| From the Church on the Hill by D. Eric Williams Pastor, Cottonwood Community Church pastor@CottCommChurch.com In 1789 President George Washington made the following declaration (the first official presidential proclamation ever issued in the United States): Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. There is no ambiguity here. President Washington and both houses of Congress readily acknowledged Almighty God was the Author of their every blessing. Not only did they enjoin the citizens of the United States to give thanks to God and to look to Him with submissive and obedient hearts; they bid the nations of the world to do likewise. Every country has an essential religious character. Some are Moslem, some are Hindu some are Christian and so on. To concede a nation's religious character is not to imply its civil government is beholden to the ecclesiastics. In some lands they are. But here in the USA the original intent was for the Church and State to remain separate and sovereign in their own ambits under the authority of God. We hear a lot about the separation of Church and state these days. Yet this isn't because the Christian Church is seeking to usurp the proper authority of the State. Instead, Godless Humanism (GH), has established itself as the official State religion and jealously guards its position of power while cloaking its cause in the language of liberty. GH is portrayed as tolerant and freedom loving while the traditional Christianity of our forefathers is painted as dark, dangerous and oppressive. The opposite is true as any student of history would know. Of course there aren't too many students of history now-a-days. This isn't to say the Christian Church is without spot or blemish. Certainly the Bride has wandered away from the Bridegroom from time to time. Nevertheless, the basic tenets of the Church do not condone the use of force to advance the kingdom of God. And force is not limited to military or police action; use of force includes simply the threat of force against those who don't comply. That is exactly the situation we have today in regards to GH. Having captured the State apparatus, GH is able to use the threat of force to advance its version of the kingdom. We have much to be thankful for this holiday season. According to the Bible we should even be thankful for the current state of affairs in our own nation. Like George Washington and his peers we must recognize the hand of God in all things. Hence we can be thankful God in His sovereignty and wisdom is using even the anti-God actions of GH to bring His will to pass. |
