The Prairie Pirates were missing a couple of starters due to illness and lost a league matchup to Kamiah 26-55 at Cottonwood Tuesday, Dec. 13. They were also to play at Potlatch on Friday, Dec. 16, but that game was cancelled due to more illnesses on the team. Shane Wemhoff and Trenton Lorentz were both missing due to illness with Bennie Elven and Noah Behler replacing them in the starting lineup. Prairie took a quick lead in the game when Matt Wemhoff sank a 3-pointer from the corner off a feed from Elven. Kamiah answered with 5 straight points to take their first lead but Lee Forsmann stole the ball and drove the length of the court for a lay-up to tie the game at 5-5. After a Kamiah free throw, Behler scored off a feed from Wemhoff to give Prairie a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kamiah took the lead for good on a basket to start the second quarter. Forsmann then picked up his third foul and sat the rest of the half as Kamiah dominated the rest of the quarter. Kamiah had a 0-10 run to start the quarter before Behler scored with 4:07 left. Kamiah then scored 5 straight for a 9-21 lead. Prairie put a bit of a rally together as Riley Shears made a free throw, Levi Gehring scored after a steal and another steal by Gehring led to a basket by Elven that cut the deficit to 14-21. Kamiah then closed out the half with a pair of baskets to take a 14-25 lead at the break. The Kubs then scored the first 9 points of the third quarter to take a 14-34 lead before Phil Schwartz connected on a 3-pointer with 3:30 left. Kamiah then scored another 5 straight before Forsmann scored his first points since the first quarter. Forsmann added another basket a minute later but Prairie trailed 21-43 after 3 quarters. Kamiah scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter before Behler scored on a putback. Schwartz added a basket and Logan Weber a free throw for Prairie’s final points in a 29 point loss. Forsmann and Behler each scored 6 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Schwartz added 5 with Wemhoff scoring 3. Elven and Gehring scored 2 each and Shears and Weber scored 1 each. Kamiah had a 16-34 advantage on the boards. Behler led the Pirates with 4 rebounds. Gehring and Forsmann each had 2 steals and Wemhoff had 3 assists. Prairie was 11 for 36 from the field, 31%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 29%. Kamiah was 23 for 45 from the field, 51%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Prairie is now 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in league play. Kamiah won the JV game thanks to a big fourth quarter, 27-33. Kamiah scored first in the game with a free throw but Prairie took their first lead on a 3-pointer by Phil Schwartz. Kamiah then scored 5 straight points before Logan Weber broke the run with a tip-in at the buzzer that made it 5-6 at the end of the first quarter. Nate Forsmann scored a pair of baskets to give Prairie a 9-6 lead in the second quarter. After a Kamiah basket, Forsmann scored again to make it 11-8. Kamiah then scored to cut the lead to 11-10 at the half. Forsmann opened the second half scoring then Kamiah got a pair of 3-points to retake the lead. Forsmann scored again to cut the lead to 1 but another 3 gave Kamiah a 15-19 lead. Kaden Duclos scored on a putback and was fouled. He completed the 3-point play to make it 18-19 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Kamiah put in a swing player that later started in the varsity game. He scored 7 points and had 7 rebounds in the fourth quarter and contributed hugely to their win. Forsmann sank a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter scoring and put Prairie into the lead. After Kamiah’s Jack Engledow made his fourth straight 3-pointer (he had scored all 9 of their third quarter points on 3’s), Briggs Rambo tied the game with a free throw. That’s when the varsity starter helped Kamiah take control as he scored 5 of Kamiah’s next 7 points as the Kubs took a 22-29 lead. Prairie got no closer than 5, at 26-31, the rest of the way. Forsmann wound up with 13 points and 7 rebounds to lead the JV’s in scoring. Duclos, Schwartz, Weber and Rambo each scored 3 and Ben Secrest scored 2. Kamiah had a 30-31 edge on the boards. Forsmann and Duclos each had 2 steals and Levi Gehring had 3 assists. The JV’s were 10 for 29 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 18 at the line, 28%.
