The Prairie Lady Pirates placed second in the Avista Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament held at Lewiston on Dec. 27-29.
On Tuesday, Dec. 27 they easily defeated Pendleton 49-20. On Wednesday, Dec. 28, they fought off a tough Clarkston team 49-37. In the championship game on Thursday, Dec. 29, they faced a familiar foe and saw Lapwai pull away in the fourth quarter for a 44-54 win.
Vs. Pendleton
In their opener against Pendleton, Prairie scored the first 4 points on a basket each by Hailey Hanson and Lexi Schumacher. Pendleton then scored 8 straight to take their only lead of the game. Kristin Wemhoff shoots a lay-up against Pendleton as Tara Schlader gets ready for a possible rebound.
Kristin Wemhoff drove to the hoop to cut the lead to 6-8. Kylie Schumacher then tied it on a putback and Lexi Schumacher put Prairie on top for good with a 3-pointer that made it 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie then scored the first 13 points of the second quarter to make it a 20-0 scoring run. Lexi Schumacher opened the second quarter with a basket then Tara Schlader scored a free throw, a basket and 2 more free throws. Wemhoff then scored 3 straight baskets to make it 24-8.
Pendleton finally broke through with a basket at the 2:07 mark, just 5 seconds shy of going 8 full minutes without scoring.
Prairie’s full court press and halfcourt trap combined to force 13 second quarter turnovers from the Buckaroos.
Prairie took a 29-12 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter saw Prairie outscore Pendleton 10-4. Prairie could have scored a lot more but struggled to make shots as they connected on just 4 of 16 attempts from the field.
Pendleton scored first in the fourth quarter then Prairie scored 10 straight. Schlader scored a putback then scored 2 free throws. Sage Elven scored a pair of free throw and then Wemhoff and Schlader each scored a basket to make it 49-18 with 3:44 left. That also turned on the running clock.
Pendleton scored the only 2 points in the final 3 minutes to make the final scored 49-20.
Wemhoff led the Pirates with 15 points and added 11 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 assists. Schlader also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and added 6 steals and 4 assists. Lexi Schumacher scored 9 points. Kylie Schumacher scored 4. Alli Geis and Hanson each scored 3. Riley Enneking and Elven each scored 2.
Prairie was 19 for 66 from the field, 29%, and 10 for 21 at the line, 48%. Pendleton was 8 for 32 from the field, 25%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%.
Prairie committed 21 turnovers but forced 41 including 26 by way of steals.

Vs. Clarkston
In the game against Clarkston a 10-0 run in the second quarter put Prairie up by 11 and the two teams played pretty much even after that.
Alli Geis puts a shot up against Clarkston.Clarkston started the game by jumping out to leads of 0-5 and 2-7 with Schlader scoring Prairie’s first basket.
A steal by Schlader led to a basket by Wemhoff to make it 4-7. After a Clarkston basket, the Pirates closed out the first quarter with a 12-0 run. Wemhoff started it with a free throw then a blocked shot by Kylie Schumacher led to a lay-up by Wemhoff on the other end.
Kylie Schumacher then scored on a putback. Lexi Schumacher hit a 3 from the corner and Schlader scored inside. Kylie Schumacher then closed out the quarter with a basket to make it 16-9.
Clarkston came back in the second quarter as they outscored Prairie 2-8 to cut the lead to 1 at 18-17. Wemhoff scored Prairie’s basket on a drive to the hoop.
At the 5:17 mark, Lexi Schumacher picked up a loose ball on the offensive end and scored to kick off a 10-0 run by the Pirates. A steal by Lexi Schumacher led to a basket by Wemhoff. Lexi Schumacher then scored a backdoor lay-up on a feed from Geis. Wemhoff took a defensive rebound the length of the court for a lay-up. Finally Schlader scored on a hook shot that made it 28-17 with 3:43 left in the half. A 10-point explosion by the Pirates in just over 90 seconds.
Clarkston finally scored again with 2:58 left but a basket by Geis and a minute later a free throw by Geis made it 30-19 with 5 seconds left in the half. A Clarkston player then got fouled on a buzzer beating shot attempt but made just 1 of the ensuing 3 free throws to make it 31-20 at the half.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle to shoot the ball as Prairie made just 2 of 10 shots but that was hot shooting compared to Clarkston’s 1 for 15 shooting.
