There are 24 players turned out for the Prairie High School boys basketball team this season. They will work with two new coaches. The new head coach is Tim Scheffler who has previously coached as an assistant girls coach and as a junior high boys coach for Prairie. Pat Holthaus, a fixture on the sidelines for the Pirates, also returns as an assistant coach. The new assistant coach is former boys head coach Teel Bruner who returns to the program after resigning after his son Jake’s senior season in 2015-16. Returning starters for the Pirates are senior Shane Hanson and junior Lee Forsmann. Also returning from last year’s varsity squad are senior Morgan Poxleitner, juniors Noah Behler and Trenton Lorentz and sophomore Matt Wemhoff. Other full-time varsity players are junior Bennie Elven and freshman Riley Shears. Serving as swing players are senior Ryan Wemhoff, sophomores Briggs Rambo and Logan Weber and freshmen Levi Gehring and Phil Schwartz. Full-time JV players are sophomores Kaden Duclos, Close Duclos, Collin Ray and Drake Cronan and freshmen Jackson Enneking, Benny Secrest, Nate Forsmann, Levi McElroy, Chris Schumacher, Max Rehder and Chase VonBargen. The Pirates are a young squad with only 2 returning players who started last season. They will have good size with a pair of 6’5” posts in Lee Forsmann and Hanson and the 6’9” Poxleitner. The Prairie varsity gets into action this Thursday, Dec. 1, against Kendrick and then will participate in the Idaho County Shootout on Friday against Grangeville. Both games are at Cottonwood.
