until a tip by Shears sent Hanson to the service line for 4 straight points. She had 3 aces and Shears added another kill. After a sideout, Aubree Rehder scored a sideout kill and Shears served an ace to even the match at a game each. Pecarovich served an ace to start the decisive third game and Ember Martin followed with a kill. Although the game stayed close until late, Prairie never trailed. They broke the game open when Hanson scored a kill to send Martin to the service line at 11-7. After 3 straight aces Prairie was at match point. Potlatch fought off match point twice before missing a serve to give Prairie the match. At Genesee In the first game at Genesee, Prairie led just once, at 1-0 after a kill by Schlader for a sideout.Genesee scored the next 5 straight points. Prairie fought back within 1 at 6-7 on an ace by Enneking and then tied it at 8-8 on an ace by Rehder. Genesee then took back the lead and steadily built on it until winning by 9. Prairie was blown out in the second game as they fell behind 0-2, 1-7 and 2-11 and never really got back into the game as Genesee went on to win by 14. In the third game they fell behind 0-2 then took their second lead of the night with 4 straight service points by Lexi Schumacher. Schlader scored the sideout kill and added 2 kills and a block before Schumacher served an ace for a 5-2 lead. Genesee came back to tie it at 8-8 before bricking a serve to put Prairie back on top. A kill and a block by Geis made it 11-8. Genesee tied it again at 11 but a kill by Schlader put Prairie back on top. Prairie then held the lead until Genesee took back the lead at 22-23 on a kill. A kill by Geis tied it and a dig for a kill by Wemhoff got Prairie to game point. Genesee tied it but Schlader scored a kill to get Prairie back to game point and Kylie Schumacher scored the game-winning point on a block. Prairie was unable to take any of that momentum into the final game as they fell behind 0-5. They got back within 2 at 6-8 but could never even tie the score much less take the lead. After falling behind by as many as 6 they got back within 3 at 17-20 on a kill by Geis but managed to score just one more point as Genesee won the match. Schlader had 18 kills, including 1 block, plus and assist and an ace. Kylie Schumacher had 10 kills including 2 blocks. Geis had 10 kills including 3 blocks. Rehder had 8 kills, 1 assist and 2 aces. Wemhoff had 3 kills, 2 assists and 4 aces. Lexi Schumacher had 1 kill, 35 assists and 2 aces. Enneking had 1 kill, 3 assists and 1 ace. Kaylie Lockett, in her first varsity action, had a kill. Prairie is now 1-3 in league play and 2-3 in best 3 of 5 matches. In the JV match Prairie lost 9-25, 20-25 and salvaged the third game 15-10. In a lopsided opening game Prairie scored first on a dig kill by Oliver then gave up 11 straight points. They trailed 2-15 and 3-18 and wound up losing by 16. In the second game Prairie took a 4-1 lead as Pecarovich and Ashlyn North each served an ace and Shears and Rehder each added a kill. Prairie pretty much held on to the lead until Genesee tied it at 8-8 and then outscored Prairie 3-9 to take an 11-17 lead. Prairie was able to get back within 3 at 20-23 but missed a serve and Genesee served the match winner. If the number of available players isn’t an issue, both teams usually play a third JV game regardless of what happened in the first two games. That gave Prairie a chance to salvage a game. Prairie led 8-4 after 3 service points by Shears that included an ace and a kill each by Pecarovich and Ellie Nuxoll. Genesee cut the lead to 1 but a dig kill by Oliver and an ace by Rehder pushed the lead back to 3. At 12-10 Genesee bricked a served and North was able to serve 2 aces to give Prairie the 15-10 win. The C team won their match 14-25, 25-23, 16-14. Riley Enneking serves the ball against Potlatch. Julia Rehder digs a serve at Genesee. At right is Kristin Wemhoff.
