The Prairie Pirates participated in the Avista Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament last Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 27-29, and lost 3 games to finish 8th in the tournament. They opened with a 40-55 loss to eventual runner-up Shadle Park of Spokane on Tuesday. On Wednesday they lost 33-46 to Pendleton. Both of those games were played at the LCSC Activity Center. On Thursday, Dec. 29, they lost to Kellogg 30-65 in the 7th place game at Clarkston High School. The games at LCSC were played with a 30 second shot clock, while the game a Clarkston was played without a shot clock, apparently because no one was available to run it. Vs. Park the Pirates started well and played a solid first half. Lee
Forsmann gave Prairie a quick lead with a 3-pointer 25 seconds into the
game.After a Shadle Park score, Trenton Lorentz scored from the baseline to make it 5-2. After Shadle Park tied it with a 3, Forsmann put Prairie back on top with 2 free throws and Noah Behler banked in a shot to make it 9-5. A basket by Lorentz and two free throws by Bennie Elven helped Prairie hold a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Lorentz and Elven opened the second quarter with a basket each to give Prairie a 17-12 lead. After a Shadle Park basket, Lorentz and Shane Hanson each scored to put Prairie up 7 at 21-14. Shadle Park got back within 4 points 3 times but Prairie answered each time until at 25-21, Prairie closed out the half with 6 straight points for a 31-21 halftime lead. Hanson scored a pair of baskets and Behler added a basket in that final 6-0 run. The second half was a completely different story as Shadle Park came out with a full court press and forced the Pirates into turnover after turnover as they scored 12 straight points to take their first lead of the game at 31-33. Prairie wasn’t able to get even a shot off during that run. Forsmann finally broke the scoring drought with a free throw with 2:46 left in the quarter. After 5 more Highlander points, Hanson scored Prairie’s first basket of the second half with 2:13 left. Lorentz added a basket but Prairie entered the fourth quarter with a 36-42 deficit. It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as Prairie scored on basket by Forsmann and a pair of free throws by Behler while Shadle Park scored 13 points to wind up winning by 15 points. Prairie was outscored 9-34 in the second half. Forsmann and Lorentz each scored 10 points to lead the Pirates. Hanson and Behler scored 8 each and Elven scored 4. Prairie had a 31-30 edge on the boards led by Forsmann who had 16 rebounds. Elven and Lorentz each had 3 steals and Matt Wemhoff and Riley Shears each had 3 assists. Prairie was 16 for 36 from the field, 44%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. Shadle Park was 22 for 55 from the field, 40%, and 9 for 20 at the line, 45%. Prairie had 32 turnovers in the fame, 20 in the second half, while Shadle Park had 19. against Pendleton the Pirates again took an early lead. Behler drove in
for a lay-up after taking the tip from Lee Forsmann to put Prairie up
just 7 seconds into the game.Pendleton tied it then Lorentz and Hanson each scored to put Prairie up 6-2 with 4:14 left in the first quarter. Prairie didn’t score again until the 7:23 mark of the second quarter as Pendleton got several turnovers off of their press to score the final 9 points of the opening quarter and take a 6-11 lead. Pendleton scored the first point of the second quarter on a technical foul as Prairie had 6 players on the court to start the quarter. Hanson broke the scoring drought with a free throw but Pendleton answered with a 3. Prairie then was able to cut the deficit to 4 on a lay-up and then a free throw by Forsmann and a free throw by Wemhoff that made it 11-15 with 5:42 left in the half. Pendleton scored 5 straight points before Forsmann banked in a 3-pointer with 2:40 left. Pendleton answered with a 3 to make it 14-23 at the half. Prairie continued to struggle to get the ball up the floor in the second half as they scored more points from the free throw line than from the field in the second half with 11 points at the line and just 8 from the field. Pendleton outscored them 7-12 in the third quarter as Forsmann scored a basket and 2 free throws while Elven added a basket and Lorentz a free throw. Pendleton led 21-35 going into the fourth quarter. Pendleton pushed their lead to as many as 17 at 24-41 before Prairie was able to score 6 straight points and cut the lead to 11. Forsmann scored on a full court drive to the hoop then Behler scored a free throw, Wemhoff scored 2 free throws and Forsmann scored a free throw to make it 30-41 with 2:35 left to play. Prairie added 3 more points at the line as Lorentz made a free throw and Shears made a pair of free throws. Forsmann just missed another double-double as he had 16 points and 9 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Lorentz scored 4 points while Wemhoff, Hanson and Behler scored 3 each and Shears and Elven scored 2 each. Prairie had a 42-37 edge on the boards as Behler and Hanson each added 7 rebounds. Shears had 4 steals while Wemhoff and Forsmann had 3 each. Forsmann also had 2 assists. Prairie was 9 for 32 from the field, 28%, and 14 for 29 at the line, 48%. Pendleton was 16 for 60 from the field, 27%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. Prairie’s downfall came from their 36 turnovers while Pendleton had 23. held at Clarkston, Kellogg jumped all over the Pirates led by a pair of
senior twin brothers. Riply Luna and Kelby Luna combined for 22 first
quarter points as Kellogg raced out to a 7-30 lead by the end of the period.Lorentz scored Prairie’s first 4 points. His first basket tied the game at 2-2 and his second ended a 0-12 Kellogg scoring run. Forsmann added a basket and Elven a free throw for Prairie’s other first quarter points. Kellogg slowed down the pace in the second quarter, taking off their press, and outscored the Pirates just 12-14 in the period as they took a 19-44 halftime lead. Forsmann scored 4 points for the Pirates in the quarter while Shears, Behler, Elven and Levi Gehring each scored 2. Behler opened the third quarter scoring with a basket then Kellogg scored the next 8 points before Shears broke the run with a lay-up. Kellogg then scored another 6 straight points before Elven scored. After another 4 points by Kellogg, Phil Schwartz finished off the third quarter with a putback. Kellogg led 27-62 after 3 quarters meaning the final quarter was played with a running clock. Each team scored 3 points in the fourth quarter with Kellogg’s coming on a 3 pointer then Prairie scoring the final 3 on a free throw by Lorentz and a lay-up by Shears. Forsmann and Shears led the Pirates in scoring with 6 points each. Lorentz and Elven scored 5 each. Behler scored 4 and Schwartz and Gehring scored 2 each. For Kellogg Riply Luna finished with 25 and his brother with 17. Rebounding was even with 26 each. Wemhoff, Forsmann and Shears each had 4 rebounds for the Pirates. Forsmann had 2 steals and Wemhoff had 4 assists. Prairie was 14 for 30 from the field, 47%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%. Kellogg was 23 for 47 from the field, 49%, and 9 for 18 at the line, 50%. Turnovers continued to plague the Pirates as they had 25 compared to 8 for Kellogg. The Pirates are now 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The JV team also played at the tournament but we have no results of their games available.