Tara Schlader scored all 7 of Prairie’s third quarter points on 2 baskets and 3 free throws. Clarkston meanwhile had a 3-pointer and 3 free throws as Prairie took a 38-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie made just 2 baskets in the fourth quarter but made enough free throws to keep the Bantams from getting any closer than 9 points.
Clarkston got within 9 at 44-35 with 1:49 to play. Prairie then got a free throw from Hanson and Wemhoff hit 2 of 4 at the line to push the lead back to 12.
After a Clarkston basket Kylie Schumacher closed out the scoring. She was shooting free throws and missed both but managed to rebound the second miss despite being the only Prairie player on that end of the floor. She then made a basket to make it 49-37.
Wemhoff had another double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Schlader also had a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Lexi Schumacher scored 8 while Kylie Schumacher scored 6 and Geis and Hanson scored 3 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 56-31 as Hanson and Kylie Schumacher each added 7 rebounds.
Schlader had 3 steals and Wemhoff had 3 assists.
Clarkston tried to get back in the game with full court pressure and managed to force Prairie into 35 turnovers but couldn’t take advantage due to poor shooting.
Prairie was 18 for 45 from the field, 40%, and 12 for 28 at the line, 43%. Clarkston was 14 for 63 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. The Bantams were only 5 for 31 shooting in the second half, 16%.

Vs. Lapwai
The two smallest schools in the field wound up playing for the championship and unfortunately for Prairie, Lapwai held the lead nearly the entire game. Kylie Schumacher shoots against Lapwai. Also shown is Tara Schlader.
Lapwai’s Jordyn McCormack-Marks carried the offense for the Wildcats in the first half, scoring three 3-pointers in the first quarter and adding 7 more points including another 3 in the second quarter.
Prairie fell behind 4-11 in the first quarter then Wemhoff sank 2 free throws and Schlader scored on a lay-up to cut the deficit to 3 at 8-11. McCormack-Marks then hit her third 3 of the quarter and Lapwai’s lone senior Lauren Gould added a basket before Schlader closed out the quarter scoring a lay-up on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff to make it 10-16.
Prairie scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to pull within 2 at 14-16. Wemhoff scored 3 free throws and Kylie Schumacher added another.
Lapwai then went on a 0-8 run to push the lead to 10 at 14-24.
Wemhoff and Lexi Schumacher each made a pair of free throws and Hanson scored Prairie’s only basket of the second quarter but Lapwai countered with a pair of 3-pointers to take a 20-30 lead at the half.
Wemhoff scored a pair of baskets to open the second half but Lapwai countered with a basket and 2 free throws. Prairie then closed the quarter with a 10-2 run. Lexi Schumacher and Hanson each scored a baskets. Lapwai scored then Wemhoff, Lexi Schumacher and Wemhoff again scored baskets to cut the deficit to 34-36 after 3 quarters.
Kaylie Schumacher then gave Prairie their first and unfortunately only lead of the game with a 3-pointer at the 7:10 mark of the fourth quarter. Lapwai responded with 6 straight points before Schlader was able to score inside to cut the lead to 3 at 39-42 with 5:30 left.
After a Lapwai basket, Prairie got it back down to 2 points on baskets by Hanson and Schlader that made it 42-44 with 3 minutes left. That’s when the younger of the McCormack-Marks sisters took over for Lapwai. Jaelyn McCormack-Marks scored the next 6 points before Schlader made 2 free throws with 33 seconds left.
Lapwai then scored the game’s final 4 points at the free throw line to push the final margin back to 10 points.
Wemhoff finished the game with 17 points to lead the Pirates. Schlader had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out with 20 seconds to play.
Lexi Schumacher and Hanson each scored 6 points and Kylie Schumacher scored 4.
Prairie had a 39-28 edge on the boards with Wemhoff adding 8 rebounds while Kylie Schumacher had 7 and Hanson 6.
Schlader had 3 steals and Wemhoff had 6 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 44 from the field, 34%, and 13 for 23 at the line, 57%. Lapwai was 18 for 56 from the field, 32%, and 13 for 18 at the line, 72%. Lapwai had five 3-pointers while Prairie had just 1.
Prairie had 27 turnovers while Lapwai had just 14.
The Lady Pirates are now 7-3 on the season.
The JV team also played at the tournament but we have no information on their games.
