Pirates lose in final seconds
In a game with state playoff implications the Prairie Pirates were edged by the Clearwater Valley Rams 30-34 at Kooskia Friday, Oct. 14. Shane Hanson crosses the goal line with Prairie’s first touchdown of the game.
C.V. was looking to clinch a berth in the state playoffs while Prairie was looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. With the loss it would appear that Prairie has to depend on receiving an at-large berth as only the top 3 league finishers are guaranteed a berth and if Lapwai beats Genesee this week, they would have the tiebreaker in head to head competition if Prairie beats Logos and ties the Wildcats for third.
It looked like Prairie might pull off the win at C.V. when they took the lead at 30-28 in the third quarter. The defense was able to stop C.V. on the Rams’ next 2 possessions but the Rams were able to put together a final drive and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 19.7 seconds left in the game.
To get to that point Prairie had to come from behind a couple of times in a back and forth game. C.V. received the opening kickoff and marched down the field to score the game’s first points on a 1 yard run by quarterback Louie Fabbi.
Prairie came right back. Trenton Lorentz was back after missing 3 games following an appendectomy and Colton McElroy was back at quarterback after missing last week’s game due to illness.
Prairie picked up their initial first down of the game thanks to an offsides penalty on C.V. and on the next play, a targeting penalty moved the ball to the C.V. 28.
Prairie faced fourth and 5 at the C.V. 23 when McElroy threw his first pass of the game. He found tight end Shane Hanson wide open inside the 10 for a 23 yards scoring play. Prairie then took their first lead of the game when Eli Hinds passed to Hanson for the 2-point conversion that made it 8-6.
The lead didn’t last long though as C.V. got a 77 yard touchdown run from Bass Myers. Fabbi ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-14.
On Prairie’s next possession the Pirates faced fourth and 8 at their own 47 when Hinds connected with Hanson for a 43 yard gain on a halfback option pass that set up first and goal at the 10. McElroy ran the ball into the end zone on the next play to tie the game. McElroy then ran in the 2-pointer to put Prairie back on top at 16-14 early in the second quarter.
C.V. answered back with a 10 play, 57 yard drive where they had to overcome a couple of holding penalties to retake the lead. Fabbi scored on a 5 yard run and Myers added the 2-pointer to put C.V. back on top at 16-22.
Prairie came right back with an 11-play, 62 yard drive where they also had to overcome a holding penalty. Big plays in the drive were a 23 yard gain by Hinds on a third and 1 and a 15 yard gain on fourth and 5 by Hinds that set up first and goal at the 10. 3 plays later, McElroy scored from 3 yards out to tie the game. C.V. stopped the 2-point try leaving the score tied at 22 with 38 seconds left in the first half.
Prairie was stopped on their first possession of the second half after McElroy was sacked for an 11 yard loss that led to a turnover on downs at the Prairie 34.
C.V. got hit with 2 penalties worth 25 yards but still managed to score the go-ahead touchdown when Fabbi passed toa wide open Myers for a 38 yard touchdown play. Prairie stopped the 2-point try leaving the Rams with a 22-28 lead.
Prairie started from their own 45 on the ensuing possession and moved into C.V. territory on a 10 yard gain by Lorentz that had 15 yards added on for a helmet to helmet penalty that put the ball on the C.V. 28. Two penalties set the Pirates back to the 39.
Two plays later McElroy connected with Hinds on a slant pattern that Hinds took 38 yards for a tying touchdown. McElroy ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 30-28 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
A sack of Fabbi on third down for a 9 yard loss by Dylan Uhlenkott and Hanson forced C.V. to punt from their own 20 with Prairie taking over at their own 45.
The Pirates moved the ball down to the C.V. 24 before the drive stalled and they turned the ball over on downs.
C.V. was able to moved to the Prairie 42 thanks in part to a 15 yard penalty on the Pirates. Fabbi was hurt on the play and Carson Schilling took over at quarterback for a couple of plays. McElroy intercepted Schilling’s only pass attempt at the Prairie 14 and returned it to the 22. A late hit penalty moved the ball out to the 37.
Prairie got hit with a 15 yard penalty of their own and were forced to punt from their own 18 with C.V. taking over at the Prairie 38.
The Rams converted a fourth down and 13 play from the Prairie 42 when Fabbi, who was back in at quarterback, connected with Schilling for 14 yards. A scramble by Fabbi for 19 yards moved the ball down to the Prairie 12. Two plays later Fabbi found Schilling open in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 19.7 seconds to play. Noah Behler sacked Fabbi on the 2-point try leaving the score at 30-34.
Prairie tried a lateral on the kickoff return with Hinds throwing across the field to McElroy who took the ball 25 yards to the 50.
Prairie then tried a couple of long passes from Hinds to Lorentz who got behind the defender both times but was unable to get his hands on the pass either time.
Prairie wound up with 244 yards of offense to 365 for C.V.
The Pirates had 140 yards rushing on 41 attempts led by Hinds who had 80 yards on 14 carries. Lorentz, still not 100%, had 39 yards on 13 carries.
McElroy completed 2 of 5 pass attempts for 61 yards while Hinds was 1 for 3 for 43 yards. Hanson caught 2 for 66 yards and a touchdown while Hinds caught 1 for 38 yards and a touchdown.
On defense Hinds led the team with 6 tackles. McElroy had 5 tackles and an interception. Uhlenkott and Lorentz also had 5 tackles each. Behler had 3 tackles. Hanson had 2 tackles and Blake Bunce and Carter Shears each had 1 tackle. Behler had 1 sack and Uhlenkott and Hanson each had half a sack.
C.V. had 251 yards rushing on 36 attempts led by Myers with 114 on 14 carries and Fabbi with 98 yards on 16 carries.
Fabbi completed 6 of 11 passes for 114 yards. Myers was 0 for 1 and Schilling was 0 for 1 with an interception.
Prairie is now 3-4 on the season and 3-3 in league play. They play Logos this Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood. This will also be Senior Night. Prairie needs a win to have any hope of a state playoff berth.

Trenton Lorentz steps out of a would be tackle on a run at C.V. Also shown are Noah Behler, Ben Elven and Shane Hanson. Lorentz played his first game after missing the last 3 due to an appendectomy. Although his numbers weren’t quite up to his earlier standards, his being there seemed to inspire his teammates to play better than they had the last two weeks.
